Air Force 2009

That is a great strategy for the bears. A great way to fill the coffers, close so a good number of alumni will show up and assuming Air Force doesn't dramatically change their offense a game that could be reasonably close.

I agree but you're being way too optimistic. The opinion police are going to have to come in shortly and set you straight. :x

Not too optimistic. The games are a couple of years out and Air Force is the type of team that can give Tennessee trouble because of the wishbone but also the type of team that doesn't lay a lot of points on anyone - that's just not the style of their offense. Arguably they are not able to get athletes that are that much better than what UNC can get with their admissions standards and the limited number of great athletes that want to serve in the Air Force. All that being said, I'm not expecting any victories, just some respecatable games (w/in 2 or 3 scores would seem doable to me). We certainly won't have to listed to everyone say how they will hang a 100 on us like we are hearing about the UH game :D

Yeah I just meant that it seems like anytime someone shows any optimism about the program, even if it's just about getting that guaranteed check, it's fashionable for others to feel the need to come in and "set them straight" with their version of reality.

I like what the new Air Force coach said. There is a lot of respect coming from that man.

"You look at Northern Colorado, they have a great tradition there," Calhoun said. "They are fortunate now to have a fine coach in Scott Downing. He is a guy with great vision, great energy and is just a great human being."

While the games with Air Force are great news!

But the article just makes the UNC athletic dpt look amature. The athletic director wont return phone calls and all they get from media relations is basically 'no comment' not to mention that Downing didnt even know something was in the works. Compare this to Air Force, where both the head coach and the athletic director where willing to chat and said some very positive things.

The athletic departement has become a black hole for information. How do they expect fans to get excited about UNC when the only things that ever come out of there is either a 'no comment' to a reporter or a half assed press release on the website. For example last year they publised several updates durring spring ball and a spring preview. This year we get a two paragraph press release. Not to mention the fact that if you do not make it out to Greeley often, you would have no idea about the upgrades to nottingham.

I was hoping having a SID in place would help matters, but it sure dosent seem to....

PS we also got dissed by the department. They had a link to the old board, and I emailed them requesting that they update it, and they just took it down. :x

They sure don't seem to get it over there. THey need fans in the seats, but they sure don't seem to have a clue to attract them. Near as I can tell the plan is:
1. Put a lousy product on the field.
2. Gut the fundraising arm.
3. Hope that all the bad press just goes away.
4. Sit in a glass tower and communicate nothing to anyone.
Hell even the Marketing 101 class can help this group out.

This is a team anyone could upset this year. Give me a break a spread offense run by option players, AFA will struggle this year.

It is disapointing how little information ever comes out of the athletic department. I keep thinking they must be working on something big over there, but alas, of course they aren't. I can accept perhaps a little vacation time during the summer but they better hit the ground running come August or I'll not have any interest in coming up and supporting the team... why bother, if they can't be arsed to promote the team and act like they care.

Just chalk it up to the norm on official websites. I can't think of a fans' message board that is linked to from anyone's site, but I could be wrong ;) I haven't been to EVERY official site in D-I, but I can't recall of seeing such a link elsewhere.

While commenting about the way the AFA stuff played out this week, keep in mind that the Hawaii contract info was handled the same way--nothing released until it was made official. Don't blame the SID for this, as she's just doing as she's asked to. There is a policy of not commenting until something is lock solid--period.

As to the article, it was another strong indicator of the chasm between the UNC Athletic Department and the Greeley Tribune. The Trib wants to run with everything immediately, while the department policy is to get everything lined up before making any announcements. Never the twain shall meet.

I'm not defending or lauding here--I'm just pointing out the items I've observed...

I am in with some folks at the AFA athletic department and they blame UNC for this not shaping up for sure. I think that is unfortunate, we need them much more than they need us and we need to nail this thing down ASAP. Hopfully next year it will be done.
