Chris Seisay has left the University of Oregon football team and is looking to transfer to a Football Championship Subdivision program, possibly Portland State of the Big Sky Conference, with hopes of returning to the offensive side of the ball as a wide receiver.
It was first reported on Monday by The Oregonian/OregonLive that Seisay, who was going into the 2016 season as a redshirt junior cornerback, was seeking a transfer after leaving the Oregon program over the weekend.
“I just felt like Oregon wasn’t the place for me anymore,” Seisay said Tuesday, after returning to his home in American Canyon. “I just wasn’t feeling happy there.
“I gave it my all, and that’s all I can do. I had a great experience playing in all those games. I appreciate the coaches giving me that chance to go to that school and to be able to play in those games.”
Seisay has two years of eligibility remaining.
Seisay, a former star at American Canyon High School, started at a defensive back position and made four total tackles, including three solo stops, during Oregon’s spring game in May.
He started the season opener last year against Eastern Washington, recording a career-high nine tackles (seven solo) and had a tackle for loss. He also had the first takeaway of the Oregon season, intercepting a pass in the red zone in the second quarter.
He started games against Florida State in the Rose Bowl and against Ohio State in the national championship game during the 2014 season.
He had 55 tackles, six passes defensed and an interception in 18 career games.
Seisay missed nine games last year after suffering torn ligaments in his left ankle. The injury required surgery.
He came back to play in the Alamo Bowl on Jan. 2 and had six total tackles (five solo, one assist) for Oregon in a 47-41, triple-overtime loss to TCU in San Antonio.
“I just feel like ever since my injury, I worked to get back and I didn’t have such a good Alamo Bowl game,” he said. “That’s something that I feel like they shouldn’t be mad about because my leg was as skinny as a stick. I worked to get it back to normal and I tried to get my stamina up and all that. You can’t miss nine weeks of football and expect to come back and dominate.
“Me and the coaches just haven’t been on good terms since last year. I’ve been working hard to gain their trust back and to prove that I’m not that player that people saw in the Alamo Bowl.”
Seisay had an outstanding career at American Canyon. He was a MaxPreps.com Division II second-team all-state defender and received three stars by Rivals.com, Vallejo Times Herald Defensive Player of the Year, and the Wolves’ most valuable player award.
“Me and my parents have a good idea of what’s going to be going on now,” he said. “I’ve been in good shape. I’m just glad I have a chance to still play.”
In January of 2015, Seisay started at cornerback and made six total tackles for Oregon as the Ducks beat Florida State, 59-20, in the Rose Bowl game on New Year’s Day in Pasadena.
Making just his third career start, Seisay was credited with seven total tackles for Oregon in the
inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship Game. Seisay, a redshirt freshman at the time, had five solo stops, two assisted tackles, and a pass breakup. He had one tackle for 1-yard loss as Oregon fell to Ohio State, 42-20, before a crowd of 85,689 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in January of 2015.
He would like to transfer and get back on the football field as soon as possible. He wants to try and play this season, but he has not enrolled anywhere just yet.
He said Portland State is his No. 1 choice.
“I’m going to try and play both ways and just utilize all of my ability on the football field,” said Seisay. “That’s what is more important to me right now. I feel like I’ll be utilizing all of my football ability if I’m on the offensive side of the ball.”
As a senior for American Canyon, he caught 28 passes for 608 yards and 11 touchdowns.
He had 26 catches for 756 yards and nine touchdowns his junior year.
