Another area of improvement needed.

As pertaining to the quality of the game day experience coming to PGE Park, we have discussed two main topics that would serve to highly improve the product: (1) Eastside Grandstands, and (2) Collegiate Band.

Another area in need of improvement is the public address system---specifically, the electronics comprising the public address speaker system and the person of the game day announcer.

PGE Park management needs to upgrade the electronic speaker system by either enhancing the quality of the speakers or perhaps increasing the number of speakers and turning down the volume a bit to compensate. I, for one, have a difficult time trying to aurally process what is being announced when at my seat inside the stadium. The source of the problem has got to be either the quality of the electronics employed or the angle strategy in which they are being acoustically focused (or perhaps both). This represents an interesting and doable upgrade job. /users/31/07/37/smiles/595146.gif

Another problem is the public address announcer. Every year, it sounds as though the person announcing the game is just some schmoe whose turn it is at playing public address announcer---in other words, a rank amateur---rather than someone with a truly inspiring, professionally-trained announcer's voice. If we are so fortunate to locate a professional quality announcer, the sound system will need to be adjusted to optimize the resonance and tonal voice quality of the person.

I believe this is an area where PSU has a distinct opportunity to be the best in the state. The guy at Oregon, many like him, but I have always seen him more as a product of habituation---an acquired taste. The last game I saw at OSU was, I believe, the 1994 Civil War game. OSU's announcer seemed too rigid and the UO band played over the ends of his announcements repeatedly to apparently show what they thought of his announcing talents. Has the announcer there even changed since then?

Portland should really outshine the down-valley universities in this area. I believe our choice of stadium announcer should reflect our comparative advantage and having a great stadium announcer would serve as an another avenue to again strengthen the perception of the program product. :sunny:

I'm not an acoustics expert or anything, but I've never had a problem with the PA person or system at PGE. It is the Stott Center basketball guy who drives me crazy. He is so loud and over the top for such a small arena.

Totally agree. I personally have learned to totally ignore the public announcements because I can't understand what they are saying. I think part of the problem has to do with PGE Park itself, but I"m sure there are better systems out there.

I hear that the teacher on Peanuts is available. ;-) That would actually be an improvement at PGE Park.

Regarding the public address announcer in Eugene... Love him or hate him, you certainly know where you are when you hear him, and I think that is one of the points that you are getting at.

PSU has to identify the gameday experience as an issue that is going to be addressed, and correct the problem. With the recent steps and decisions, I feel confident that we will see improvement.

Yah I don't ever remember the PA being hi-fidelity. Sometimes it's just gibberish. But it's loud.
For awhile a couple years ago there was a small "Go Viks" combo at the home games. They made a lot of music a big sound. I vaguely remember them being keyboards, drums, a sax maybe another horn, guitar and bass. I think they were all PSU music department students grad students. I heard they got paid but most likely not much. Could have been work/study.
Then there's skydivers, helicopter fly overs, fireworks, ROTC firing a cannon with each score.
Now that Mouse and the run 'n shoot are here the guy doing the push-ups for each point is probably gonna have to be hauled away in an ambulance by the 4th quarter. And turn the siren on full blast and circle the block with a Go Viks flag flying.
Hey I'm pumped.
Go Viks!

The PA system is a problem but the more noise the crowd makes the less I notice the PA at all. I'm looking forward to larger crowds drowning out the PA.

Do the Vikings have any say over upgrades on the speaker system at PGE Park?

It's owned by the city, so I would suspect that PSU has zero say in it.

What about bringing in a temp setup for the home games? UO basically has those big speakers on the scoreboard blaring away for their PA.

Maybe PSU could work a deal with a local company or something for a PA setup for the games. Work it in trade for free advertising and some comp season tickets. Just thinking outloud here...

Great idea.

Somewhere in my memory is a vision of on-field speakers that were far superior to the house speakers.
