After the end of conference play, let's all recap and remember:
Start of the season:
1. Weber was picked #1 pre-season by the coach's poll and media, primarily because of the talents of Damian Lillard.
2. Damian goes down with a season ending injury; immediately Weber is expected to crumble and have no success in conference.
3. Scott Bamforth dislocates his shoulder and is expected to have limited availability.
4. Hughey sprains his ankle and is hobbled.
5. The Cats are viewed to have limited chance for success; Kenpom blog "guesstimates" an 8-8 conference record.
Then what happened?
a. Weber goes 11-5 in conference, making 3rd seed.
b. Weber came within 6 points of beating BYU.
c. The players and coaches find ways to win, come through adversity and new leaders stepped up.
d. The fans came out and saw the games averaging over 6,000 for each home game ( thanks catcat)
e. Still can't forget the last second shot to beat UNC!
This team was fun to watch during the season. Yes, there were some lapses, but that occurs for all teams. I look back at the play of the starters, fighting off ankle, shoulder, calf and other injuries, to get things done. I look at the players off the bench coming in to contribute where they can, many either red-shirt or true freshmen, and very young and making a difference. And, I see the coaches never giving up on the team or the kids.
So, the end of my long post. We start the first game of the tourney on Saturday. And it will be a test to see if we can knock these same Eagles out of the Dee. Whatever happens, we fans have had a memorable season, and more to come, and we need to keep cheering for these Cats!
