2022-23 MBB Season

I agree about the BSC. The conference looks absolutely putrid right now and is much more wide open than I anticipated.

I’m hoping a few more players get worked into the rotation. Once BSC play hits, playing at elevation is going to take its toll and going at it with a 7 man rotation is asking a lot.

Hornets (3-3) get ran off the court by Hawaii (4-1), 61-74 at the North Shore Classic. Only 9 shots taken by Hunt and Patterson as Chappell (1/6 from 3) had a horrid game. Hornets face Southern Utah to close out the tournament.

Gave away a win to SUU last night. The free throw shooting finally cost us a game, missed 3 of four in final minute and lost in double OT. 0-2 in Hawaii.

Yep. Hornets (3-4) lose 87-91 in double OT to Southern Utah (4-3) to close out the North Shore Classic. Hornets choked it away at the free throw line in regulation, this was a game we should have won. SUU is a good team, but this win was there for the taking. 5 Hornets were in double figures in this extended affair. Chappell (23 pts) led the Hornets in scoring.

Hornets hit the road to face a tough Santa Clara (5-2) team next weekend.

Almost gave away another one last night at home to DU, but a thrilling end to regulation and OT, courtesy of Zach Chappell, sent folks home happy!

I was there, a total rollercoaster of a game. Hornets get a slow start and fell behind by 10, then came roaring back and tied it at half, then took a 10 point lead, then blew that and gave up the lead late, then forced OT, then pulled ahead in OT, then the refs made some horrible calls that led to another tie, then Chappell with the blow-by to win the game. Phew, what a ride.

Hornets (3-5) lose at Santa Clara (7-2), 65-72. Hornets kept it close until late. Chappell (17 pts), McRae (15 pts, 14 reb) and Mawein (12 pts) all hit double digits in scoring.

Hornets (4-5) win a wild one in the Nest over Denver (8-2), 87-85. Chappell (25 pts) went off and got all his point in the 2nd half and overtime. Mawein (15 pts, 7 reb) Wilbon (15 pts, 5 reb, 8 ast), and McRae (10 pts, 7 reb) also had a good scoring game. Overall a great team effort with the exception of some late turnovers that let Denver back in it. Phenomenal game at the stripe for the Hornets (14/15). Both of Denver's losses have come from the Hornets.

Hornets (5-5) knock off Long Beach State (4-5), 76-74, with some late game heroics from Chappell (25 pts, 5 reb) as he made the game winning bucket in the closing seconds. Hornets controlled the game for most of the way and shot 13/28 from deep but some late turnovers let LBSU back into it. Patterson (14 pts) had an impactful game as well.

Last week the Hornets went to Fresno (4-7) and beat FSU, 59-53. Hornets played a solid game on both sides of the floor as McRae (21 pts, 6 reb) was unstoppable inside. Hunt had a couple of clutch 3’s in the closing minutes that kept the Hornets in front. Hornets went 7/9 from the charity stripe that also sealed the win.

Hornets lost at CSU Fullerton (6-6), 49-59. A second half lull by the Hornets proved to be the difference as it was a close game until that moment. Mawein (14 pts, 7 reb) led the Hornets in scoring.

Hornets (6-6) close out non-conference play tonight at the Nest against CSU Stanislaus (3-8, 1-4 CCAA).

Thrilling comeback against PSU for the men, the women handled business @PSU.

Get this, the best records in the BSC for the men and women belong to Sac State.

Good to not drop this one at home. Played poorly first twenty five minutes, then turned it around. Started making our threes, controlled the boards, and played with more defensive intensity. Would like to see us force it inside a little earlier. Seems like we do that more in the second half of games and it pays dividends. When we keep it on the perimeter we make too many turnovers. Road trip this week will be interesting. Idaho has maybe the best big in the conference in Isaac Jones. They have more talented transfers than the last few seasons. We will need to play defense the entire game. Eastern Washington went on the road and swept the Montana schools. They are tall. All of their rotation players are 6’5” to 6’10” we need to limit turnovers and make a good percentage from three.

This has happened too many times this season with the first half woes....I would like to suggest that Patrick give his half time speech pre-game....Whatever he is saying at half is working wonders so why not just do it an hour earlier....lol

Hornets beat Stan State, 72-51. A slow start by the Hornets resulted in a 8 point deficit at halftime. Then the Hornets woke up for the 2nd half and rolled to a big win to close out non-conference play.

Hornets (8-6, 1-0 BSC) beat Portland State (6-8, 0-1 BSC), 74-63 in the Nest. Another slow first half start and 7 point halftime deficit and 15 point 2nd half deficit turned around on a 40-9 run that resulted in a BSC win. 4 Hornets had at least 10 points with Chappell (18 pts) leading the way in scoring and Mawein (10 pts, 11 reb) grabbing a double double.

Hornets (9-6, 2-0 BSC) open BSC road play with a 85-83 overtime win at Idaho (6-10, 0-3 BSC). The Hornets let a late lead slip away but take care of business in the extra session. MacRae (27 pts, 17 reb), Chappell (22 pts), and Wilbon (18 pts, 6 reb) accounted for all but 18 of the Hornets points. Idaho’s Jones (42 pts, 12 reb) was a beast on the other side.

Hornets (9-7, 2-1 BSC) lose at Eastern Washington (10-7, 4-0 BSC), 75-78. Hornets overcome a horrid first half that resulted in a 21 point halftime deficit and got some late game heroics from Chappell (23 pts) to tie it on a 3 in the closing seconds, but EWU escaped with a shot from Venters (25 pts) in their final possession.

The Hornets (9-7, 2-1 BSC) will host Northern Colorado (5-10, 0-3 BSC) and Northern Arizona (5-12, 1-3 BSC) next week.

Hornets finish the season 14-17 (7-11 BSC). After a good non-conference showing and a solid first half of BSC play, the Hornets fell apart and went 2-7 in the back half of conference play. A lot of those losses were close and 5 of the last 7 were on the road. The Hornets do head into the BSCT with a little bit of momentum following a 76-74 road win at Portland State.

I was hoping we could have had a winning season to open up Patrick’s tenure but it was a solid showing nonetheless. IMO the talent was there to be a bit better in a conference that isn’t very good, there isn’t much separation from the teams in this conference this season. Patrick and this staff needs to do a much better job in crunch time as this team struggled in the tight games against the press and inbounding the ball in critical moments. The X’s & O’s just have to be better to win at this level as does the in-game adjustments.

Going into the BSCT, the Hornets earned the 6th seed in the BSCT and avoid the first round. Hornets face 3rd seeded Weber State on Monday. Hornets lost twice to WSU by a total of 5 points so this game is winnable. If the Hornets can scratch out a win, Montana State would likely be the next opponent and the Hornets lost two close games to them this season.

BSCT Quarterfinal: 64-70 Hornet loss to Weber State. The Hornets got off to a horrible start and couldn’t recover. The Hornets just didn’t take care of the ball early and fell behind by too many against a solid Wildcat team that just couldn’t miss in the first half. The Hornets were able to climb back into it, but it was too little too late. McRae (16 pts, 8 reb) and Chappell (14 pts) finish off their careers.

Hornets finish the season with a respectable 14-18 (7-12 BSC) record. This program made some solid strides under Coach Patrick’s first season, but there is still quite a ways to go. Things are trending in the right direction for this program.

The women were 14-16 under Campbell in year 1.

Perhaps Coach Patrick and the men's program can make a similar jump in year 2?
