Andersen gone at USU

With Gary Andersen reportedly gone in Logan, is Jay Hill going to be pursued? I wouldn’t jump to a program that cans a coach 3 games into his second season.

I hadn't seen that. Where did you hear that?

Report: Utah State parting ways with Gary Andersen

I think they may go after Sac State's guy, or maybe Cal Polly's coach. Quite frankly, it has become a place where coaches go and are never seen again. Let's face it, it isn't easy to recruit to Logan. This is not unlike UI's situation. You have to recruit against the BSUs of the world and you don't have the resources to do it.

I hope Hill stays but I am really worried because Bovee is at Utah State and he really likes Jay Hill. This is 2020 anything can happen

Jay Hill has said that he didnt schedule a series against James Madison just to leave before it even happens. If he still believes that then he is safe here for at least another 2 years

After the Morgan Scalley SNAFU last year, Jay should be the top guy in line after Whitt decides to leave at the U. Scalley will still stay, and they would get Jay. Win/win for Utah. Continuing to win and build a beast of a program here in Ogden, will only solidify his future spot as the HC in Salt Lake. However, winning in Logan would definitely secure that too, and you do get paid more. BUT...USU is a little up in the night with its expectations right now. And, evidently there are some serious issues happening if Gary is being asked to leave now (what a weird time to fire a coach...three games into a season that actually doesn't even count. I wonder what boneheaded thing Gary might have done to get canned). Wells didn't leave much in the cupboard for Gary (he had a good season too) and expecting wins this fall when each week you really don't know who is available or not is pretty crap. USU is rebuilding this year and the Mountain West was going to be really competitive at the top.

Oh well...no matter, this isn't looking good for our fortunes. We might need to start thinking about who takes over the reigns after Jay leaves. One thing that I am pretty certain about is that Jay will not want, what he has built, to slide. He will leave the right way and help pick his successor and ensure his legacy is continued. He has earned that right. He won't leave like gutless Bovee. Maybe knowing Bovee is up in Logan could be enough to convince Jay that USU isn't the best place to go. We can only hope.

Funny thought...why not go after Scalley, IF Jay were to leave? hahahaha Everyone deserves redemption at some point. Weber could be his.

All you need to know about the USU job is to look at what has happened to past coaches for the Aggies. You can be a good coach and be fired or you can be a good coach and leave of your own volition. Either way, you will be leaving within a few short years. The Aggies have a fairly good history in athletics, but it is always a struggle. Like I said, Logan is not an ideal place to recruit to. The campus is okay and the facilities are nice, but it is still Logan. You bring in a recruit in December or January and they are not wanting to come back any time soon.

USU wants to compete with the big boys, but has the infrastructure to compete with the low mid majors or they could compete with the upper crust of the FCS. USU is not unlike UI, with the exception that they got a last minute reprieve from the MWC. For the foreseeable future, USU will be relegated to the lower half of the MWC. They fit in real well with UW and and CSU. That is their ceiling, whether they like it or not. :coffee:

I don’t think Coach Hill will leave for the open position at USU. the timing is not right, leaving right now would be like leaving after spring ball any other season. There is no way new coaching staff could be in place before our season started. USU is not going to fill it’s open position until after their season is over and our season would start 8 weeks later. Jay would not do that to this program unlike another coach in Weber State’s recent history.

Hill applied for this job https://kslsports.com/448088/jeff-grimes-jay-hill-among-candidates-interviewed-for-utah-state-coaching-vacancy/

Man, I hope you are right. The players could be the ones who convince him to stay. BUT, if the job is offered, it is going to be really hard to turn down. Just in case, I hope Timmy has a short list ready to go. He needs someone cut from the same mold as Jay.

Looks like Jay was #3 and that USU is going to hire Arkansas State's HC.

Well, he does look like a decent hire but, I just don't understand the Aggies. Two chances to take Hill and they pass both times. It makes no sense it's as if they can't see what is going on just 50 miles south of them. I guess I should be grateful though since we get to keep Jay but, the thought process up there isn't always the brightest.

You have to think like an Aggie. They have hired guys with Utah ties over the past several years and have had mixed results. They don't have a lot of patience for losing or building. They think that their standing in the football world is much higher than it actually is. In that respect, they are much like UI and NMSU. They have great facilities and a nice campus, but they are still in Logan. Yes they have a good history, but that only counts in the classroom. They were absolutely not going to hire anybody with Utah ties. They think that their competition is Georgia, Florida, Ohio State and the like. They don't like to be reminded of reality. :coffee:

Well, I guess Jay was lucky to not get this one. What a mess it is up in Logan.

Wow...just wow!! I have absolutely no angst against USU. After the Cats, I always like seeing them succeed and do well. BUT this just shocks me. It takes a lot for players to boycott a game. Truly it is the only form of power they have to get someone to notice the issues. I don't see where Hartwell was involved in the statements. He was merely at the meeting and informing the president about options and directions and this has zero to do with the new coach, but what a dumpster fire he is treading into. Can't turn back now to faaaarrr down the rabbit hole. However Cocket has some serious explaining to do. If the meeting was recorded and deleted then we know that what was said, was said. If not, she needs to provide proof that what was said was totally taken out of context. If she said what the players claim she said, then she will probably be losing her position.

Well...not is the time for Jay to take advantage and steal some recruits and maybe get a couple transfers.

It's too bad that this years class of recruits will be so small, due to the pandemic eligibility. One thing their new coach will have is the room to bring in a lot of his own recruits. USU will likely be young for a few years. :coffee:
