Team Preview from Hero Sports

https://m.herosports.com/fcs/football-2019-preview-weber-state-big-sky-bzbz

The Cats definitely had a pedestrian offense last year. Frankly, it did just enough to get the job done and win games. Yet, really, during the Coach Hill era, has the offense ever been spectacular? Coach Hill loves to dominate the time of possession and shorten offensive opportunities for opposing teams. Scoring quickly isn't a huge prerogative for these Wildcats. Holding onto the ball, maintaining drives, and shortening the game, while scoring, is the offenses best defense. What could make this team scary is the fact that Weber does has so many players on the offensive side from last year back. Also, those guys were really young last year. But, to me, having a number of core linemen back is by far more important than anything else. The Cats have: Two-year starter at center Ben Bos, Pre-season All-American guard Ty Whitworth, Two year starter at tackle Tyler Downs (hope he is fully healed), part time starters guard Cole McGinnis and tackle Xavier Stilson are both back. Also, I have a feeling that former defensive tackle Gordon Moimoi will be used a lot this year. Everything starts with the line.
Add to that, we have an outstanding stable of RBs, experienced and fast WRs, and a returning QB who is now 100% healthy, not to mention a year smarter. Our O will be much more in control of games this year. Our D will not have to be a solid as they were last year, but they may turn out to be just as good. We will see in about three weeks. Although the SDS game may not be the best measuring stick for how the season will go. :coffee:

STATS FCS 2019: Big Sky Preview

Following is a predicted order of finish and a team-by-team breakdown of the 2019 Big Sky race:

1. Eastern Washington
2. UC Davis
3. Montana State
4. Weber State
5. Montana
6. Northern Arizona
7. Idaho State
8. Southern Utah
9. Idaho
10. Sacramento State
11. Cal Poly
12. Portland State
13. Northern Colorado

4. WEBER STATE

LOCATION: Ogden, Utah

STADIUM: Stewart Stadium

HEAD COACH: Jay Hill (36-26, five seasons)

2018 RECORDS: 10-3 overall, 7-1 Big Sky (Tie/1st) - No. 6 in final STATS FCS Top 25

PROJECTED RETURNING STARTERS: 12 (8 offense/4 defense)

KEY PLAYERS: Jake Constantine, QB, Jr.; Josh Davis, RB, So.; Kevin Smith, RB, Jr.; Rashid Shaheed, WR/KR, Jr.; Ben Bos, C, Jr.; Ty Whitworth, OL, Jr.; Adam Rodriguez, DE, Sr.; Jonah Williams, DE, Sr.; Auston Tesch, LB, Sr.; Desmond Williams, S, Jr. (Boise State transfer); Trey Tuttle, PK, Jr.; Doug Lloyd, P, Sr.

THREE KEY LOSSES: Iosua Opeta, OL; LeGrand Toia, LB; Jordan Preator, CB

OUTLOOK: Key graduation losses make it seem this year's defense won't be as strong as the last two seasons, but DEs Rodriguez and Williams form a top tag-team. Plus, Hill has built the program (21 wins the last two seasons) to withstand such losses. QB Constantine has to cut down on interceptions, but is probably better than advertised. He has plenty of big-play options, including 2018 STATS Jerry Rice Award recipient Davis (1,362 yards, nine TDs on ground), RB Smith (injured last season) and WR/KR Shaheed. The Wildcats had a conference-leading seven players on the Big Sky preseason team.
