I'd be way more amped about this if Aiden Carter wasn't going on a mission for 2 years. I guess Jake Schakel is coming off his red shirt season though.
 
Isn't Schakel an incoming Freshman. If he's the read deal I'd sort of like to see him on the field in the fall as an investment in the future. We'll still have Taylor for one year to fill the running QB role.
 
Schakel will be a redshirt freshmen next year. I took a quick look at the three returning QB's and the freshmen coming in. Here are my two cents. Granted, this is just me trying to compare EWU past with our current offensive scheme.

-Jared Taylor - will be a Senior. We have all seen him play and know where his strengths are. Throwing is not his best strength, but if we continue to throw as many WR screens and quick hits, he would be just fine. Still don't feel he will be option one when in must have passing situations.

-Nate Bell - 5'9" 182lbs. Will be a redshirt sophomore. Received some playing time this year with a few runs but did not attempt a pass. There was no need to since it was Idaho St. He came out of high school as a 2 star per 247. When watching his video, he is a play maker and has a great high arcing deep ball that makes it easier for the WR to catch. We have been missing that. I can't believe I'm saying this, but he reminds me a VA. Moves like VA, but looks like a better runner. Again, he is 5'9"ish. About an inch or two shorter than VA. Next year will be his 3rd year in this offensive.

-Anthony Quinones -6'2" 200lbs. Will be a redshirt freshman. Came out of high school as a 3 star, 1st team all state, and was offered by multiple FBS schools. Anthony is a true pro-style QB and you can see that on his video. Looks to be able to make all the throws and also has a great deep ball. Has good pocket awareness and can run when needed. However, appears to not have the legs of Taylor and Bell.

-Jake Schakel - True Freshman - 6'2" 190lbs. 2star per 247. After watching his game videos, he will redshirt and most likely back up either Bell or Quinones in the future.

Not sure who will be the main passing QB and not sure how either Nate or Bell will develop as a passer if we continue to run this offense. Based solely on how the offense operated this year, I would put Bell as the front runner. Guess we will find out more come Spring.

Is losing Visperas that big of a loss? Good, but not great. He had a ridiculous completion percentage, but only threw the ball more than 10 yards down the field 3 or 4 times per game. You could make a credible argument that he'd have been nowhere without Chism, as that was the only guy he regularly targeted.

Visperas threw 272 passes and 202 completions (good numbers). Chism accounted for 120 of those catches. When was the last time a QB threw 60% of his completions to one single receiver? The fact he couldn't integrate other WRs into the mix says some bad things. He rader'ed one guy, and that guy bailed him out more often than not.

Chism had 120 total catches for the year, I don't believe all of those catches were Visperas passes. The good with Visperas outweighs the bad in my view, he only threw 2 picks all year and had the ridiculous completion percentage you mentioned. EWU was the top FCS offense with third down conversion percentage, Visperas and his accuracy contributed to that success. He is a difficult quarterback to defend because he can also run, last season he had 9 rushing touchdowns. I think he would have likely had a worse stats next season had he returned because of the number of offensive players who are graduating or entering the portal but I don't see him leaving as a good thing.

If you don't like being incredibly 1-dimensional it matters. Eastern has always moved the ball by being multiple spread offense. I think with our defense we're going to get behind and not be able to catch up quickly.

He is one of the best receivers in the FCS for a reason, cause he gets open. If I'm a QB I'm obvious starting my progressions with him. You make it sound like he is playing favorites or was just incapable of throwing it to anyone else which isn't true, a few receivers had good games. That's what is great about having a really good receiver, they get doubled and that opens up someone else. That's like saying how good is a QB without good receivers. VA wouldn't have been much without Kupp, Bourne and Hill.

If you wanted to make the argument that Visperas isn't a big loss you'd look to the heir apparent in Jared Taylor. He is a running QB with not a lot of arm talent, even less than Visperas which you say is good not great. I think Best valued him as a passer cause he would put Taylor in for intentional run plays as to not risk injuring Visperas.

But like I said somewhere else. I wouldn't even care that much about Visperas leaving if Aiden Carter wasn't going on a mission. Idk, maybe they'll find a transfer or Jake Schakel will step up.
 
We will look even more different next year offensively as the word on the street is that Chapin is leaving to be the OC for Central Michigan and is taking Mace the OL coach with. Gonna be interesting...........

Oh Coach Mac retired. Interesting. They can have them tbh. I was never impressed with Chapin's play calling although it's probably heavily influenced by Best. The genius move would be to hire Baldwin as OC but that would never happen. Best would literally be that meme of the guy dripping sweat.

Reading this makes me angry at how woefully these players are getting coached and what the game plans are omitting. Huge losses in talent? Probably not given what that the coaching IQ won't change. Seeing the decimation of the receiving corps the past 2 seasons really hurts, it wasn't Kupp good but it was BigSky good potentially. The play of the defense is mind boggling poor and has bled some of the better players for the past several years... I know Blakely didn't make a huge impact but he was potentially one of the best LB's used poorly. Nothing about my opinion of Best has changed for the past 4 years now... It shows in every detail of how the organization is running.
