I'm new to there boards, and i figure an introduction, and an anecdote, might be in order.
I'm a sacramento native (fourth generation), and the child of two hornets. Growing up in east sac, i have been subjected to my fathers support to his alma mater. That meant lots of days of watching the hornets, an inane hate for the Aggies, and utter despair after many a close lose and many a blowout.
So this weekend, when i walked outside at our cabin to inform my dad that Sac State actually held a 14-3 lead over Oregon State at half, he simply said 'dont lie to me like that'. Last year, i erroneously informed him that Sac State beat Stanford, when in fact, South Carolina State was beating Sanford. Oops. It took the support of my uncle, also a hornet, who had seen the ESPN ticker with his own two eyes, to convince my dad that we were not lying, but in fact, telling the truth. I almost didn't want to tell him. I knew it would break his heart when Sac State ended up losing 52-14. We kept checking the score and we couldn't believe our eyes. When finally it flashed on the screen 29-28, i thought he was going to have a heart attack. You can imagine the remarks he made to my three friends who had accompanied me to the cabin, all three of whom are incoming freshman at OSU. Even thought they go to Oregon State, they were a little happy to see their hometown team get a win. "If we had to lose to any 1-AA team, i'm glad it was them".
As a student at Santa Clara, I didn't really have a dog in the fight. But why not? I love college football, but have never been able to pick one team to root for. My great grandfather played at Cal. That was too intangible to make me a fan. Now the school I attend, Santa Clara, is a victim of several unfortunate NCAA rulings which keep us off the field. We may be back one day, but until then, I think the Hornets will get my attention and rooting interest. That used to be hard, but i hope that things go the way of the SUU game, and get put on TV here at home. There is such a huge alumni base here, and a deal with comcast bay area or something to get at least a handful of games on TV would do wonders for the program. I feel that there are tons of people who would love to get excited about this program, and I can already see it happening. The region would love to support a winning team. With the emergence of Sacramento region high school football, i see no reason why this team can't have all the support it needs, as far as fans and recruits go. As a classmate of the Sperbeck son at Jesuit, I've heard all the gibes about the program. I think those days can be behind this school. I hope so. I'll be watching closely. Good luck.
