2017 RECRUITING THREAD

Dirk Koetter's influence would be absolutely an outstanding addition to this program. It conceivably could bring parts of the Oregon system we developed during the 1980s. Now Washington and Boise State have it and Oregon has abandoned it. PSU could be the third school to have it.

I wonder if Tampa Bay is applying it.

If you want to see what the Oregon system is like, view a recording of the Oregon game against Washington featuring Kenny Wheaton's pick. Or the Bill Musgrave led game against BYU at Autzen. That is the spirit of the Oregon system and, unfortunately, Oregon perverted it through its inherent unsavoriness and let it go to others. Let's make ourselves at PSU one of those recipients.

This is a great class of athletes. I am very excited for Portland State. This looks to be a great team over the next few years from the 2016 and 2017 recruiting classes. Good job on recruiting PSU.

See if I can make this link work. Barnum today on John Canzano talking about the signing class. Pretty good listen.

Davis Koetter is a huge signing. Obviously he's flown well under the radar. I think we may have found a gem here. The size of this recruiting class is great and looks like there's some serious talent. We've had two straights awesome recruiting years on the tail-end of the playoff run. Things are finally looking up.

I was wondering about Koetter. Sounds like he's had to move around quite a bit.

Interesting read:

Do we read into Barnum's comments that he thought some of the guys last year were soft and maybe had some attitude? He obviously wasn't happy with the receivers. I'm hoping that they can solidify the Defensive backs and linebackers.

'Barney' on new Vikings

Portland State football coach goes through his lineup of signees

Portland State foo• ball coach Bruce "Barney" Barnum's thoughts on various members of the Vikings' 2017 letter-of-intent class:
• Anthony Adams, defensive back (Newberg High) — "I think he's one of the best players in Oregon."
• Nicolas Ah Sam, linebacker/defensive line (Springfield High) — "He's a leader, and he's one of the toughest kids you'll ever meet in your life."
• Jerin Appling, defensive back (Grants Pass High) —  "What an athlete. He's long, he strikes you. He did a double back flip. He's got a strong family background."
• Noah Brosio, kicker/punter (North Valley High) —  "There is a chance he might be kicking and punting for the Vikings next year."
• Zarykk "Boogie" Davis, defensive line (Westview High) — "How big is he going to get? Where is he going to fit? Could it be at linebacker? So he might be a guy you redshirt."
• Robert Holt, defensive back (Sacramento, California) — "Just a tough player, covers ground and will strike you. I know he's one hell of a football player."
• George McCorley, wide receiver (San Diego) — "Athletically, he can do it. Is he going to be mature enough to be able to contribute right away?"
• Bishop Mitchell, running back (Kennedy High) — "I think he's the sleeper of the class. He's Portland State's Barry Sanders. He committed early. I tell you what, the kid's going to be special."
• Jake Porter, defensive line (West Linn High) — "He's big enough right now to do  it. He has the fast twitch (muscles) to do it right now. How he's going to adjust to the speed of college, that's the only question."
• Jared Reed, defensive back (Central Catholic High) — "He's a leader. He's a hell of a football player. But there's so much to that guy as far as what he brings to the program. What a dream kid."
• Markus Sullivan, linebacker/defensive line (Mill Creek, Washington) — "He's got the bloodline. He's Pat Sullivan's nephew. Whether he plays next year? ... our D-line is not bad right now."
• Ryan Swanson, defensive back (Eagle, Idaho) —  "He's the defensive player of the year in the state of Idaho at 5A. We got the defensive player of the year last year (in linebacker Kenton Bartlett) ... I haven't seen a kid strike like that on film in many moons."
• Mataio Talalemotu. wide receiver (Beaverton High) — "He lit up the state of Oregon. We need to see how he adjusts to the speed. ... Big body. Great hands. Great speed. I want to see him on the field right away for us."
• Malik Thirdgill, tight end (Central Catholic High) — "He's got things you can't coach. He's got the size and the speed. We need to see how he adjusts and see whether his body is going to be durable enough" to play as a freshman.
• Antwone Williams, running back (Los Angeles) — "His nickname is Turbo, and you can see why (on video)."

Brosio better work hitting from 40 if Barny plans on in fact starting him next year. This set of kicks, yikes! (I can't believe Prokicker.com uploaded them) https://youtu.be/sa7nEScnkck

Kickoffs need work too, these aren't even hitting the goal line from the 40. https://youtu.be/Wjo4LuwIrbY

Two More Sign National Letters Of Intent With Viking Football

http://www.goviks.com/news/2017/3/28/two-more-sign-national-letters-of-intent-with-viking-football.aspx

Portland State football signed two more student-athletes to national letters of intent for the 2017-18 academic year. Beau Kelly, from Scottsdale's Chaparral High School, and Amon Milliner, from Pasadena's La Salle High School, have both signed with the Vikings.

The two signings increase PSU's 2017 class to a total of 23, 21 of whom are high school signees.

Milliner, a 5-9, 195-pound running back, lettered in football and track at La Salle High School. He rushed 301 times for 2,406 yards and 25 touchdowns as a senior. Milliner was named the Pasadena Star-News Area Player of the Year and he was selected All-CIF Division 9 1st team Offense. For his career, Milliner had 4,933 all-purpose yards and 43 touchdowns.

"Amon is our final addition at running back," said Viking Head Coach Bruce Barnum. "He has all the tools to continue our tradition of fine running backs."

The Vikings have added three freshmen at the running back position for 2017.

Kelly, a 5-9, 165-pound wide receiver, lettered in football and baseball at Chaparral High School. As a senior, he caught 38 passes for 749 yards and eight touchdowns. Including his work as a kick returner, Kelly totaled 1,374 all-purpose yards and 11 TDs.

Kelly is the third freshman wide receiver added to the roster.

"Our receiver line was too short and we needed the right fit to our program. Beau has a toughness and attitude that put him above the other receivers we were looking at," said Barnum.

Portland State begins spring football on April 5. A complete practice schedule is listed below.

The Viking spring prospectus will be released on Monday.

Viking Football Adds Smith, Howell And Kofe To 2017 Roster

http://www.goviks.com/news/2017/6/27/viking-football-adds-smith-howell-and-kofe-to-2017-roster.aspx

The Portland State football program has added a pair of transfers, and a third key member to its roster for the 2017 season. Cade Smith, a quarterback previously from Utah State, and Maxwell Howell, a cornerback who played at Ohio University, have each signed grant-in-aid contracts with PSU and have entered school for summer term. Both are eligible to play immediately.

The third player is Semise Kofe (suh-MEES ko-FAY), who originally signed with Portland State in 2014 and has recently returned from a Mormon Mission. He will be playing his first season of college football.

Smith, a 6-foot, 205-pound sophomore, is a former All-State quarterback from West Salem High School. He brings the run-pass skill combination that fits the Viking offense. Smith accounted for 3,645 yards of total offense and 50 touchdowns as a senior at West Salem in 2014. He then signed with Utah State, redshirting in 2015 and then not seeing game action in 2016.

"It is great to have Cade home and a part of our program. He will compete for the position of quarterback," said Head Coach Bruce Barnum. "We've had eyes on him since high school because he has run our kind of system. He should be a good fit for what we do."

Howell, also a sophomore at 6-1, 190 pounds, is originally from West Palm Beach, FL. He attended Palm Beach Lakes High School and was rated as the top cornerback in his county. Howell was a redshirt at Ohio in 2015, then saw action in five games in 2016. He adds immediate depth at defensive back and will compete to start for the Vikings.

"We are lucky to have Maxwell. He comes from a great family and presents himself well. He's not just an outstanding athlete, but also a first class individual. That is exactly what I want in the locker room," Barnum said.

Kofe, a 6-1, 280-pound defensive tackle, attended Roosevelt High School in Portland and was a member of the 2013 PIL Champion team. He was named Oregon 5A 1st team All-State. Kofe was the co-Defensive Player of the Year in the PIL with high school teammate and cousin Sione Taumoe'anga, who is also a member of the Viking football team. Kofe is expected to compete for playing time as a freshman on Portland State's defensive line.

"Semise has a presence and his maturity is obvious when he walks in the room," said Barnum. "He was an impact player out of high school. We have great expectations for him and his career at Portland State."
