I'll bet a box of Washington apples against 1 gallon of Maine maple syrup the Eagles win on Saturday.

Hey there claw,

a gallon is a LOT of maple syrup. Also not cheap...$60 range. How much is a box of washington apples?

Depends on the species... The top-tier Honeycrisps can go close to $10/lb. The regular commercial variety are usually about $4/lb. Cripps Pink and Pacific Rose can also get close to $5+/lb depending on quality. Pacific Rose is rare in Washington, though, as it is primarily grown in Australia and New Zealand.

The more common species- Red Delicious, Gala, etc- usually come in at $1/lb or less.

Hello maine612,
Are you coming to Spokane? If so come to our tailgate in P12 south P25 (upper level just outside of the entrance). I am looking forward to a great game. The NCAA likes to match up teams geographically in the initial rounds to cut down on travel costs, how wrong did they get this. There can't be many teams further apart than us!
When I read your post my first thought was you must plan on losing, or why would you be concerned that 1 gallon is too much for me and how much it could cost you.
What am I missing?

It’s the latter. Plus, I eat a lot of apples. I’m a veritable warehouse of useless information.

Cosmic Crisp is the next greatest apple. In the next ten years Washington growers exclusively will have planted 7 million Cosmic Crisp trees.

My wife and I have a recurring fight about red delicious. She thinks they are great, I think they're dirt.

I’m all about the Honeycrisp. But, it looks like Wazzu, the importers of cheatgrass as a “great” early range land forage, may have got it right this time with the Cosmic Crisp.

One apple I have really enjoyed is the Pacific Rose. I found some at a store once, bought half a dozen to try and loved them. However, I haven't seen them since.

As our apple connoisseur LDopaPDX stated they are more grow in Australia and New Zeland and rare in Washington so that might be your problem

Oh, completely glossed over that part of the oost. That explains it. I always thought they were a Pacific Northwest apple because of the name.

Hey Clawman,

Unfortunately I will not be coming to Spokane. A cacophony of issues/challenges have presented themselves this week. To say I am bummed is an understatement. Thanks for the invitation!

People in these parts hate Red Delicious apples.

The most popular varieties fresh from Maine orchards are McIntosh, Cortland, and Honey Crisp.

Unfortunately we are at the mercy of what the stores are carrying most of the year....Gala, Delicious, etc varieties from your neck of the woods.
