• Hi Guest,

We've updated the site to combine all the forums that were part of the Big Sky Fans Network into one location. This will make it easier to navigate and participate in all the discussions for each school without having to have multiple accounts, etc. We are still working out some tweaks but please let us know if you notice anything.

With the migration, in some circumstances, your username could have been merged with one of your other usernames from the other forums. If this is the case, you can request to change your username in your account details page of your profile.

2024 Spring Game

I made it to the spring game today, I wasn't really planning on going but my morning plans wrapped up and I was able to make it out. Great atmosphere, credit to all those that made it happen. Highlights from the past season were on loop on the video board, the PA guy was doing his thing that added to the in-session hype, music was blasting out during the game, there were food trucks in the north endzone, some tables were set up in the south endzone and there was something going on outside of the Broad. Well done and executed by all those involved. I'd estimate about a thousand people were at the stadium today. Lots of young players in attendance as well. I was told a clinic occurred before the scrimmage and a lot of them hung around to check it out.

On the field, only Conklin and Cooks suited up. KB was on the sideline with a boot on his foot. I didn't see Camp, if he was there he wasn't wearing his jersey. Conklin looked good right out of the gate. He had some good throws and good scrambles on the day. The defense tightened up as the scrimmage progressed and the offensive line struggled to keep a clean pocket for most of the day and Conklin struggled under the duress. Not much to say about Cook, only that he looked like a freshman adjusting to the speed of the D1 game.

On the ground, nothing really stood out. I don't recall any big runs being made. Curron Borders looks like a tough runner. ETT had some plays run to him in space and he looked solid. Nothing much to say about the wide receivers other than they made plays when the ball was there. Solid play by both the running back and wide receivers on the day.

Defense looked lively. They were quick to the ball on the underneath routes but I think the noticeable aspect of today was the pressure up front. Lots of pressure from various players up front (I didn't catch the names) as there were quite a few "sacks" on the day. Secondary got torched early but tightened up as the scrimmage went on. The pressure up front was a big help.

The Hornets ran some field goal sets to close out the scrimmage. Only Kiely was used and he missed more than he made when the ball was moved beyond the 30-35 yard range.

Also there was an announcement on season tickets. For those that renew for next season, you can renew at the same price as last season. There might have been a deadline on that deal but not sure. Keep an eye out on Hornetsports for when they go on sale.

Well that's not encouraging to hear. I wonder why Zach Schreiner wasn't taking reps? I also hope we bring in a second punter for fall camp since there's only one listed as of right now.

Schreiner was on the sidelines not suited but playing catch/kick with Kiely. Maybe the coaches just wanted to give the younger kicker some run.

Thanks for being there SD, I guess the boot for KB explains why he's been MIA. He's not in the Portal. The more options we have at QB the better!

As college football teams conclude spring drills, plenty of questions remain before the start of August camp. This is the case at Sacramento State, where the Hornets on Saturday afternoon capped 14 days of spring drills with the annual Spring Game at Hornet Stadium. This much seems certain: Sacramento State returns enough player talent and is anchored by a stellar coaching staff to compete for the program’s fourth Big Sky Conference championship since 2019. The season opener is Aug. 29 at San Jose State. The Green team defeated the Hornets’ White team 24-12, followed by the coaches meeting with players in groups, and then an autograph session and a meet-and-greet with fans. Head coach Andy Thompson was beaming afterward. More than 100 Hornets football alumni dating back to the 1960s were on hand, as were some 200 high school football recruits from throughout Northern California.

“Spring is all about improvement and getting to see a lot of different guys, and I thought we got to see a lot of guys,” Thompson said. “We still have a lot to work on, but we’re encouraged.” Here are three questions defining the Hornets heading into summer: WHO WILL PLAY QB? The Hornets in recent weeks were jolted by injuries to last season’s opening-day starter Kaiden Bennett and backup Carson Camp, both of whom missed the majority of spring ball with leg injuries Camp suffered a knee injury. Bennett sustained a lower leg fracture, though the senior from Folsom High School said he will be ready to go in a matter of weeks. Carson Conklin sparkled in games last season as a true freshman out of Los Angeles County, and he looked the part throughout the spring and in parts of Saturday’s game when he passed for 142 yards and two touchdowns. The trio of Bennett, Conklin and Camp passed for 3,155 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2023. Joey Cook, a redshirt freshman from Novato, saw extensive time this spring.

The Hornets graduated leading rusher Marcus Fulcher but return runners Zeke Burnett, Ezra Moleni and Elijah Tau-Tolliver, and coaches got a peek at redshirt freshman Curron Borders of Antelope High. WHAT’S UP FRONT? The offensive line under position coach Kris Richardson has been the team’s foundation since the Hornets rose swiftly to power in 2019.

Sacramento State will remain formidable in the trenches with four starters returning, including Jackson Slater, who has started 34 career games at guard. He will be joined this fall by center Nathan Mejia, who has 27 career starts, guard Kenndell Riley of Rocklin High (seven career starts) and tackle Aidan Meeks at tackle (nine career starters).

WHO WILL RUSH THE PASSER? The Hornets since the start of 2019 have been among the top defensive teams in the Big Sky and on the FCS landscape under coach Thompson, the team’s defensive coordinator, but three of the team’s starting defensive linemen from 2023 have moved on. The lone returning starter is defensive end DeShawn Lynch of Folsom High, who had 34 tackles last season, including 6½ for loss. Josh Cashiola and Ben Ahip each saw time at defensive tackle and expect to settle into starting roles. Brandon Knott of Inderkum High will return though he missed the spring season to rehab an injury. The returning sack leader is Mason Brosseau, who had three sacks.

Was Dr. Martin Luther Sting, Jr. (Dr. Wood) roaming the sidelines as well?
