2017-18, Way Too Early Predictions

Drick Bernstine at UND is also a grad transfer now, as was Shanks. Need another C/F transfer now like Jones from Iowa
Looks like UND's fortunes are centered on finding some rebounding and interior defense. Guard play will still be solid. However, as UM and WSU proved last year, you can't thrive on guard play alone.

Guess he's headed to the PAC-12. Big losses by the Sioux!

Washington State.

Looks to me like it will be hard for UND to repeat last years success. I'm not saying they can't do it, just that it will be hard. They are champs until someone knocks them off.

There are still players being added to rosters across the league. I still believe there will be surprises. Who knows, maybe even at WSU.

With what the Sioux have lost, I just can't see them repeating. The Sky has gotten a lot better this off season. There are a few teams who could make a run and win the Sky this season. Lots of parity...

UND will have hands full getting in top half of big sky....one kid back who averaged over 10ppg and nobody that averaged 5 boards a game...last 2 freshman classes signed had zero kids with competing D1 offers...should be able to muster up solid guard play...but in big trouble at the 4, very small and thin at the 5 and front court depth is poor...Jones needs the unproductive injury prone transfer from Iowa to blow up next season and to find a ready to go big to replace bersnstine....who stabbed the team in the back by waiting til June to leave....Jones is under a 2 month contact set to expire 6/30 ...lousy for recruiting....Idaho best bet, Montana St. next, Weber needs Chapman to put up 1st team BSC level numbers...which he likely will do

I wouldn't discount UM's chances either. Next to our recruiting class, I would say UM has the second best class in the league. They have two, quality transfers who sat out last year, and filled in some holes with some solid signings this year. They also have two of the top 5 or 6 guards in the BSC returning. Other teams who have recruited well are UI, ISU, UNC, EWU, and SUU. I'm not as sure about the recruiting done by PSU, NAU, SacSt, MSU, and UND. I don't see any standouts there. That doesn't mean they didn't find some diamonds, just that I am unsure. :ugeek:

Now that 99% of the dust has settled on BSC basketball recruiting and transfers, here is how I now see the teams lining up in Reno.

WSU
UI
UM
EWU
UND
MSU
ISU
UNC
PSU
SUU
NAU
Sac

My ranking is based on how they finished last year, who they lost, and who the brought in. Most teams have a full roster, so there shouldn't be a lot of surprises now. Although, we could add one more, if the right player were to come along. :coffee:

No way Sac. St is 12th. They have a very good PG and PF returning. They might not be that deep, but they have some very good players. I would put them probably 5th or 6th.
My very early picks.

1. Idaho
2. Weber State
3. Montana
4. Montana State
5. North Dakota
6. Sac St.
7. EWU
8. SUU
9. Northern Colorado
10. Portland State
11. Idaho State
12. Northern Arizona.

Care to wager on that 12th place team??
Not really. Everyone knows my predictions aren't worth a crap. The top six and the bottom six could be shuffled. Those JC kids you brought in could turn out to be gems, who knows. NAU's transfers could turn out to be better than advertised. SUU's new guys might surprise. UM's transfers from last year are now eligible and could be great. UI has a ton of guys back and had a solid recruiting class. MSU needed to get some interior defense and rebounding, the book is still out. ISU needed the same thing and appears to have found it. UND lost an MVP guard and most of their interior defense and rebounding, doesn't look like they replaced what they lost. UNC had some good returning pieces and brought in some good potential. :coffee:

Southern Utah star guard Randy Onwuasor will be leaving Cedar City, head coach Todd Simon confirmed Wednesday.

Onwuasor is in the process of finishing up his degree at SUU this summer and then plans to transfer to another program. Once he graduates, he will be immediately eligible to play for his new school as a graduate transfer.

Just saw this being reported earlier, you think he may be headed to Utah? Huge blow to SUU.

Curious as to your thoughts on ISU and NoCo, I was thinking they might struggle this year.

Still waiting for UNC to get down to ten players.....They could be pretty good this year.....Randy from TX. I think...not interested in being the big fish in a small pond I guess...Any school looking to fill a 2 guard will take him

ISU got better when they lost Telfair to graduation. He was a cancer in that program. They really needed to find interior defense and rebounding and they did that in recruiting. They also got a good point guard from Northern Idaho JC. They made themselves better with this recruiting class. Top six better, I don't think so, but better.

UNC Had some good guards in the program but needed the same thing ISU did. They went to Europe and found a potentially great combo big man. He looked quite talented to me. they also found a few other pieces that will help them to get better. Their new coaches will get them going, I'm surer of that.

There are always the unknowns, like SUU's star leaving the team, or late additions. However, that is my SWAG at this point. My feelings are that 75% of the teams in the BSC made themselves better with this year's recruiting class. How much better? We won't know until next March.

I agree with Olds. I feel that overall the Big Sky recruited a lot better this season and that should translate into a stronger conference. However like Olds stated, we will know more next March whether or not the Sky is improved. But, as of right now, the talent level is higher than it has been in a few years. There is a reason for this. I think the schools recruited better due to three things: A. Facilities are improving in the Sky; B. Coaches are better and finally; C. There are Big Sky players making it to the league, and they aren't just from Weber State.

To bad SUU lost Randy Onwuasor. With him the T-Birds suddenly are very dangerous. He is a legitimate talent who can score 30 at anytime. I get it though. He feels he is better than Cedar and the Sky. Well, we will see. He wouldn't be leaving if he didn't already have options. Maybe he is headed to Long Beach State. LOL I wish him well. If he wants to make it to the next level, he needs to become a much better shooter, consistent outside threat, and much better defender. He has the tools.

VC shows them at 12 and it was my understanding that they needed to get to 11. Sounds like at least one of their guys will give up his grant and be a walk on or will transfer. I'm sure that has already happened and the news has not yet hit the media. It is also possible that they only had to get to 12 this year and 11 next year. We really don't know exactly what the agreement with the NCAA was. Sometimes there is little published on this sort of thing. :coffee:

UNC will impose the following penalties:
A postseason ban, including the conference tournament, for the 2016-17 men's basketball season.
A financial penalty of $5,000 plus 2 percent of the men's basketball program budget.
A reduction of a total of three financial aid awards provided to men's basketball student-athletes during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.
looks like 10 this season

That could mean three over two years, or one this year and two next year. It could also mean two this year and one next year. I don't think it means 6 grants, three this year and three next. I could be wrong, but I think that is how it goes. They may have chosen to take one out this year and two out next year.

1. Idaho top 7 players back plus return of callendret propels the senior laden vandals to the top spot after 3rd place tie last season...
