2025-26 Roster and Coaches Updates

While I'm not a fan of wholesale changes, perhaps in our case it was needed. The big thing I don't like (and I'm not saying that it's the case here), I've seen with Colorado football and Nevada softball in the last few years, a new coach comes in and tells everyone to hit the portal.

That said, is there anything special about the one who stayed, Kadeezy? Thank you.

What a train wreck of a coaching staff. Not one coach has college coaching experience. It is a collection of Bibby’s friends. Most of them worked on the same high school coaching staff were he got his only coaching experience. How can you name someone an associate head coach when they pretty much have no coaching experience. Guess it makes sense when the head coach has no experience. Of course one of them is his son. As for the roster our one returner is getting a fifth year because of the ruling that if you played at a junior college you get an extra year of eligibility for next year only. At best he is a rotational player on any other Big Sky team. Our first signee happens to be Shaq’s son who was not good enough to start for two lower level teams. Our second signee happens to be the son of another former NBA player who was a walk on at his last program and didn’t get in a game. There were a few players from last years team that an experienced coach would have wanted to keep but they were all asked to go in the portal. Not holding out much hope for Hornet’s basketball.

I don’t think Orr is calling the shots in football or basketball. He said a couple times previously that he would not hire Bibby. I think President Wood is making all the decisions and Orr is along for the ride and hoping to keep his job. Here is info on Bibby’s contract from the State Hornet:
According to documents obtained by The State Hornet, Sacramento State’s newly hired men’s basketball coach, Mike Bibby, is under contract until 2030 and will receive $300k per year. The 5-year deal includes multiple incentives and relocation assistance in the form of a $20k lump sum.

In the contract, Bibby will receive a supplemental talent fee of $150k, a vehicle stipend of $400/month and $15k if Sac State wins the Big Sky Conference championship.

Assuming the talent fee is a one time payment. Guessing it is to pay players? Five years is a long time to be on the hook for this experiment.

I guess I'll hold out hope that in basketball, more than any other sport, success has more to do with the talent level of the players as opposed to the skill of the coach.

I'm talking about players making up for poor strategies with playmaking, pure hooping. Bear is one of those guys that will make up for coaching shortcomings, but we need about 5-7 more of those players to make this team competitive.

It's concerning that we only have 5 players on the roster at this point. Most rosters are filling up quickly, ours does not seem to be after the initial rush.

I wince when I read his term sheet. 5 years? Very unorthodox coaching staff.
Not holding my breath on this experiment.
Everything seems to be smoke & mirrors, the blueblood kids he has signed are coming from mediocre programs at best.
How hard is Shaq's kid going to play when his dad is worth $1T?

This isn't uncharted territory for this program. While it wasn't to this extreme, DP had to turn over a pretty weak roster when he took over from Laird. In this free agency age of D1 athletics, there's going to be more players available then roster spots so filling the roster isn't the issue. The issue is the same issue this program has always had and that's filling the roster with enough quality talent to be competitive.

The lack of coaching experience is concerning, but IMO it's not as critical in this current free agency era as it was in prior eras. The age of developing talent over 3-5 years is over, it's now about assembling the best talent on a year to year basis. Maybe we hold on to good talent for 2 years, but most likely a hot commodity is gone after a stellar season (look around the BSC, lots of top talent hit the portal). If these coaches have an "in" on quality talent and being able to bring them here then this might work. If it doesn't work then the on-court product will be no different than the many failed seasons of past regimes.

The issue is these coaches would all know the same players because they've been working together or in similar areas.
