The NCAA Division I adopted an age-based "5-for-5" eligibility model, allowing athletes to compete for five seasons within a five-year window. The eligibility clock begins either upon initial full-time college enrollment or at the start of the academic year following an athlete's 19th birthday, whichever happens first.

Key Details of the "5-for-5" Model
- Five Seasons to Play: Athletes are no longer capped at four seasons; they can actively compete in all five seasons.
- Elimination of Redshirts: The traditional redshirt and medical hardship waivers are effectively eliminated across college sports, except for specific circumstances like maternity leave, official religious missions, and active-duty military service.
- Timeline and Rollout: Schools can choose to use previous eligibility rules or transition to the new model for athletes already competing, while all incoming recruits for the 2027–28 season will be under the mandatory 5-for-5 framework.
