Skyview senior Mason Packer makes verbal commitment to Portland State

https://blogs.columbian.com/high-school-sports/2020/10/08/skyview-senior-mason-packer-makes-verbal-commitment-to-portland-state/

Skyview senior Mason Packer announced Wednesday he has verbally committed to play football for Portland State.

“It is truly a dream come true,” Packer posted on social media. “I am 100 (percent) committed to PSU. Go Viks!”

Packer, listed by 247sports.com as a 6-foot, 200-pound athlete, received his offer from Portland State in the spring.

Packer played his first three high school seasons at King’s Way Christian before choosing to transfer to Skyview last spring.

For the Knights last season, Packer rushed 71 times for 293 yards and four touchdowns. He also completed 41 of 80 passes for 636 yards and seven touchdowns.

Packer expressed thanks to his family, his coach at King’s Way, Brian Rodriguez and Kieran McDonagh, a Skyview graduate and former PSU quarterback.

“First, I would like to thank my family, friends and girlfriend for supporting me,” Packer said. “I would like to give a special thank you to my dad for always being there for me as my dad, coach and trainer. I want to thank my mom for being my biggest supporter. I want to thank coach B-Rod for being a great coach and an even better mentor. I want to thank Kieran McDonagh for helping me a better QB. I want to thank ever A3 trainer who has ever worked with me. Lastly, I want to thank (Portland State coach Bruce) Barnum for giving me this opportunity.”

It does seem rather odd to have no news whatsoever about football.

I'm thinking with the uncertainty of who is coming back and who isn't (which we probably won't know until our season is over in April), as well as Oregon high school football not starting until March, that the kids at our level are unwilling to commit right now. Montana's list was mostly Montana kids but they played high school football there this fall. Griz' only Oregon kid was Cody Brown's brother Liam.

I'm thinking we will hear more about the Oregon kids, especially at the FCS level, this spring.

Olympic football player Brown commits to Portland State

https://www.kitsapsun.com/story/sports/2021/01/24/olympic-football-player-brown-commits-portland-state/6672168002/

Olympic High School senior Jessie Brown spent six weeks this summer embracing the grind, working out in Tacoma with a personal trainer.

Brown's workouts involved hours of endurance training at the picturesque Stadium Bowl, where the endless concrete stairs test athletes' intestinal fortitude.

“Just throwing up crazy" is how Brown described those workouts, which he happily attended in order to become the most prepared 17-year-old football player he can be, even if a fall season never materialized.

Brown's effort paid off this week as he committed to play next season at Portland State University. The 6-2, 285-pound lineman received a full-ride scholarship from the Vikings, members of the Big Sky Conference in the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision.

"I feel blessed," said Brown, offering up gratitude for his mother and the numerous people who've aided his football journey. "That's the bottom line. I feel blessed."

Brown looks forward to getting the opportunity to take the field with the Trojans next month if COVID-19 guidelines allow football teams in Kitsap County to play shortened seasons. Olympic's first of five scheduled contests is set for Feb. 13 at North Kitsap.

"I'm ready to show my growth," Brown said. "Just come out with a bang."

Brown said Portland State began showing interest after his sophomore season in 2018 and made its scholarship offer last April after playing right tackle and nose guard for Olympic during his junior year. Central Washington University also showed interest in Brown, but a visit to Portland State helped confirm Brown's decision to join the Vikings.

"Just walking around the city of Portland, the campus, I just felt comfortable," Brown said. "It felt cool. It felt like a home.”

Olympic assistant football coach Keven Smith, who coaches the team's linemen, said Portland State is getting a guy who plays with passion and isn't afraid of work. Brown projects as an interior defensive lineman at the next level.

"He wants to get better," Smith said.

Brown felt motivated to improve after Olympic's 2019 season finished with a 31-24 district playoff loss against Franklin Pierce. The Trojans (6-4) led the game 24-17 in the fourth quarter before the Cardinals scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes, the second on an interception return.

"After our season ended, I had a sour taste in my mouth," Brown said. "There were night where I couldn't even sleep, thinking, 'What should I do next to help our team out.'"

Olympic High School football player Jessie Brown warms up at Olympic High School on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021.
Brown becoming a better version of himself is a good start. In addition to training at Stadium Bowl this summer, Brown continued to grind while visiting family members in Japan. Days often featured the same morning, afternoon and evening routine: stairs, weights, sleep.

"Just repeat it," Brown said.

Brown isn't the first Olympic lineman to catch the eye of Portland State recruiters. In 2016, Trojans lineman Keith Moore generated offers from Portland State, Eastern Washington and the University of Texas El Paso. Moore chose Eastern Washington and played three seasons for the Eagles (2017-19).

In December, Moore entered the NCAA transfer portal and said this week that he's considering accepting a scholarship offer from Portland State.

Brown said he recently became acquainted with Moore and said he'd love the chance to connect with a fellow Trojan and "mentor" at Portland State.

"It would be really cool," Brown said, "two great athletes from Olympic High School playing Division I ball and just putting Kitsap County on the map is very humbling."

Portland State Football has signed six student-athletes on National Letter of Intent Day and they will join the Vikings for the 2021 season.

Although the total number of signees is relatively low for 2021, the Viking program still has to incorporate 21 signees from the 2020 class who have not yet begun their careers at PSU. That means 27 NLI and grant-in-aid signees will be lacing up their cleats for the first time at Portland State for the fall 2021 season.

The Viking program also returns all of its seniors from 2020 as they have been granted another year of eligibility from the NCAA due to the COVID pandemic, limiting the number of available scholarships for 2021. In addition, the NCAA has extended the NLI signing date into August allowing Head Coach Bruce Barnum and his staff to evaluate the spring high school season and add more signees.

Among the 27 newcomers from the last two signing classes are 12 on offense, 14 on defense, and one on special teams (see breakdown below).

The 2021 signing class is heavy with skill position players that have the potential for multiple roles. Barnum and his staff signed three high school student-athletes from the metro area, a fourth from northern Washington and two FBS transfer students.

Barnum is excited about the versatility he is getting from Jayden Brannan (6-3, 190, DB), from Wilson High School. "Jayden is a multi-sport athlete and multi-position athlete on the football field. He can play just about anywhere and in time we will see where he fits best," said Barnum. "He is talented, a great student and can play on either side of the ball."

Other high school signees are Tre Anderson (6-3, 185, WR) from Portland's Jefferson High School, Jessie Brown (6-2, 280, DT) of Olympic High School in Bremerton, WA, and Mason Packer (6-0, 200, ATH), from Skyview High School in Vancouver.

"Tre and Jessie are kids that we offered before the pandemic. They are two talented kids and showed us as juniors what they were capable of," said Barnum. "Jessie is a powerful, explosive athlete. He has a real motor and will thrive at the FCS level. If he were a few inches taller, we wouldn't have had a shot at him. He would go to an FBS.

"Tre is another guy who can play on both sides of the ball."

Packer competed at King's Way Christian High School in 2019 where he played receiver, quarterback and linebacker. He too will have the potential to play a variety of positions.

"Mason is a tremendous athlete too. He has a great future," Barnum said.

Portland State picked up two FBS transfers, Job Dockery (5-11, 190, WR) from Oregon State, and Broderick Harrell (5-11, 200, DB) who spent three years at UTEP.

"Job is a slot receiver and we need more help at that position. He is a kid that we think can be highly productive. He's mature and has been through it, and knows what to expect playing at a high level," said Barnum.

"Broderick had some choices of where to go, but he had some friends here. He is a mature, tough kid who can step in and have an impact right away. He will help us out at safety.

Portland State will begin spring practice around the first of March, though a date has not been set yet. The Vikings program may play as many as two games in early April. PSU, along with four other Big Sky Conference programs, has opted out of the six-game league schedule in the spring of 2021.

Former Cal QB Jaden Casey lands at Portland State

https://247sports.com/college/california/Article/Former-Cal-QB-Jaden-Casey-lands-at-Portland-State-166932652/

Former Cal quarterback Jaden Casey has landed at his next school. Casey announced his commitment to the Portland State Vikings on Wednesday morning.

Casey made his announcement on Twitter, writing, "First off, I'd like to thank God for continuing to guide me through the bad and the best of times. Also, thank you to my family, friends, and coaches who have been there since day one. With that being said, I'll be transferring to Portland State University!!"

Casey was a 2020 commit at Cal and stayed on the team into the team's spring practices sessions earlier this year. He announced his entry into the transfer portal in March.

Casey said in a statement on Twitter at the time, “First off, I’d like to say thank you to Coach Wilcox, Coach Baldwin, and Coach (Musgrave) for giving me the opportunity to play at the next level. Also, thank you to my teammates here at Cal, the relationships I have built is something I will never forget. But after talking with my family

and people closest to me, I have decided to enter my name in the transfer portal with four years of eligibility remaining.”

The second-year player was expected to be amongst the competition for Cal’s back-up quarterback spot this spring. Following 2020 back-up Devon Modster’s transfer portal entry earlier this offseason, Cal is now searching for its 2021 second-stringer behind returning starter Chase Garbers. Sophomore Spencer Brasch also entered the transfer portal as sophomore Zach Johnson appeared to be getting a leg up in the competition this spring. Cal also returns junior Robby Rowell. This offeason Cal added Western Carolina transfer Ryan Glover and incoming four-star freshman Kai Millner.

Casey was Cal’s No. 1 ranked commit in the 2020 recruiting class, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite rankings. He flipped from his long-time commitment to former Cal coach Jeff Tedford at Fresno State to instead be a Golden Bear. Casey ranked as the No. 20 pro-style quarterback recruit in the 2020 class.

The Calabasas High School grad hauled in 21 offers during the recruiting process including Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa State, Kansas State, Oregon State, Purdue, Utah and Washington State.
