A perspective of how thin we are at defensive line

We currently have a true freshman who has been in the rotation for every game this season. He is 6-4 and only 210 pounds. Vernon Adams is only 10 pounds lighter than him.

I knew we were thin at defensive line, but I didn't know it was this bad. You can't create push with such a tall and lanky kid. He has played sparingly, but has played in every game. If we sustain more injuries to the defensive line, we could be looking at this kid as a starter.

Thoughts?

My thought is this is why you can never recruit too many D-linemen. You can always make a big kid who's feet aren't right an OL. I'd say it is the one place on the field where too many is never enough.

For real. I think we should look consider beginning the process of converting Jerrod Jones to a defensive lineman. He didn't even play offensive line in high school, but was converted due to his nice wingspan and push. Jerrod only played one year of high school ball, but wrecked offensive lineman so bad at nose tackle that he got our attention.

Edit: Looking through the depth chart, maybe not. He is the only backup at left tackle.

Our dline will be just fine. That kid from North Central High School might be a featherweight but he's got a big motor :o . He got to Miles a few times a couple weeks ago and I think he got more pressure on him than anyone else against the best oline we'll see all year. DZ and MS are studs in the middle and as good as any in our conference.

Finally some optimism!!!
I can't wait to see the egg on the face of negative Neds after the Eagles hold the Cats to two TD and two FG, 20 points... or less.

I have also noticed Marcus Saugen several times this year. He just has that look of agile defensive end. He is fast coming off the edge and looks to have good technique.

Saugen's looked pretty good in pash rush for a True Freshman. I agree, though, he probably needs to be playing at around 225-230.

Can't wait to see them shred MSU.

Good dlinemen are extremely hard to find at any level...even for FBS teams...more so at FCS level. Probably the hardest position to secure is good NT's.

Trial by fire

Several young Eastern defensive linemen – five of them – grew up in a hurry on Saturday.

Confronted by injuries and the big-picture necessity of maintaining depth, Eagle coaches moved a pair of true freshmen to the defensive line for Montana State.

Tight end/fullback Conner Bauman was transformed into an end, while 315-pound offensive lineman Jay-Tee Tiuli moved into the middle on the other side of the ball.

They joined three other true freshmen already seeing action – Nick Foerstel, Patiole Pesefea and North Central product Marcus Saugen.

“We did that because we’re thinking big picture,” said defensive line coach Ryan Sawyer, who wants to maintain a 10-man rotation all season.

“We didn’t want to go through with only seven guys,” said Sawyer, who was missing ends Evan Day (ACL) and John Goldwire (concussion).

And Pulu did not play either. Given the injuries and the d-line operating as a mash unit I think the defense did a great job as a whole.

I really hope Pulu can get back to being healthy and get on the field. Seems like he's had a lot of bad luck with being injured as I don't remember him playing much last season either.
