Annual Starting 5 Debate

I'm not even gonna begin to personally assess this years team, chemistry, or their future until at least seeing the results Friday. Nothing too exciting jumped out of the exhibition game. Hill looked good off the bench but SV was totally outmatched is every way and Weber didn't look as dominating as I would expect for a high level team but they are probably a decent mid-major team-- time will tell. I think the post players will come along nicely, especially when they compete against normal sized post players. Richardson started off nicely but I think the back court has a ways to go, but there's plenty of time 'till Reno.

It was good to see Joel and Braxton on the floor as starters and hopefully put an end to the nonsense that's been Joel & Hill's position and spacing. I like who started, who came off the bench, and who are likely RS candidates. Maybe one exception is that I wish Gittens was able to start over Baker and produce at the level of his potential but he has really been up-and-down.

In my opinion the starters/backups should be:

Point - Senglin/Cannon
SG - Jefferson/Johns/Richardson
W - Gittens/Baker/Williams
PF - Bolomboy/Stavrev
C - Braxton/Hill

Having said this I think Stavrev should have been red shirted. As for the SG position, play all three guys and lets see which one comes thru. I believe it would be Jefferson.

Gittens should definitely be the starter at wing. He is better in every way than Baker.

If our second five is Cannon @ Point/Johnson or Richardson @ SG/Baker or Williams @ the Wing/Stavrev & Hill at the two post positions it is a pretty good one. Much better than in recent years. Those guys on the second five need to get some meaningful playing time and I think they will develop well.

I believe that this lineup gives Weber the best chance to develop and be their strongest at the time of the Big Sky and NCAA tournaments. If Rahe doesn't give at least 5 backups playing time his team will not develop in the way they need to.

I think the team is stronger with Cannon and Senglin on the floor together. Richardson and Jefferson are pretty deep in Rahe's dog house it seems. I'm guessing it has a lot to do with defensive effort. I'd like to seem them both work their way back into the rotation. But for now I like Cannon at the point and Senglin at the 2. The nice thing is that Senglin can easily move over to the point.

A big question is who is going to emerge as the 3rd main sub, assuming Gittens and Hill are 1 and 2. Will it be Jefferson, Richardson, John?

And I have no problem with Baker starting and bringing Gittens off the bench. Gittens, if he can hit from 3, will end up getting more minutes. But I wonder about his foul shooting and how that will impact the decision to have him on the floor at the end of close games.
I'm interested to see how Williams progresses. But he's definitely behind Baker and Gittens at the 3. Will he see time at the 4?
Clearly the decision to end the redshirt for John and Williams is tied to the coaches not seeing enough from Richardson and Stavrev.

Actually, nobody is in a dog house. There are some guys nursing minor injuries, like sprained ankles, who had limited minutes for that reason, but nobody is in anybody's dog house.

The starting lineup may change a few times before BSC play. Roles are still being evaluated. Nothing is set in stone.

Why the change in red shirts? In my opinion there was more than one reason. Mostly it is about defense and developing the depth. Williams is becoming a really strong defender and John just has a nose for the ball. I believe the coaches are trying to speed our game up and apply more full court pressure. I also believe that we will see more, and more varied, zone defenses this year than we ever have under this staff. The most minutes will still go to Bolomboy and Senglin, but after that it will be who is producing the most for the team. :twocents:
