2017 Recruiting Class

The 2017 recruiting class is a ways off yet, but it is where our coaches are spending a lot of their recruiting efforts right now.

What do we know about that class at this point in time? We know that we will be replacing at least three positions, Senglin, Gittens, and Hill. We also know that we will be getting Riley Court back from his mission in the summer of 2017. On paper, that leaves two grants available. Riley being a guard, one would think that we would be looking for one guard and one big man. The list I have seen, may or may not be accurate, includes 5 guards and 7 big men. There will be others added to the list over the next year and there will always be some that are not known to anyone outside the program. It is always quite fluid.

I like everyone listed on the Verbal Commits page. I don't want to single any of them out at this point because so much can change between now and next summer. A couple of the kids are potential missionaries and that could add to the number we sign. My guess is that we will try to sign 3 or 4 players. One or two guards and one or two big men. We don't have any true centers on our list, but I expect that some will be added. :coffee:

I like how the coaches have had some time to evaluate a number of players from this class already and will have a solid year to see how their top recruits develop. I'm also sure there are a number of players that aren't listed on the Verbal Commits site and some that are, that Randy and Co. have already passed on. I'm sure we will see a number added to the lists as well. It should be an exciting year!

Some of the guys on our list are starting to get interest from some very good programs around the country. I don't see that as a bad thing. I see it as our coaches targeting the right sort of player. You don't have to get every single one of these guys. However, when you do get them, they help to grow your program. :coffee:

Another very good player added to our list. This kid sounds like a good fit for us. Does anyone know if he is a mission kid?

I really like how our 2017 list is shaping up. This is another good addition. From what I can tell, yes, he is an automatic mission kid. That would make, I believe 3, maybe 4, guys on the 2017 list that are automatic mission kids.

I hate to say it but it feels like we are becoming BYU-Ogden with all of these automatic mission kids.

If the kids can play...why not recruit them? Only issue is that since Randy has been coach how man RM's have actually panned out for the Cats? Nice thing is that BYU has over-recruited, and don't have spots for these Utah kids. Also, there are more DI kids graduating in Utah. Our AAU programs were behind 15 years ago, but have actually caught up with the nation. We do a better job coaching our AAU kids, and developing their talent. So...there are more options close by.

Most came in Randy's first year...Brody Van Brocklin, Tyler Billings, Dan Henry, and GB Burnigham.

Since then, only Darin Mahoney and Nick Hansen have really panned out. Am I missing anyone?

Recruiting is a risky business anyway, but when you add the unknown of what two years away from the game will do to/for a player, it becomes even riskier. For some it is a time when their bodies can grow and mature. For others it is a time when their motivation can change, and not always for the better, as it relates to sports. We have all seen it go both ways. It's a gamble, but a gamble worth taking. I think that the positives outweigh the negatives. No matter what religion you are, you have to respect someone willing to take on the responsibility and sacrifice required to go on a two year mission. On returning, it is a huge adjustment for them, in many ways.

We are not YBU North. However, we are a place that respects all religions and belief systems. We, in the Ogden community, have a special appreciation for diversity and a welcoming attitude toward everyone. It's one of the things that I have always loved about Ogden. Provo/YBU....., not so much.

Well stated Oldrunner. Weber State and Ogden have always been places where people of all backgrounds have been welcomed and accepted.

I've got nothing new here. I just wanted to recirculate this to the top.

2016 - Taken care of.

2017 - We sign two to four guys.

2018 - Taken care of.

2019 - We have three years to work on it.
