7 on 7

I heard from a player that we beat both Idaho and Washington State yesterday in 7 on 7 in Pullman. :D

Here is a quote from Kevin Kooyman, WSU DE, writing on the 7 on 7 at WSU with EWU and Idaho for Cougfan.com:
"We had a great day against both teams. Our offense drove down and scored routinely and on numerous occasions. Our defense stepped up and had quite a few goal line stands."
He didn't report any scores??

Actually, WSU and EWU pretty much split. There was no real winner. And beating WSU is nothing to brag about - until we see marked improvement from them on the field. So this isn't a HUGE feat. Might be huge for BLM, considering his last showing against WSU, but definitely was nothing to write home about.

So YOU don't think beating WSU and Idaho was huge. It clearly was not a split. 7 on 7 is a good indicator of the kind of skill players you have. From everyone I talked to who was there, Bo and the boys did great.

No, I don't think it was HUGE. 7 on 7 is a great way for the guys to run plays, get some competition but in NO WAY does it indicate how good skill players really are. Half of the best players don't even participate other than against their own team during the week, to lessen the chance of injury. We find out who the best skill players are on the field, live game situation. Bo, nor any of the other QB's don't have lineman gunning for them in 7 on 7. No pressure - means less mistakes. Thank god.

WSU beat EWU last year in the same 7 on 7 - but EWU likely would have beaten WSU in an actual game. Matt Nichols is the best QB to have come out of EWU and he couldn't beat WSU in 7 on 7. So you're telling me that because we won (and several of your players say it was more of a split) that we should think this season is a lock? 7 on 7 means nothing in the grand scheme of things. All that matters is what happens on the field beginning on September 2nd in Nevada. And the two games after that are pretty key too.

Easy there Rock the Red! I don't think anyone is saying that we are a lock becuase of a successful 7-on-7 against WSU and UI. We do have every right to be excited though about the possibilities of the upcoming season. The fact is we do have great skill guys and have better skill guys then both of those teams. Taiwan Jones didn't even make the trip on Sunday and we still represented. Last year CWU beat everyone and look at the year that they had so yes it is only 7-on-7 but we are in fact going to be pretty good. I can't wait for the season and the new red turf. Go Eagles!!!

Eagle1 - We had better skill players than those teams LAST YEAR too. 7 on 7 means nothing. It's great for all the kids, representing all the teams to get out there and get some reps. EWU probably won't even compete against Nevada and Central can't be overlooked. Hell, they're really good. I think what you need to keep in mind is that it takes a TEAM to win a game. Not one QB, not one RB, not one DB, not three linemen.

? about Central - wonder why they didn't make the trip this year. Might have been smart play by them.

Glad we were competetive.. no matter who was in attendence. Much better than we got owned..no matter who was in attendence.

We'll just let time be the JUDGE on those quotes ! Thats why you play the game ! GO EAGS !!!

7 on 7 is more important than you think. It gives the skill guys a chance to go at it against their counterparts. It has nothing to do with the regular season and no one is suggesting that. Just curious though, what makes you think EWU would not have beaten Wash. State last year?

Wineguy:

I said EWU WOULD have LIKELY beaten WSU in a game. They did not, however - beat WSU in the 7 on 7 last July. Which is why I stated that 7 on 7 means nothing where talent is concerned. Good for the guys still learning the playbook though.

And flyingnail - if you think that one person wins the game, you are delusional. Period. And sadly, if the person you're cheering on has that same attitude, and is not truly there for the TEAM, but instead for personal gain (NFL) then he's in it for the wrong reasons. If that follows, then great - but he should be playing for the here and now.

Brett Favre on the ESPY's tonight:

"In high school, I threw very few passes. That's because my coach believed that our team was a better running team. And he was right. Well that coach was my dad. His leadership helped us win many football games, and he taught me that the TEAM came first. He taught me to be tough, unselfish and most important, to look at your teammates as family."

We NEED everyone on the EWU football team, to buy into that very idea. Because NO ONE on this team is good enough to win the games by themselves. We are likely going to be a running team this year and many need to buy into THAT as well. If they can, and can be unselfish, great things can happen. Sadly, you can't take the "selfish" out of an entire roster of players.

Dnt know whats in your koolaid dude, but there is NO I in TEAM !!! The only way to win IS as a team ! example Echiro = Mariners !! This group of guys WILL excite, build it and they will come !! GO EAGS !!

I think you all are in violent agreement with regards to this being a team sport.

From the very beginning RockTheRed has had a unique perspective on BLM. I'm not close enough to the team to dispute that perspective, but from what I saw of BLM at the spring scrimages, he looked very good and I feel confident in him leading the team in the fall.

As for last summer, at least at one of the EWU WSU 7-on-7 games EWU put the ball in the end zone more times than WSU did. No one formally keeps score at these things, but from all accounts the teams are well matched and they are very competitive. It is also true that they do not include the full complement of players at each outing.
