#4 Weber State @ Pocatello State 2/27/21

Weber likely will head into this game as a double digit favorite having beaten their alleged rival in 16 of the last 18 games.

Both teams will be starting a new QB this year as the 2019 starters entered the the transfer portal in the off season.

Per the ISU ticket office, kickoff is tentatively set at 4pm, however no fans will be allowed to attend this game.

I feel bad for the Pocatello Tater Tossers. They have to play us 2 times within 6 weeks. I don't wish that on anyone. We are the Clemson of the FCS rankings. Idaho State is well. ummm Idaho State. I really do feel bad for them. Its going to get ugly.

I'm not as sure as you are. ISU has been working hard to raise their program up. They have brought in a G5 transfer QB, just like us. They seem to have added weapons that they didn't have before. I still think it will be a battle. I think we will win, of course, but I don't think it will be easy. I don't think that any of our games will be easy. We will see, I guess.

I think the Big Sky is a tough game week in and week out. First games are always a bit tricky, too. I will have to see the offense to gain any confidence of a blowout win. I think Weber State wins by like 14-17 points, but those games can sometimes still feel too close until a late score puts it away.

ISU has definitely been doing what it can to get better, and I feel that their program might be as good as what it was 7-6 years ago. The bad thing for the Bengals is that everyone else in the Sky has been getting better too. The Big Sky, along with the MVC and CAA are the premier conference in FCS (I'd love to see a Big Sky vs. Sun Belt/MAC challenge, top to bottom I feel we would be competitive and win a lot of games. Even if they were all away.)

ISU's HC is an offensive guru and we all know that they can put up points in a hurray. The first week, can be interesting and there is a chance for some surprises; especially since nobody has played in a long time. Finally, playing in the LOLT comes with a ton of issues too. Yet what differentiates the two programs is defense. Weber's defense has been championship caliber. While ISU, is better still isn't anywhere on par with what is needed to win championships. I think this Spring definitely helps them though. They will be a lot better than some teams because they are playing this spring.

An interesting thing for Weber is special teams. A lot of new faces in that area of the game. Am I worried? No. But, in that facet of the game, we are pretty much starting over. Good thing we bring back plenty of weapons in our return game though.

Lets talk QBs...who starts?

I have nothing to base it on, just a WAG, but I feel that the added experience that Johnson brings to the game, may be what helps him win the position over Barron. I think Weiser has to be in the conversation as well.

It's interesting to me that our practices have been closed. That may be due to installing a new offense, and wanting to keep ISU in the dark. Football is football, but there may be a few trick plays thrown in for this first game. Those sort of plays are always fun and can get the guys juiced on both sides of the ball.

Just 2 more weeks to go. Buckle up. :coffee:

Olds, do you have some reason for indicating that Barron may be ahead of Weisser in the competition for QB? I agree with you about Johnson. I think the staff would not have brought him in if they didn't already know that he would be better (by experience or otherwise) than the two young guys.

The only thing I have to put Barron ahead is video from their HS days and even that is quite similar. Really it is just a gut feeling on my part. It certainly could be the other way around. Maybe it has something to do with Weiser being the third guy last year, a year that we thought was sub par for our QB room. None of us are there to see the day to day progress of these players, so it is all supposition. I'm just hoping for a significantly improved pass game.

You really need 3 to 4 guys you feel comfortable with at each of your skill positions. Injuries can and do happen.

I'm counting on a deeper, much improved O line. That will make everything flow better. :coffee:

Here it is, down to the final two. Looks like it's down to Barron and Johnson .

Barron must be having some good practices to still be in contention as a Freshman to a FBS transfer in Johnson.

I’m very excited to see how the offense does. I think it will be improved with a passing game that can keep defenses honest and not stacking the box.

Hill signing a two-year extension is great...although I think a big program will come calling before then.

Anybody thinking this will be an easy win needs to take a little look at history. Yes this rivalry is lopsided but since 2000 Weber has 2 losses in Pokey ( Both blowouts btw) and 8 wins with only an average win margin of 12.2 points. Only twice in the 8 wins up there have been by more than 15 points. It is still a rivalry game after all and though I expect a Wildcat win. It may be closer than we like just by going off history.

With the basketball game at Idaho State canceled today, is the football game for sure on in a week? ESPN app is also showing Cal Poly at UC Davis game postponed. I know two bye weeks were built in for this reason, but I’m still getting nervous.

Basketball games canceled due to covid issues within the MSU program.

CP/UCD game postponed due to CP having to pause activities for 17 days prior to resuming practices yesterday, 2/19. They just haven't been able to practice enough to play on the 27th.

It's encouraging that we haven't heard of any covid issues from Weber or ISU. Game on the 27th is still on track. The game at CP a week later a little more iffy but after postponing their 1st game I think CP will be doing everything they can to play that game.

BTW, I called ISU the other day and no single game or guest tickets will be sold. They'll allow a limited amount of booster club members and season ticket holders to attend.

Thanks for the information. Glad it’s looking good for Saturday. I’ll be watching Pluto TV. I am very excited for the season. The team looks talented with a lot of depth. The QB, offensive scheme, and kicking game are kind of the big unknowns. I’m optimistic they will be good.

It should be a great Saturday on Pluto. We can watch the MBB game at Sac and then the FB game at ISU. That's a lot of viewing. I'll probably have to have the Pie deliver some pizza. :coffee:

Anyone know if a starting QB has been named?
Tune in on Saturday. I wouldn't be surprised to see them both play. I also won't be surprised to see 4 or five RBs play. I'm excited to see some of the new guys play. We should be improved in our TE play, our WR play, our QB play, our OL play, and our secondary play. The rest of our game should be at the same level we are accustomed to seeing. This has the potential of being a very special year, both this spring and next fall. :coffee:
