One more home tune up before we hit the road for the meat of the preseason schedule.

My interest in this game is to find out who will be red shirting and what the rotations might look like. I think we already have a fairly good idea, but this game could clear it up a bit. Because it is more of a preparation sort of game, I expect we will see the starters get a few more minutes in this one.

Anybody know anything about this Antelope Valley team? :coffee:

Antelope Valley? Only reason I'm going to this game is because it is the first game of the season. I'm really disappointed that they are on our schedule again. I really feel that AD's should have more say in the schedule for basketball.

I've heard that BJ Porter is their coach and he wanted this game.

Rahe, entering his 11th season as the Wildcat head coach, also told the Standard-Examiner that sophomore Juwan Williams will not see the hardwood this season, but instead will use a redshirt.

According to Rahe, the decision was mutual. Williams played out of his natural position a season ago to fill in a shortage at the power forward position and will take the year to adjust to playing at small forward in Rahe’s system.

“He got a little bit hurt this summer and didn’t have a lot of chances to run the three in our system,” Rahe explained. “We’re excited about his future, but he needs a year of playing in our system at the three spot.”

Due to prior commitments(watching paint dry). I wont be at this scrimmage. But here is the link for Antelope Valley Basketball anyway: https://www.uavpioneers.com/roster/0/1.php
The only way I can make my voice heard about this home schedule is by voting the only way I can, If i support this type of game then I would go, but since I don't then I wont be going to most of the home games. This is the 2nd year in a row I havn't bought season tix. I will probably end up going to more road games then home this year.

AVU is, obviously, not good. I really don't care. I didn't buy a ticket to see them.

They are not as good as BHSU, so what?

I would rather be at the game, watching my team, being around friends, enjoying life, than sitting home watching a rehash of the election or some other crap. :coffee:

We all have our own priorities, and watching bad basketball is no longer one of mine. I have grown tired of the excuses for the home schedule getting worse every year. :twocents:

To each his own, but I can think of many ways to enjoy life and watching a meaningless, noncompetitive basketball game against a school that I didn't even know existed is not one of them.

We do have a 2 for 1 deal in the pipeline, with Wyoming. Next year we have Pepperdine coming our way. I think we all want the same thing, including the coaches.

Your concerns are not going unnoticed. From what I have seen and heard, everybody, from the coaches up to the BSC comish. are hashing out ways to get better schedules. The discussion really does need to go all the way to the NCAA level. It's a problem everywhere. :coffee:

I understand the issues with scheduling. It is an issue only the NCAA can figure out. It would be nice if the other 250+ schools that are categorized as mid and lower majors, would stand together and force majors to play more on the road, but NCAA membership is an interesting caste system with varying levels of importance. Look at most WCC Schools, they absolutely reject playing on the road if they can. They have an inflated view of themselves because of two member institutions. Last I checked, one of those institutions still visits Ogden, well, every third year. It is a serious issue that can only be ironed out by the NCAA and we all know what type of paper tiger that institution is. If there isn't a lot of $$$ behind the deal, it won't happen. The NCAA really only exists to help the Haves have more and the Have-nots less. Opportunity is the best chance for schools like Weber and we never get that at home.

As for the schedule. I'm disgusted by one fact, that our coaching staff didn't have enough imagination to even try to play some one NEW this season. I don't care who the coach is at Antelope, we played them last year. I don't want to see the same beats year in and year out. It is frustrating! Play someone new. Play someone in Utah. I don't care that you don't like Judkins at Dixie, get over yourself and play them. Hell, Westminster is NAIA, why not play them? This has been beaten over and over again.

Yep, we all vote with our feet, wallets and butts.

Mine will be in a seat at the Dee tonight where I will watch bad college basketball and try to figure out who is going to play what role. What Rahe's RS strategy will be (especially with Williams already declared a RS). And I bet I love every minute of it ...

This type of opponent is pretty typical for the first game. To me West Coast Baptist in December is the wart on the schedule.

Please tell me which non conference home game I should get excited about this season. If UVU is the best you can come up with then that is truly sad. I shall keep my cash and then perhaps go to Reno for the Big Sky tourney instead.

Show up for the Denver game (who we lost to at their place last year) a good Summit League team. Maybe the game will be as good as last years' 99-95 win against South Dakota State from the same league -- the most exciting game we played at the Dee last year.

I've liked that home and home since it hit the schedule. Whether you like UVU or not, with Pope there grabbing a lot of in-state leftovers it is turning more and more into a rivalry game. With only 4 games at home, once again West Coast Baptist is the wart. It does not surprise me to see a patsy to get the team ready as the first game. Get Pepperdine here instead of West Coast Baptist, get Long Beach, Santa Barbara, Fullerton or Irvine here and that is a huge schedule improvement.

I am not defending our schedule. Like everyone I want to see it improved. And I've mentioned before as a total preseason schedule this is a good one because our road games are interesting.

AJ, you've declared your disgust before and said not showing up is your vote. That's fine. You've declared you have better things to do. I'm just making sure that people who come here know where I stand. I'll be there. Hopefully we'll see changes and I've actually personally talked to Bovee about this issue. But in the meantime, you'll see me in purple tonight -- and for UVU, Denver and West Coast Baptist...

I'm with you.

Until the NCAA steps in to help fix its broken system, we may have to suffer through some poor home OOC schedules. It doesn't mean that I suddenly hate basketball or my school. Even a poor BB game, in person, is better than sitting home doing nothing. :coffee:

RUNNER: It seems to me that you are off-base to blame Weber's poor scheduling on the NCAA. Take a look around. Look at Montana's schedule; take a look at Grand Canyon's schedule. There are examples everywhere of teams like Weber having strong schedules. I am not saying that the NCAA couldn't make it easier to build better schedules, they could. But I am saying that if a school wants to build a strong schedule they can. Lets keep focused on the accountable source of the scheduling problem at Weber. The athletic dept (Bovee) allows the coach (Rahe) to do his own scheduling. As long as that is the case it won't change much... end of story!

There is a little bit of truth in what you are saying, baller. There are some places that our coaches don't want to go and play. That makes any HnH with those schools out of the question. The same is true about many schools that refuse to come here for any contract, even a 2 for 1 deal. Tal is right when he said that Mid Majors need to stick together, but that just is not happening. This problem is not an easy fix. :twocents:

I had a great time at the game. We played great, in spite of the poor competition.

The crowd was larger than I had expected. The student section was active. Our guys played fast and with confidence. Everyone, who may get any minutes in the future, played significant minutes.

I believe it to be clear that our red shirts will be Williams, Stavrev, Darling, and Harding. Of course, Chapman will sit out on transfer rules. I think that everyone knows my feelings on red shirting. I have always seen it to be such a positive thing. Unless there is no other choice, it would be great if all freshmen could do it. Players who red shirt usually have a much better college career. It also helps them graduate on time. That alone is huge. :coffee:

BTW, Dusty played point guard for the last 4 minutes of the game. He played mostly at the 4 spot prior to that.

WE PLAYED AN ANTELOPE WHILE THE BIG SKY PLAYED HIGHER LEVEL TEAMS...
Montana State played Washington State
Portland State played Arizona State
Southern Utah played Valparaiso
Northern Arizona played Santa Clara
Sac State played Colorado
Idaho State played New Mexico
Montana played USC
and
Weber played an Antelope

Yes, it is nice to have a tune-up early but that is what secret scrimmages and exhibitions are for! It won't effect our scheduling if the NCAA did step up. Weber State needs someone to step up and push to build a stronger program. It begins with recruiting (we do that pretty well) and requires playing quality opponents (which helps recruiting) in order to build a more nationally recognized program. When you hear announcers for NBA games talk about players from Dayton, Gonzaga etc., you don't hear them preface their comment about those players with the statement he is from "little" Gonzaga. But when you hear them talk about Damian it is always with amazement that he played at "little" Weber State. Come on AD, athletic department step it up! Build a quality schedule and it will result in stronger national recognition. For one, I am tired of being the "big fish in the puddle". Lets become a nice fish in the lake please...
