Portland State University will use a $2.3 million donation from Arlene Schnitzer to expand its performance space in Lincoln Hall and to help launch a new College of the Arts.
The college includes the School of Architecture, School of Art and Design, School of Music and the School of Theatre and Film.
Schnitzer made the donation in memory of her late husband Harold. The husband and wife both attended high school in Lincoln Hall, which was built in 1911, before it became PSU.
Today, Lincoln Hall is home to the College of the Arts dean's office and the schools of music and theatre and film. The money will fund construction of a three-story glass tower that will complete the renovation of the 102-year-old building and provide space for studios, an art gallery and a black box theater.
The tower will face Southwest Broadway, allowing passersby a glimpse of the activities happening inside.
Seventeen community groups staged more than 85 events in Lincoln Hall performance spaces last year.
“Before it was a university, Lincoln Hall served as a reminder to the early arrivals in this community that education was the key to a progressive city and individual success,” said Schnitzer. “I am proud to be making a gift to help build this tower in memory of my husband, Harold. The education he received in this building led to his ability to have a strong vision for the future of this city and state, which he loved very much."
PSU is hoping to raise an additional $1.1 million to complete its fundraising campaign for the Lincoln Hall project.
