A New Star in the Making?

In the midst of all this angst over results (and, yes, we SHOULD be complaining about it), I think we're losing something very important for the future that's happening right before our very eyes (then again, I'm absolutely CERTAIN SD has noticed this, too).

Probably because I'm a short quarterback (or, perhaps more accurately, a short WANNA-BE quarterback), I've always been fond of the old adage "Always hit the Y." In other words, throw to the tight end frequently because he offers a large target and is generally on short routes, making for easy throws because he can shield the ball from the DBs with his body. Many teams use the TE as nothing more than an auxiliary tackle, and that's a shame. I believe that outstanding passing games are built with TE passes as a pillar. (I like the old school pop pass, but you clearly don't have to use that.)

Right before our eyes, we're seeing the development of an outstanding tight end with a nose for the end zone. I just had a look at most of the previous box scores, and one thing I'm seeing in just about every game is at least one TD scored by Cole Hikutini, a RS freshman TE out of Elk Grove-Pleasant Grove, a Sac-Joaquin Section and NorCal regional power. He nabbed the game winner today, and has scored in nearly every win and in a few of our losses as well. Hikutini isn't making many headlines because he doesn't get the gaudy yardage that, say, Morris Norisse makes, but when he makes a catch, Hikutini seems to have a knack for making it count.

Look out for Cole Hikutini in years to come if the quarterbacks who succeed Safron (and the OCs who instruct them) have anything of an interest in the pass to the Y. This guy looks like a keeper!
