Weber State went to the wire with Arizona State despite going cold in the Great Alaska Shootout semifinal, but the Sun Devils stayed with the hot hand.
ASU guard Trent Lockett, who scored a game-high 24 points, burned the Wildcats for the go-ahead basket with 8 seconds to go.
Lockett was fouled on the play and missed from the free throw line, but Damian Lillard missed a long 3 on the other end and Arizona State came away with the ricochet as time ran out on its 59-58 win over Weber State. The Wildcats (2-3) shot just 34 percent from the field but hung with the Sun Devils (3-1), who finished second in the Pac-10 a year ago, despite a second consecutive off night by their best player at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska.
“I’m really proud of how (the Weber State players) fought and hung together,” WSU coach Randy Rahe said in a postgame radio interview. “They just kept battling. I thought we showed a lot of grit and a lot of toughness. We put ourselves in a position to win the game and they just made one more play.”
Lillard, the reigning Big Sky MVP, came into the Great Alaska Shootout averaging 27 points per game, but he didn’t score his first basket from the field Friday until just over five minutes remaining and was just 2-of-17 from the floor, missing all eight of his 3-point attempts.
The junior guard didn’t let that bother him at the free throw line, however, hitting critical free throws down the stretch. Lillard was 8-of-8 from the stripe to finish with 12 points and five assists, but his last shot was off the mark.
“I know Damian feels awful about that last play, but we’re not in that position if he doesn’t get to the line eight times and give us a chance. The ball’s going to go in his hands. He’s deserved it, he’s earned it and he works too hard. He’s a damn good player. Every game we have, if it comes down to it, I trust him,” Rahe said. “I thought (the last shot) was in when it left his hand. I’m going to live and die with that kid as long as he’s at Weber State.”
Sophomore transfer guard Scott Bamforth provided an offensive lift off the bench again with a team-high 15 points for the Wildcats, hitting 3-of-7 from deep.
Senior guard Lindsey Hughey had 13 points but wasn’t on the court at the end of the game after an apparent ankle injury in the second half.
Rahe said he didn’t know the details of Hughey’s injury, but there was little chance he would return in time for Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. consolation contest with Drake.
Weber State couldn’t lock down Lockett all night, as he hit 9-of-12 from the field for Arizona State.
Jamelle McMillan added 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Senior forward Rihards Kuksiks, of Latvia, also hit three 3s and had 11 points for the Sun Devils.
Arizona State, coached by Herb Sendek, will face St. John’s in the 33rd annual Great Alaska Shootout championship.
St. John’s shut down Drake in an 82-39 blowout earlier Friday night.
The Bulldogs advanced to the tournament semifinal with a 78-59 win over Southern Utah on Wednesday before being blown away by the Red Storm. Drake’s 39 points against St. John’s set a tournament-record for fewest points in a game.
