Series: EWU leads 1-0.
Last Meeting: EWU won 55-17 in Cheney in 2012.

The sixth-ranked Eastern Washington University football team heads to Grand Forks, N.D. for the first time in school history this Saturday (Oct. 12) when the Eagles play North Dakota in a Big Sky Conference game. Kickoff indoors in the 12,283-seat Alerus Center is 12:35 p.m. Pacific time in a game produced by the Midco Sports Network and televised live in the Eastern Washington region by SWX.

A year ago, in the first-ever meeting between the two schools, the Eagles handed the Big Sky newcomer a 55-17 pasting. The 38-point margin was Eastern’s best against a NCAA Football Championship Subdivision opponent in eight years, as the Eagles scored 34 first-half points en route to the rout.

But EWU head coach Beau Baldwin knows last year’s game was an anomaly in the Big Sky Conference. His team is currently 1-0 in the league and 3-2 overall after last week’s 41-19 home win over Weber State, and UND is now 1-1 in the Big Sky and 2-3 on the season after edging Idaho State 28-25.

“The conference is tough from top to bottom,” Baldwin said. “If you get yourself to 1-0 you are really in (a good position). It is a long haul anyway you look at it, but to get it to 1-0 is huge.”

North Dakota opened the year with a 59-point victory at home over Valparaiso (69-10), but also fell at home to a trio of nationally-ranked FCS opponents – South Dakota State (35-28), Montana (55-17) and Montana State (63-20).

“They only have one less victory than us,” said Baldwin, who made the trip to Grand Forks previously as a coach at Central Washington. “At this point in the season, we are all just battling in the Big Sky Conference. We are all still in the hunt for the Big Sky title and they are right there in that hunt as well. They’ve lost to some really good football teams and they play better at home. There is a sense of pride in that dome and it’s a special arena. It’s not an easy place to go play.”

Don't short yourself with the 45 points...unless you take your foot off of the gas pedal. You can probably put 60 on them the way ND's "D" is playing right now. Speaking of "D" how are guys looking this year? Injuries...Experience...Improving? Who are your studs??

Our D has a lot of room for improvement. They've looked stellar against inferior opponents (WSU, WOU), but have been torched by OSU, SHSU, and to a less extent, Toledo. No major injuries other than S Tonani before the season, but that's more than mitigated by picking up S Tevin McDonald. McD, LB Ronnie Hamlin, and CB TJ Lee have been living up to their billing. rFr LB Miquiyah Zamora and Fr LB Albert Havilli have shown they're going to be major players for us for years to come.

The D is looking really soft so far in the year.

We struggle with offenses like the Griz but we torch defenses like the Griz, that game will be a shootout.

We are really young at the skill position, but filled with talent. Our offense is going continue to light up the scoreboard for years to come.

Our defense should be better than they have been, we have NFL talent in the secondary, an all american LB, and a big D line. We struggled against Toledo and SHSU, but they run that damn spread option that gives us fits. OSU threw all over us, but they are doing that to every FBS team too so who knows...

Taking into consideration who we have played, I'd say the defense is average at this point in the season. I do think they have under performed relative to all the talent that is there, though. I expect they will improve as the season progresses, lots of young talent there.

This.

Speaking of Tevin McDonald...what's his game like?? I know about his pedigree and why he was available last year to transfer. How do you guys see his game and does he look like a guy that plays on Sundays??

He's a ball hawk in the sense that he's really good at reading the play and getting to the ball. I'd say he could use some work on his tackling... seems inconsistent. I'm surprised he hasn't caused any turnovers yet. I don't think he's NFL ready after this year, but if he stays, gets fully acclimated and puts it all together, yeah he could definitely play on Sundays.

Listening to the pregame, I really think this game boils down to running the football, and stopping Hardin. We do those two things, we win.
