2016 Roster

I think it is interesting that so many people think they know what happened with Karsen's release and the specifics. I can tell you that I do know the details and the NCAA has ordered Karsen to not talk about it. So- when he says the reason he left Weber was to go to a bigger school, that was not what happened. Karsen was a great representative for Weber and continues to hold his end of the deal to keep the peace, even if it makes him look bad. That shows his character.

Heard that there were problems with a position coach. Don't worry fitutah, most people don't like that coach either and don't understand why Jay keeps him around. I'll agree that Karsen is a very nice and good man, really sad to see him go.

Don't really care what happened. He is not a Wildcat any longer. Your son can hold his head up and move along.
 
There's lots of hearsay in sports, some true, some partly true, some opinionated & partly not true, some not true at all...transparency is very controlled in sports. Like 'baller' said, "he is not a Wildcat any longer"...unfortunate in this fan's view who does care, but also aware of the reality that players & coaches acts in play are their own doing, for good or bad. Doubtful that it will ever be fully transparent! :thumb: :thumbdown: :shocking:

Bottom line, he is not a Wildcat anymore, move on! (Not saying it isn't interesting to talk about, but assumptions are usually only worth one's :twocents:).
 
N.ogden are you saying that KL had an issue with Hunsaker? He is the LB's position coach.

Fitutah, I don't quite understand. Why would the NCAA tell a student-athlete not to talk? Wouldn't it be the other way around? Uh, the NCAA wants student-athletes to talk; especially if a violation has been committed. The only reason they wouldn't want to hear from a student athlete is if their is an issue with the student athlete.

What I can say is that Karsen asked for a release and it was denied by Coach Hill. He then had to appeal the decision. He went through a lengthy appeal process and they overturned Coach Hill's decision and he was later granted that release. If his reason would have been to go play for a bigger school, that denial would not have been over turned. His case was significant enough that he won the appeal. The NCAA hearing is confidential and he is not allowed to talk about it nor are the coaches. So- don't always believe what you hear. Karsen appreciated the opportunity he was given at Weber. Wish him well....and as they say in football- "next man up."

That makes sense, but I don't understand why he would want a release unless he was hoping to transfer somewhere "bigger" than Weber. He wasn't looking for a release to go to another FCS. You want a release for one of two reasons. First, and the most likely for most players seeking a release, to transfer somewhere else. Or, and this could be the reason, issues developed between other players or coaches. A relationship was so bad with a coach, or other players, that he had to leave.

Routinely and very recently, Jay has been claiming that FBS schools are going after his kids, and refuses to be a feeder for FBS schools. There must be a reason why he is so fired up about that specific issue right now. He's been going off on that recently, since Spring Ball. No matter, thanks for the explanation Fitutah. Thank you for providing some information on the situation.
 
I for one don't take care that Karsen left!! We have good depth at LB and he'll be replaced easily. I also couldn't care less that he can lift a house because he ran like he had cement boots on, and seemed lost at times on the field. Being strong won't help him read a defense which I think Stevie Wonder could do just as well as Karsen.
 
There are at least two players who will not continue their career in football with Weber State whose loss could hurt the team; especially hurt in terms of depth; Karsen Liljenquist (MLB) & Jake Gallegos (DT). Defensive End is a position without much returning and has a severe lack of depth it seems. Only 3 DE's are listed, none of which were starters last year. But Adam Lewis & John Leilu played a lot. Maybe they are counting on some of the guys currently listed as DL to move to DE and add help & depth there. Linebacker depth is good but will suffer a bit from the loss of Liljenquist. Hopefully they have incoming players who will take up the slack created by these defections. By my count there are at least 18 underclassmen players who were on the team (includes partial scholarships, full scholarships and walk-ons) last year who are not returning this year. It seems to me that the coaching staff's modus operandi is to bring in as many as possible and throw them all against the wall to see who sticks in a continuing effort to upgrade personnel.

I think that you just described every athlete, every coach, and the reality in every sport, everywhere in college athletics. The exact same thing happens in all walks of life. I know that has been my experience. IMO, a better way to look at it is more people are getting opportunities.
 
I'm not to worried about losing either Liljenquist or Gallegos. I don't know know why Gallegos isn't on the roster, but, as of right now, he isn't and that is all that really matters. By the end of last year, he had pretty much been replaced as the starter, but that was mostly due to injury. We all know why Liljenquist isn't back. Too bad. I like Tals idea for him though. I think he would have been a really good end. He was a decent MLB, but I think, especially at the FCS level, he would have excelled as an end.

We do need to worry about the end position. Iosua Opeata, who started at DE a handful of times last season, was moved to the offensive line and with that move, it only leaves us with a couple of guys who have experience at that position. Both Lewis and Leilua are good options and will end up being really good, but we need more depth. Maybe there are a couple of guys joining the team who are not currently on the roster who are going to give us good depth and talent at that position. Too bad that Vince Coleman only got 1 year at Weber. He was really starting to turn into something special.

To me, the only areas of major concern are DE and QB. If we had a better QB, the Cats would be a serious contender for the conference crown and possibly a long run in the playoffs. Maybe I'll be proven wrong and one of the four will end up really impressing and being that driving force the Cats so desperately need.
 
As of right now, Karsen hasn't played a min for Snow. There are number of reasons why he hasn't, of course, the biggest is due to injury, but who knows. Maybe it is because he isn't in the rotation. As for Leluia he is averaging 2.5 tackles per game.
