Seems generous to me...nice we are riding our rep.
There is no way that is generous! If anything is generous, it is SHSU's ranking. The Bearkats are a top 10 team, have a solid coach, some incredible players, and some extremely eye-popping stats against weak competition. They will have a tougher schedule this year, and if they can beat Richmond, I will give them some more credit. But until then, they shouldn't be higher then 8th.
EWU has a new HC, but he is an EKG, and carries the Eagle torch forward. It isn't some outsider that doesn't understand the culture that has bred the success Eastern has experienced. I agree there may be some growing pains through the transition, but the level of talent we have will compensate for a lot of that. EWU is one of the three most talented and deepest teams in the FCS. If Best, and the new coaches don't get in the way, and just let the players play the game they can, EWU can and should go just as far as last year. And the new recruits are going to continue to move that tradition forward.
I'm OK with 5th, but I sure as heck don't feel like it is reputation only. This defense is going to be stronger, so even if the offense takes a slight step back (which I don't think it will), it will be compensated for. I think we will see a more balanced offensive attack, with Custer, Pierce, and McPherson producing more consistent running gains behind a more experienced O-line. I think Custer could have a great year, and become a star in his own right. The receivers are solid and will be a threat. And Gubrud is grew so much throughout last year, he will dominate. It sucks to lose some of the players that have left, or been dismissed, but we have the players to fill in those gaps.
I was way more tentative last year, and they blew away my expectations. This year, based on time and experience, was when I really thought the team would be dominant. I think that is still the case.
