Alaska: Weber St vs Arizona State, Semifinal

This team needs to get in the gym and shoot until the nets burn. The bigs need to learn how to either make a lay-up or grow a pair and slam it down hard. This is a heartbreaker. In the grand scheme it doesn't matter, but hurts to be the underdog all of the time.

I think I saw Hughey walking around. Did you hear something in the postgame.
rahe said maybe sprain or tear but they do not know what it is yet but he wont play tomorrow for sure. not good

Losing sucks, but I am very pleased with how they competed! They went toe to toe with a team that was 2nd in the PAC 10 and that has NBA talent. I am excited for the regular season - these guys will be great. I loved the team ball tonight.

Weber State played tough tonight. Hard loss to take but to put things in perspective - the Wildcats just took last year's second place team in the Pac-10 down to the wire with, not aguably, your best player of the day (Hughey) injured, Lillard having an off game and your bigs underperforming. No shame in that. Frustration - maybe. Beat Drake (right?) tomorrow and come home with a 3rd place finish.

This is the kind of game that an inexperienced team loses. But it is important to play in these types of games. I'm guessing that a lot was learned -- which will help us as the season goes on. Hard to believe we were in that game when our star player went, what, 2-15 (my guess, don't know for sure). I would hope they would recover and play hard today as 2-1 would be a good tournament.

I like this team, alot. As they mature they are going to get really, really good.

Our youth is showing this year, however our youth is also showing how good they can be.

We played well last night, against a quality opponent, and last night told me how different the games vs USU and Utah would have been if they would have been fair, Arizona State is a good team and we took them to the wire, thats a good sign.

I know Lillard is our main man, and we al know he is probably the most talented player on our roster, but yesterday he was stone cold, I think Rahe should have given the ball at the end to Scott Bamforth, Scotty B was doing a little better from the 3, Lillard obviously not so much, however Im sure Lillard will bounce back, I believe we play Ball State tonight, And I also believe that Lillard will be a monster tonight, and we need him to be now with Hughey out.

Tough loss!! Wow, I thought some sleep would help the hurt, but it hasn't. Weber should have won last night. YIKES!!

Anyway, I agree with you Wildcat. Weber lost three starters from last years team. The current Cats, are playing two true Fresh a lot, a redshirt Fresh, and a new sophomore. It's going to take some time for the Cats to Gel. Granted, I expected a lot from this team. Maybe too much but I think this team is going to end up being really good. Yes, I would definitely like to see some more W's against "Big" named schools and instates. Its getting frustrating losing to them.

Catcat I know Carla Taylor gives you a boner, but come on dude.

CATCAT You pop wood over Carla??

I'm sure she is flattered, but I don't think you'll get to far.

Weber State went to the wire with Arizona State despite going cold in the Great Alaska Shootout semifinal, but the Sun Devils stayed with the hot hand.

ASU guard Trent Lockett, who scored a game-high 24 points, burned the Wildcats for the go-ahead basket with 8 seconds to go.

Lockett was fouled on the play and missed from the free throw line, but Damian Lillard missed a long 3 on the other end and Arizona State came away with the ricochet as time ran out on its 59-58 win over Weber State. The Wildcats (2-3) shot just 34 percent from the field but hung with the Sun Devils (3-1), who finished second in the Pac-10 a year ago, despite a second consecutive off night by their best player at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska.

“I’m really proud of how (the Weber State players) fought and hung together,” WSU coach Randy Rahe said in a postgame radio interview. “They just kept battling. I thought we showed a lot of grit and a lot of toughness. We put ourselves in a position to win the game and they just made one more play.”

Lillard, the reigning Big Sky MVP, came into the Great Alaska Shootout averaging 27 points per game, but he didn’t score his first basket from the field Friday until just over five minutes remaining and was just 2-of-17 from the floor, missing all eight of his 3-point attempts.

The junior guard didn’t let that bother him at the free throw line, however, hitting critical free throws down the stretch. Lillard was 8-of-8 from the stripe to finish with 12 points and five assists, but his last shot was off the mark.

“I know Damian feels awful about that last play, but we’re not in that position if he doesn’t get to the line eight times and give us a chance. The ball’s going to go in his hands. He’s deserved it, he’s earned it and he works too hard. He’s a damn good player. Every game we have, if it comes down to it, I trust him,” Rahe said. “I thought (the last shot) was in when it left his hand. I’m going to live and die with that kid as long as he’s at Weber State.”

Sophomore transfer guard Scott Bamforth provided an offensive lift off the bench again with a team-high 15 points for the Wildcats, hitting 3-of-7 from deep.

Senior guard Lindsey Hughey had 13 points but wasn’t on the court at the end of the game after an apparent ankle injury in the second half.

Rahe said he didn’t know the details of Hughey’s injury, but there was little chance he would return in time for Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. consolation contest with Drake.

Weber State couldn’t lock down Lockett all night, as he hit 9-of-12 from the field for Arizona State.

Jamelle McMillan added 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Senior forward Rihards Kuksiks, of Latvia, also hit three 3s and had 11 points for the Sun Devils.

Arizona State, coached by Herb Sendek, will face St. John’s in the 33rd annual Great Alaska Shootout championship.

St. John’s shut down Drake in an 82-39 blowout earlier Friday night.

The Bulldogs advanced to the tournament semifinal with a 78-59 win over Southern Utah on Wednesday before being blown away by the Red Storm. Drake’s 39 points against St. John’s set a tournament-record for fewest points in a game.
