I was hoping Eastern would get drawn into Sam Houston's group. Had we been the 8 seed, we'd have matched up with them. I always had an "the Emporer has no clothes" impression of them. They were undefeated but their seed was mostly based on being the defending champ. If you look at their body of work this season, they've been beating sub-par teams rather unimpressively.
However, there is ZERO chance Eastern would've held them to just 19 points. We could've outscored them, but they'd have been far more effective offensively against us. One thing that is obvious among the four teams left, all are structured around their defense. JMU held Montana to just 6 points (and we gave up *FIFTY SEVEN* the week before!), NDSU held ETSU to 3, South Dakota State gave up the most with 21 in their win, and Montana State held Sam Houston State to 19. In modern football, you struggle to win by outscoring teams. That may have been a viable model 5 years ago, but defense still wins championships. It's no different at the FBS level either, where all of the final four teams are shutting offenses down.
