2018 Football schedule

Mr. Paulson dreams of real grass for the playing surface at Providence Park. If he can get rid of PSU football his dream could come true. I am afraid our future is suburbia. All a part of the continuing decline of Viking football. At least we have a nice new venue for basketball and volleyball.

Agree with most of what you wrote, except the part about the decline of Viking football. Not willing to give up that easy, but the athletic department is in a tough spot. Hope the Vikings have some friends in City Hall or the AD has a fall back long term plan. Go Viks!

For as petty as John Canzano is, this program has a lot of work to do to recover from his blasting the "800 people attended a PSU game" piece some years ago. Hence why faithinviks is spot on.

Well, Canzano's "sources" got blasted just a little bit ago when he reported that Lillard went straight to arranging a meeting with Paul Allen. Sounds like a plain rice cake had more substance than that. Bald Faced Truth got caught in a bald-faced lie.

Sorry. While winning may be a part of trying to get the community back behind the department, it is by far not the only aspect. If it was "just win, baby", we would have had a serious uptick after the playoff appearance and then this issue now would have been a bigger issue than it is.

I still think the idea of not knowing if we are going to play where people grew up watching us play, is still the main hurdle to overcome. Traditionally, we play at whatever they want to call the ballpark. It is where their dads took them and it is where their granddads took their dads. People still think we play there. On my little handbill I got at the spring game, it even says on it "Home games in black (at Providence Park)". Now we have to find those people who may have been considering coming out to a home game and tell them that we are now playing out in Hillsboro. Try getting someone interested in your product, but at the same time not knowing yourself where they need to go to get it. It reminds me a lot of my friends who are in to the kickball scene and wanted me to "check it out". I said I would and asked where do they play and their response was, "We'll text you when we know". Needless to say, I never went.

Or with the season ticket holders, who are supposed to be the backbone of your support. People from the eastside at the spring game put down $500, thinking the games are all going to be at Providence Park, and now find out they have to make the trek to Hillsboro. Do you think they are happy? Do you think they'll be all excited to buy season tickets next year? You're creating a hurdle where none should exist, and because of this, you have alienated your fanbase to the tune that they will never come back. It has very little to do with winning, and more so a lot with how you treat them.

All we are asking for is four weekends in the fall to play football. There really shouldn't be any difficulty in deciding when to play and then stick to it. The Timbers should be accommodating, and we should be grateful. We are Portland State. We should be playing in Portland.

So, does anyone on this board know if PSU football is even mentioned in the agreement between the the City and Peregrine Sports regarding the operation of Providence Park? Also, does anyone on this board have knowledge of the language in the agreement between Peregrine Sports and Portland State regarding the use of Providence Park for PSU home football games?

The link for Providence naming rights.

Kicking myself for not properly saving an addendum to the agreement between the city and Peregrine in regards to stadium expansion. I believe I saw it on Twitter... it's out there somewhere.

What was emphasized was that the Timbers- and Thorns- have to have written approval from the city to move any of those games out of PP. And there will be deliberations and probably votes with the city if that ever did happen. I am fairly certain Portland State is not held in the same regard. So when there's a reasonable chance of conflict, the Timbers and Thorns are contractually required to play home games in the stadium.

Something else worth mentioning here... what VikNut posted shows that someone in the Timbers front office has to have rather constant contact with Providence regarding stadium displays. The agreement I saw furthermore shows the Timbers also have to keep the Multnomah Athletic Club square in their hearts, because there's a lot of provisions that have to be made given the one service road onto the field is on MAC property, plus the MAC demands to maintain their view over the stadium. I'm fairly certain the Timbers spend more time with those people than they do Portland State.

Just a half-assed look at that, isn't that through 2014?

I think the Canzano train lost its oomph when his challenge to the Blazers dumping on him was telling Portland that they should follow the Dodgers. Yes, the Los Angeles Dodgers. That was years ago, naturally. That kind of indicates that there's one sport he cares about at all... which can be seen in all the hype around this latest MLB effort that'll run up against reality in 3... 2...

I don't think we will win the Oregon game, but I don't think it will be as bad as people are saying. We beat a really good Pac-12 school, Washington State, three years ago, and would have beaten the Beavers last year if we would have had any type of kicking game. We play Nevada the week before, who lost to Idaho State last year, so there is a chance to come in to Autzen with some confidence. I don't see us winning the game, but I am interested to see how we stack up against them.

I just text my son the link and to fire up the team. I know there better than everyone thinks they are. I think Portland just needs some fire under there A******

I believe we will learn much more about 2018 from our third game of the season than from the first two.

Agree. We need to make sure we are set to go after the third game as we start conference play against the two Montana schools and Idaho. We have to have things figured out by then (and be injury-free. That is the most important thing.). College of Idaho is in transition from NAIA to DII, so that is not a gimme game for us either, coming off an 0-fer season. 0-3 could become 0-6 in a hurry and Barnum's seat could be on fire by then.

Nevada (loss) SBNATION picks Nevada as a 34 point favorite over the Vikings and gives it a 98% chance of a win.

Oregon (loss) According to Athlon; "Oregon's played a FCS opponent in each of the previous eight seasons, and scored at least 53 points in all of those contests. That includes a 69-0 drubbing of Portland State in 2010."

C of Idaho (win) Do keep in mind they recieved 6 votes in the final NAIA top 25 poll.

Montana State (loss) In Athlon FCS 2018 top 25 they were listed among the others to watch.

Idaho (loss) In Athlon FCS 2018 top 25 they were listed among the others to watch.

Montana (loss) In Athlon FCS 2018 top 25 they were ranked 18th.

N Colorado (?) We have a shot here.

Sacramento State (loss) In Athlon FCS 2018 top 25 they were ranked 23rd.

Idaho State (?) Last season we lost 59-30

N Dakota (?) Last season we lost 48-21

E Washington (loss) In Athlon FCS 2018 top 25 they were ranked 5th.

If I were a betting man I'd say we go 2 and 9 in 2018, maybe 3 and 8.

Nevada was a 35 point favorite over Idaho State last year and lost. :)

Well of course, that's why we play the game.

I actually like our conference schedule this year. No Weber and no NAU. Starting out the gate with a chance to catch the Bobcats off guard, and the situation at Montana where Hauck is running off Stitt's guys like they were yesterday's news. We get through the first three, the next four could go either way, as Alan showed with "?" next to three of them. The Sac game is typically a rivalry game (even if they don't call it that), and the Dam Cup is a rivalry so those are hard to predict. We stay injury free, settle on some key positions quickly, and find a reliable kicker, we could finish at least .500 in conference, maybe better.

Nevada (L)
Oregon (L)
C of I (W)
Montana State (W)
Idaho (L)
Montana (L)
No Colo (W)
Sac (W)
Bungles (W)
No Daks (L)
Dam Cup (L)

4-4 conference, 5-6 overall

I'm working on confirming this but I thought this would happen. According to EWU's football website, the Dam Cup this year at Hillsboro will NOT be televised on ROOT because, well, it is at Hillsboro.

https://www.goeags.com/news/2018/6/1/football-ewu-game-at-portland-state-moves-to-friday-nov-16.aspx

So far I have not been able to confirm this change anywhere else, so I don't know for sure and the article did not provide a link. There is nothing on ROOT to say for sure (it is still shown as TBD).
