The CFL has named Hornet QB Ricky Ray (Toronto Argonauts) the Eastern Division Jeff Russel Most Outstanding Player for the second year in a row. As such, Ray is a finalist for the League's Player of the Year Award. Ray led the CFL with 4,595 yards passing, 28 passing TDs, 425 completions, and .685 completion percentage. Twice, Ray was POW. Obviously, he was also named to the Eastern Division All-Division Team.

Brandon Smith (Calgary Stampeders) was named to the Western Division All-Division Team as a defensive halfback. He led Calgary and was third in the CFL with 85 tackles. He picked off two passes, forced three fumbles, broke up a pass, and nailed three runners in the backfield. With Smith's help, Calgary finished 15-3 to earn the top seed in the Western Division playoffs. The Stampeders host the Edmonton Eskimos Sun 23 NOV in the Western Final.

NFL rookie LBer Todd Davis was released by the New Orleans Saints after shifting between the active roster and the taxi squad all season. The Saints were apparently hoping to sign Davis to the taxi squad again, but those hopes were dashed when Davis signed with the Denver Broncos last Friday. Davis was inactive last week while Denver lost to the St. Louis Rams, but they might activate him in time for Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins.

Speaking of the Broncos-Dolphins game, there is the potential that Dolphins taxi squad QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson could be on the sideline.

One last bit of Hornet Alumni news. American River College Acting Head Coach Jon Osterhout has been named NorCal Conference Co-Coach of the Year as his 9-1 Beavers (#2 in NorCal) are slated to face #4 Butte College (7-4) in the Gridiron Classic Bowl this Saturday in the first round of the NorCal Football Championship. (I don't have a usable link, as the Auburn Journal article announcing this has been redacted for people who haven't paid for an online subscription. Ugh!) ARC is likely to face #1 CCSF [also 9-1 and playing #8 Chabot College (6-4) in the SFCC Bowl]. On the SoCal side of the bracket are #1 Riverside City College (9-1) vs. #8 Ventura College (6-4) in the National Bowl and #2 Mt. San Antonio College (8-2) vs. #4 Fullerton College (8-2) in the Southern CA Bowl. Winners play again 29 NOV for the chance to face the winning squad from the other half of the state for the State Championship (at the SoCal Champion's home field this year) 13 DEC.

#2 American River College (10-1) beat #4 Butte College (7-4) 20-17 in the Gridiron Classic today to move on to the NorCal JC Final against #1 City College of San Francisco (10-1) next weekend. CCSF beat #8 Chabot College (6-5) 47-20 in the SFCC Bowl. Half of the SoCal Final is set with #2 Mt. San Antonio College's (9-2) 44-14 win over #4 Fullerton College in the Soutehrn CA Bowl today. Just waiting on the Riverside-Ventura game to complete the SoCal Final/State Semifinals. WTG, Jonny O!

The Calgary Stampeders qualified for the 102nd Grey Cup with a 43-18 win over the Edmonton Eskimos in the Western Final. They will face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who beat the Montreal Alouettes 40-24 in the Eastern Final. Defensive halfback Brandon Carter (Sac State) is among two Big Sky alumni leading the way for Calgary.
