Don't you think the talent returning is top five? Come on.. I know you do. :-) I know that Dopa will hate to write off the powerhouses at ISU, PSU and Sac St; but this is a talented team. (just kidding Dopa, chill...)

The only question mark is how the new staff comes together and whether or not Best kills 'em before the season starts with his Texas A&M Bear Bryant routine. I think the players are up for it, but it is a risk with FCS depth limitations. Going with trust on this one. Coach B has been here, knows the players and wants to win championships. Feels right.

There is no way that is generous! If anything is generous, it is SHSU's ranking. The Bearkats are a top 10 team, have a solid coach, some incredible players, and some extremely eye-popping stats against weak competition. They will have a tougher schedule this year, and if they can beat Richmond, I will give them some more credit. But until then, they shouldn't be higher then 8th.

EWU has a new HC, but he is an EKG, and carries the Eagle torch forward. It isn't some outsider that doesn't understand the culture that has bred the success Eastern has experienced. I agree there may be some growing pains through the transition, but the level of talent we have will compensate for a lot of that. EWU is one of the three most talented and deepest teams in the FCS. If Best, and the new coaches don't get in the way, and just let the players play the game they can, EWU can and should go just as far as last year. And the new recruits are going to continue to move that tradition forward.

I'm OK with 5th, but I sure as heck don't feel like it is reputation only. This defense is going to be stronger, so even if the offense takes a slight step back (which I don't think it will), it will be compensated for. I think we will see a more balanced offensive attack, with Custer, Pierce, and McPherson producing more consistent running gains behind a more experienced O-line. I think Custer could have a great year, and become a star in his own right. The receivers are solid and will be a threat. And Gubrud is grew so much throughout last year, he will dominate. It sucks to lose some of the players that have left, or been dismissed, but we have the players to fill in those gaps.

I was way more tentative last year, and they blew away my expectations. This year, based on time and experience, was when I really thought the team would be dominant. I think that is still the case.

Ok Lucky and Dude you caught me! For real, we got screwed should be a little higher. As always we don't get the respect we deserve...guess we aren't riding the rep as much as we could.

Knew you were holding out on us :D After looking over the top 25, there are some good teams on there. Wofford should surprise to the upside this season.

LOL!

I would be shocked if we don't win the big sky outright, but I would be pretty surprised we we are much higher than #8 going into the playoffs.

Defense continues to improve and hopefully a more balanced offensive attack keeps producing W's throughout the season. 9-2 come playoff time.
W's against NDSU and tough road losses against TT & someone we shouldn't lose to in the Sky would be my prediction.

Jim Allen's optimism piece a few days ago paints a reasonable path to a 3-1 start. If that happens, 9-2 seems likely. Two loss seasons have meant a top 5 or higher seed in the past. We're a lock for a top 4 if we beat a playoff bound UND with losses to NDSU and/or TTU or some other .500 or better opponent.

Not to derail the thread, but what does everyone feel about EB3's readiness to step in for Gage if necessary? In my opinion, depth is what will take this team far. Eric will see the field this season. Is he ready?

My goodness can we at least get to game 1 before talking top 5 seeds. Remember the season after the natty???
Playoffs are not a forgone conclusion/done deal. They still have to play.

This team isn't a mystery, how they respond to all the changes is a little squiffy.

Oh, this is a poll, well you get the point, it does not matter. I'm interested in being #1 on the field, and that starts 24 days from now!

No. :coffee:

I'm a realist and usually anticipate 7-4 to 8-3 even for our loaded teams. Too many bad bounces, injuries, and tough schedules to not recognize.

But I also enjoy thinking and talking about the playoffs and looking at team's schedules across the Big Sky and the nation.

You don't have to if you don't want to.
