New Portland State men's basketball coach Tyler Geving has completed his staff with the hiring of Anthony Owens as an assistant coach. Owens joins Geving, holdover Eric Harper and recently hired Nate DuChesne as the coaching staff for the Vikings in 2009-10.
Owens comes to Portland State after being an assistant coach this past season at College of Eastern Utah. The Eagles went 25-7 on the year. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach for two years at Eastern Arizona College. EAC went 53-13 over those two years, reaching the Region 1 Tournament finals two years in a row, and advancing to the national tournament in 2007-08.
"I got to know Anthony through recruiting his players in recent years," said Geving. "I am impressed with the contacts that he has had in Arizona and Utah junior colleges. He brings experience in recruiting from outside the northwest as we look to expand our recruiting base."
Owens starred at the University of Great Falls where he led the conference in rebounding. Prior to that he played at Arkansas-Fort Smith junior college, and was part of a team that compiled a 55-11 record over two seasons.
Owens earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 2006 from Great Falls.
