Portland State Football has signed six student-athletes on National Letter of Intent Day and they will join the Vikings for the 2021 season.
Although the total number of signees is relatively low for 2021, the Viking program still has to incorporate 21 signees from the 2020 class who have not yet begun their careers at PSU. That means 27 NLI and grant-in-aid signees will be lacing up their cleats for the first time at Portland State for the fall 2021 season.
The Viking program also returns all of its seniors from 2020 as they have been granted another year of eligibility from the NCAA due to the COVID pandemic, limiting the number of available scholarships for 2021. In addition, the NCAA has extended the NLI signing date into August allowing Head Coach Bruce Barnum and his staff to evaluate the spring high school season and add more signees.
Among the 27 newcomers from the last two signing classes are 12 on offense, 14 on defense, and one on special teams (see breakdown below).
The 2021 signing class is heavy with skill position players that have the potential for multiple roles. Barnum and his staff signed three high school student-athletes from the metro area, a fourth from northern Washington and two FBS transfer students.
Barnum is excited about the versatility he is getting from Jayden Brannan (6-3, 190, DB), from Wilson High School. "Jayden is a multi-sport athlete and multi-position athlete on the football field. He can play just about anywhere and in time we will see where he fits best," said Barnum. "He is talented, a great student and can play on either side of the ball."
Other high school signees are Tre Anderson (6-3, 185, WR) from Portland's Jefferson High School, Jessie Brown (6-2, 280, DT) of Olympic High School in Bremerton, WA, and Mason Packer (6-0, 200, ATH), from Skyview High School in Vancouver.
"Tre and Jessie are kids that we offered before the pandemic. They are two talented kids and showed us as juniors what they were capable of," said Barnum. "Jessie is a powerful, explosive athlete. He has a real motor and will thrive at the FCS level. If he were a few inches taller, we wouldn't have had a shot at him. He would go to an FBS.
"Tre is another guy who can play on both sides of the ball."
Packer competed at King's Way Christian High School in 2019 where he played receiver, quarterback and linebacker. He too will have the potential to play a variety of positions.
"Mason is a tremendous athlete too. He has a great future," Barnum said.
Portland State picked up two FBS transfers, Job Dockery (5-11, 190, WR) from Oregon State, and Broderick Harrell (5-11, 200, DB) who spent three years at UTEP.
"Job is a slot receiver and we need more help at that position. He is a kid that we think can be highly productive. He's mature and has been through it, and knows what to expect playing at a high level," said Barnum.
"Broderick had some choices of where to go, but he had some friends here. He is a mature, tough kid who can step in and have an impact right away. He will help us out at safety.
Portland State will begin spring practice around the first of March, though a date has not been set yet. The Vikings program may play as many as two games in early April. PSU, along with four other Big Sky Conference programs, has opted out of the six-game league schedule in the spring of 2021.
