2017 Recruiting Class - "Savage17"

To All,
Enjoyed the Killing EWU did this morning with NLI. WE got 19 Players, don't know if Scholarships or not. going to miss Reilly Hennessey, he will definitely start at Central. Saw 3 of our former Players at the NLI, Aaron Neary with Phil, Jake Rodgers, Carolina, and Clay DeBorg, Dallas. Can't wait for April for startng practices. Also met our QB Coach from Oklahoma State. Well got to run. Check you later. Vic E. Wallace

Hey Vic! Wish I could have joined you all at the breakfast this am. Watched on TV and was proud to see Jake do a fine job with the SWX guys... especially since he hates being in the spotlight! He is finishing his degree at EWU this quarter before he heads to NC 1st of April. This new group looks great! Glad to see a beefy DT...

That's a Great Class! Thought to see Hennessy transfer to down Central, he has lots of talent. I'm surprised there aren't at least 2 RB commits. Anyone know why?

Relatively deep already, could be waiting on that possible transfer from Boise State, and/or like Taiwan, Gurley might make a switch or play both sides. He's electric as a runner.

EDIT: From the GoEags write-up:
Best on No Running Backs on List: "The one position we didn't feel like we needed to address in the now was the running back position. We feel we have young players there who are going to be very effective moving forward, and we're excited at that position. We determined that if we found a running back that really fits us we try to sign him, but if not we'll look at the class of 2018."

Cory Young ended up signing with NAU, which is a bummer. I would have liked to see him in Red, but I also love the backs that we already have on the roster.

Excellent class. On paper, best in school history?

Five 3-Star commitments makes is the best recruiting class on paper. The coaches did a fantastic job keeping this class together after the coaching change.

Absolutely. The Jim Allen article in today's Spokesman mentioned how many schools tried to flip some of our recruits after it was announced that Baldwin was leaving. It's amazing to me that they were able to hang on to every single verbal.

Nothing wrong with trying to flip recruits since nothing is binding until NLI day. I imagine we'd probably do the same. I think the main reason that nobody budged is the way that our coaches build relationships with these guys. Traveling all over the western United States visiting them probably didn't hurt, either.

I would say that we certainly did well in Washington state... I have seen people post on this form claiming that EWU is Washington's team based on how many in-state players we have. Looks to be true considering only 4 of these recruits are from out of state. I love that about EWU.

UW and WSU may have done very well with the top prospectives (WSU surprised me tbh), but it is neat how many players on this list were from Washington.

What's so important about having all Wa guys/majority Wa kids? Wulff said that a few times & it was sorta offensive. Wouldn't you want the best players, no matter the state?

Off the cuff, I can think of a few benefits:

1. You save money by not having to pay out of state tuition.
2. You build a fanbase of parents within Washington State. We need a bigger fanbase of people seeking seating at games to push for our expansion project.
3. Washington State has an immense population for the relatively few football programs. 9 times out of ten, the top athletes that didn't go to an FBS school are still going to be top athletes nationally.

Everything that Rjones said.... :thumb:

Additionally, would you rather have a local alumni base or one all over the country. Local alumni are much more likely to attend events, stay in touch with the program/university and inevitably be more invested due to pride. Not to say out of state kids won't do these things and the program shouldn't go out of state for the best players, but it's just something to hang your hat on that tends to reap more benefits in the long run.

Gotcha!

tski60,
Glad to see you are still keeping up with us on the Blog. I kept looking at Jake standing on the side, and I looked back for my daughter she was up front hugging Jake, I had difficulty recognizing him until Chris came back and said there is Jake Rodgers. He looks good, he doesn't look like the OL we had, stomach is down, etc:). Our Coaches did an Outstanding Job keeping the committed Players on the list. I am very glad I did attend. Met the QB Coach, he is from Oklahoma State, he came over and introduced himself to us and others. Take care! Go Eagles!!!!! Vic E. Wallace

BF,
We have 4 Running Backs on the Roster from last year, maybe we will get some Walk-Ons. #20 Sam McPherson, #28 Antoine Custer, #30 Tamarick Pierce, and #44 Dennis Merritt. I remember a Luciano also was here last year as a RB. He did make the team last year, hope he returns. I can say I have seen 4 of the 5 R/Backs at the games, and doing their 7 on 7 two days a week. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic E. Wallace

Best on no RBs:

Also, we lost 12 to graduation and 1 to transfer. Yet we signed 19 recruits. Who else did we lose?

I've been thinking about that as well. It may be as simple as we're replacing some full scholarships with guys who will be on partials. I think some guys come in on a partial or as a PFO, but they end up being upgraded by the time they are upperclassmen. Hope that makes sense...I may not have explained my theory in the best way.

It could also be that we're losing some other guys and just not tracking, or some combination of the above.

To All,
At the FB Banquet on Saturday, Feb 18th, 17, spoke to Ashanti Kindle #21, he stated he will be going back to his old position, Running Back, he was switched to LB last season. He is very happy moving to his old position. Vic E. Wallace
