Football Program Adds One More Signee For 2016

Portland State football has added one student-athlete to its 2016 signing class with the addition of Troy Bacon, a transfer from Boise State. Bacon has signed an athletic aid agreement with Portland State and becomes the 17th newcomer to the program for 2016. He will be available to compete in spring practice.

Is the JC guy you mentioned earlier still expected to join the team?

Yes, but not sure if he will be joining this Spring or Fall. His name is Michael McGuire. He was.a 1st team all-conference guard. I believe he os 6-2 285 and originally from Centennial HS.

From what I could find this kid didn't have any offers leading up to signing day so it seems likely he would come on as a walk-on if he joins the team. The DE from college of Redwoods had walk-on interest from Boise State and Iowa state so we may have offered him a scholarship.

Berggren has decided to walk on at Oregon, if it doesn't work out there I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up with the Viks or another Big Sky school in a couple of years.

The one thing that seems to be a constant with all of the players Barney is recruiting. They all seem to play until the whistle is blown. You never know how a kid will pan out, but seeing that is always a good sign.

It looks like our success on the field this past season is beginning to pay dividends on our success off the field.

I am beginning to believe this is one of our best recruiting classes ever.

One of the quiet improvements I see with Coach Barnum and his staff this year is the quality of preferred walk-on's they're getting. The below player is just the latest example I've heard about. His brother was of the bigger recruits a few years in the State and now plays for the University of Oregon. The athletic gene doesn't seem to have stop with him, as you will see in the highlight film below:

I managed to find the podcast of the our game with North Texas on KNTU and during the pre-show that interviewed Coach Barnum. They noted that we had a bunch of FBS drop downs on the roster. When asked about that, Coach Barnum said he was contacted by as many as 72 FBS players wanting to come to Portland State. Coach said he interviewed then and selected the ones he thought best fit in with the team, he said he not picked the best of the bunch, but he got the ones he felt fit in with the team.

I also managed to find a video download of the game. The game was broadcast by NTTV, UNT's student run TV network, with student announcers. The link no longer exists, but I managed to download it watched the video with the radio feed. It took me a while to sync the two, sounded good. As soon as I can get it uploaded onto a cloud or somerhing similar, I'll share the link.
