Athletic Facilities

Good video. Significant improvement over the Nest, but this is just a stop gap measure for a decade or so. An events center is still a need for athletics but more importantly the university as a whole. The "best in the nation" is just showmanship, no one truly believes a rec center converted into a playing venue qualifies as such.

Hopefully they have something to tarp off the running track, roll down similar to the rec court dividers but maybe ad signage? Paint those lower walls from white as well.

Lets go FBS, join the nPAC and invest a whopping $5M on a revamped student rec center with pull out seats to support our G5 BBall program. And add cushions to two sections of our roll out stadium with a whizzy board.

Until some serious coin is pumped into facility upgrades (stadium/arena), I look at this whole exercise as futility just like when we moved from D2 to FCS and did absolutely nothing for 25yrs on facility upgrades.

Essentially we are going from D2 to G5. Recipe for disaster.

Still no funding source for the stadium, no BOT approval, no updated renderings and before you know it we will be end of the '25 season still sitting on our hands saying next year......

It's beyond me how Orr expects anyone to take him seriously when he says stupid shit like "best in the nation". It speaks volumes regarding his lack of judgment and his integrity. He's supposed to be an athletic director and a face of the university...not a carnival barker. Embarrassing.

Orr’s not a builder, he and his admin haven’t gotten any significant facilities fundraised and built during his tenure here. It’s probably the only significant knock against him during his tenure here. The Well only happened because Dr. Wood had the balls to raid a bucket of money and get something done. I don’t expect Orr to do anything other than hype up whatever “flashy and new” facilities come through due to Dr. Wood’s initiatives and wherewithal.

That said, let's keep our eye on the prize. Dr. Wood got a new hoops venue done (fund allocation & construction, anyone in the business knows how heavy of a lift this is) in less than a year while prior administrations did nothing but talk and fail to act on successful student referendums. Obviously we would all prefer a new events center but given what is coming online to address an immediate need during a unique moment in time for Hornet athletics, I'm not going to spend a lot of energy being overly critical of what we want vs what we are getting.

I agree with most of what you are saying...especially your opening line. One of the problems I have with Orr is that when he was campaigning for this job he put heavy emphasis on his ability to get facilities built. People make excuses for his lack of production in that area but the fact is he couldn't even get more restrooms into the stadium. Classic case of over promised and under preformed.
I don't agree with Dr. Woods politics but I'm very appreciative of his positions regarding athletics and athletic facilities.

seems like there is going to be a lot space between the seats and the court to me
I sense one of those sides won’t be fixed to the wall. There’s a similar deal at either U Portland or maybe Western Oregon or maybe the Tacoma Dome where they can fold the seats to the back AND the front of the space the seats normally occupy as needed.

(Not that I want to make the Tacoma Dome seem like a marvel of flexibility. It certainly seemed to host everything but baseball, but there’s reasons it’s now primarily a concert venue. The pitch of seating for a baseball event should not be your aspiration when playing hockey in an arena.)
