#5 Hornets @ Cal Poly

Celebration is over... this game scares me to death. We have seen deep balls work against us, and we are facing a CP team with Beau Baldwin and Erik Meyer having two weeks to plan how to exploit it.

I think we will see the return of some complex blitzes (we've really been trying to get pressure done with the front four) this week, which increase the chances of big plays for both sides. Fun game, but I think this will be a squeaker. No matter what the line is, I don't think we cover. I'm worried about the W even. Only game all year on grass as well, which is a wrinkle most will forget about.

They recently installed turf.

I thought I had heard that... but checked their facilities page... I guess they need to update it.... https://gopoly.com/facilities/alex-g-spanos-stadium/3

Thank god. I agree, definitely a trap game. Long bus ride against a wel coached team coming off a bye.

Hornets still roll…

38-21

I fully understand that anything can happen in a college football game but I can't even remember the last time Cal Poly beat a good football team...and we are a REALLY good football team. I have complete confidence that the coaching staff and players will go down there and take care of business.

I agree OSH

Week 5 - #5 Sac State at Cal Poly

The 5th ranked Hornets (3-0, 0-0 BSC) hit the road for the third straight week and open up Big Sky play with an in-state rivalry game at Cal Poly (1-2, 0-0 BSC). The Mustangs are coming off a bye week following a rough start to the season and host the Hornets for homecoming. Cal Poly’s lone win came with some late game heroics at home against San Diego, 28-27, that was followed up by a competitive road loss at South Dakota, 21-38.

Cal Poly’s offense likes to spread it out from the shotgun and mix in some read-option to try and keep the defense honest. Quarterback Jaden Jones (50/88, 655 yds, 5 TD, 26 car, 95 yds) has started every game but went out with an injury at South Dakota. Cal transfer and back-up quarterback Spencer Brasch (24/42, 362 yds, 3 TD, 1 INT) throws the ball well but is not the running threat that Jones is. The Mustangs have some solid possession receivers that can make plays when the ball is there. Wide receiver Chris Coleman (19 rec, 290 yds, 2 TD) is the main target but three other receivers have at least 8 catches and 100+ receiving yards. The Mustangs don’t have the offensive line to get much of a run game going. Running back Shakobe Harper (43 car, 187 yds) spearheads the rushing attack but the Mustangs have yet to score a rushing touchdown this season.

Offensive Team Stats
  • Points scored per game: 18.7
  • Total Offense: 442.7 ypg (103.7 rushing ypg / 339.0 passing ypg)
  • Turnovers: 1/3 (INT/Fum)
  • Redzone: 2/8 - 2/0 (TD/FG)

The Mustang defense lines up in a 4-2-5 and have had their struggles in keeping opponents off the scoreboard or stiffening up in the redzone. Cal Poly is starting a lot of underclassmen so this is a young unit that is still finding its footing. Linebacker David Meyer (17 tkl, 2 TFL, 2 sac) leads the team in tackles and is tied in team sacks along side defensive end Dustin Grein (15 tkl, 4 TFL, 2 sac) and defensive tackle Ethan Rodriguez (7 tkl, 3 TFL, 2 sac).

Defensive Team Stats
  • Points allowed per game: 33.3
  • Total Defense: 483.3 ypg (160.0 rushing ypg / 323.3 passing ypg)
  • Turnovers: 3/0 (INT/Fum)
  • Redzone: 10/12 - 7/3 (TD/FG)

Cal Poly’s special teams have only attempted one field goal on the year and it was no good, so it’s hard to gauge how good (or bad) kicker Jaden Ohlsen (0/1 FG, 8/8 PAT) is. The punting duties have been split between Michael Roth (8 punts) and Jesse Ehrlich (6 punts). Roth seems to have a slightly bigger leg as he has 2 punts over 50 yards.

Hornet Team Stats
  • Points scored per game: 44.7
  • Points allowed per game: 21.3
  • Total Offense: 469.3 ypg (236.0 rushing ypg / 233.3 passing ypg)
  • Total Defense: 411.7 ypg (93.7 rushing ypg / 318.0 passing ypg)
  • Turnovers: 1/1 (INT/Fum)
  • Turnovers Forced: 4/3 (INT/Fum)
  • Redzone Offense: 16/18 - 13/3 (TD/FG)
  • Redzone Defense: 8/10 - 5/3 (TD/FG)

This game shouldn’t be close if the Hornets show up and take care of business. While I think the Mustang offense will be able to move the ball through the air regardless of which quarterback starts, they still have to get scores on this bend but don’t break style of Hornet defense. On the other side of the ball, I don’t think Cal Poly’s defense will get enough stops on the elite Hornet offense to stay in the game.

Stingers Up!

This is a Beau Baldwin team, so a lot of trickery, passing and wouldn't be surprised to see a fake punt/FG.
Again, it will come down to execution, turnovers and if Dunniway/O'Hara have a let down with accuracy/intensity.
Scat was limited, I'd expect him to get back to 100yds+ rushing. Fulcher is a badass too. Tau-Tolliver not to bad either.

Is Fulcher good to go? He was shaken up in the Colorado State game and I can't remember him returning.

He didn’t return, but looked to be fine walking around with smiles towards the end of the game. Maybe a precaution to keep him out when up 31… that said, our RB depth is solid.

That's good news, I didn't notice him on the sideline after he left. It could have been a just cramp and it was about in the third quarter, the game was under control at that point.

Fulcher looks fine to me, must have been cramps…

A little sluggish start -- allowed a fake punt with a WR back to punt. But up 7-0 on a Fulcher rumble after a 3rd down defensive holding call.

This camera angle is terrible.

Have to clean up the penalties. Other than that. We played pretty well. Now to shut down Dotson. Betting our guys are going to line up to do that.

I was on tilt when that play happened right out of the gate. Knowing Baldwin’s tactics, no way that should have been WIDE open like that let alone unexpected.

But beyond that, there wasn’t much to be upset about as a Hornets fan. Maybe the 2nd half pass defense and lack of pass rush. Everything else was pretty darn good.

As I always say, more Skattebo, less O’Hara rush attempts would be nice.

Hopefully that’s the route TT goes as the level of opponent get tougher.

49-21 Hornet win. A strong Hornet contingent made the trip, it’s always good to see Hornet support on the road. Hats off to the folks at the Alumni Association and the Athletics Department that set up the tailgate area right next to the stadium. It was a great way for traveling Hornet fans to congregate before the game.

Solid performance at every facet with some sloppiness here and there which wasn’t going to really matter against a team as bad as Cal Poly. Only knock was the penalties, but both CP and Hornet fans were on the refs all night for questionable calls both ways. Seemed like a lot of the flags came out late, fortunately it didn’t matter in this one.

Defense really stepped up early and set the tone for the game. Cal Poly could have really got some momentum going and put the Hornets on their heels early if they could have scored off of the fake punt on their initial drive. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, the Hornet defense stepped up and kept them off the scoreboard until late in the 3rd quarter. Open field tackling was on point once again and the secondary made some solid plays in clutch situations (10 pass breakups on the night, 3 by Prince Washington). Armon Bailey (8 tak, 1 TFL, 1 sac) continues to make his presence felt defending the run.

Offense started off slow but was essentially unstoppable once everyone got on the same page. The only thing that can stop this offense is themselves. Aside from one bad pass from Dunniway (16/22, 246 yds, 2 TD, 1 INT), the passing game was stellar as Asher O’Hara (7/11, 91 tds, 1 TD) had a very efficient night. Four Hornet receivers had at least 4 catches with Marshel Martin (5 rec, 90 yds) leading the way. Running attack had good balance from everyone, and the output would have been even bigger if not for a few big runs called back on penalties. Cameron Skattebo (11 car, 85 yds, 2 TD, 1 rer, 16 yds, 1 TD) had another good game.

Special teams was solid on kick coverage, but wasn’t ready for the fake punt. Sentkowski was perfect on PATs (7/7).

4-0 for the first time since 1982. Stingers Up!
