Athletics Budget Recovers

From today's Idaho State Journal:

In about a year's time, the Idaho State University Athletic Department has improved its financial situation by more than $1 million.

The department ended the last fiscal year $798,000 in debt. On Friday, Vice President for Finance and Administration James Fletcher announced it is now operating at more than $380,000 in the black.

Plus,i would love to see their real figures, because if isu is all of a sudden in the black after what has been reported as their deficit then i want "the miracle man" fletcher running my 401k, what a bunch of BS! They[fletcher, vailas, ] must think we are all a bunch of idiots who take whatever they say as gospel in the ISJ. Recovers? the teams all suck and the coaches all bitch about their budgets and lack of facilities, morale is at an all time low and the A.D. has to get his daddy to change his diaper at lunch. go bengals!
 
expokygrad, are ever going to do anything but complain? Rather than bad-mouth the coaches and the AD, why not actually do something?

The teams could use our support.
 
The following is an excerpt of a speech delivered by former President Teddy Roosevelt in France on April 23, 1910. I'm sure most of you have read, or heard this before, but it bears repeating anyway... because it's true, critics are a dime a dozen, even cheaper today.

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The truth is...even after the football program starts winning again, even after more minor sports start winning, even after the first major donations for Bengal Village are committed, and yes, even after construction on Bengal Village begins and is one day completed, there will always be people who have to find something to bitch about...usually because they have some sort of "personal score" they feel they must settle... truly cold and timid souls.
 
expokygrad, if you have access to the athletic department's "real figures" please enlighten the rest of us as to the department's true financial position. Otherwise, give credit where credit is due. Good work Fletcher and Tingey.
 
From what I have seen, the numbers from last year's budget look ligit. No smoke and mirrors. Give credit where credit is due..good to see some positive news for a change. Congrats to Jeff Tingey, Jim Kramer, and James Fletcher.

Also, will the softball money that is "returned" by Larry Stocking be added back into last year's or this year's budget? :D
 
Oh yes, congrats to tingey, fletcher and kramer[who was the fiscal officer in place when the athletic dept. went into the huge hole, but GOT A RAISE!] for running every program into the ground! Congrats to them for having a Div 1 athletic dept with ONE secretary for the WHOLE DEPT! I'm sure the coaches love taking the time out of game planning , practice planning, to type up those letters, fix the copy maching, fill out the forms, answer all the calls, take messages for each other, MISS the important recruits calls, need I go on further? The football coaches have let it be known they HAVE NO MONEY TO RECRUIT WITH! Must be fun for the teams to travel like junior college players with 8 hour [or longer] bus rides, eating fast food when there is enough subway to go around[ask tingey bout that!] What a great college experience for those athletes to do their own practice gear laundry, wear 4 year old uniforms, buy their own athletic shoes, coaches drive athletes in their own cars to games,oh yes, congrats to the three wise men and the great vailas. The athletes and coaches thank you! You think I am down on the coaches and athletes? far from it! I applaud what they have been able to do, it's a miracle there have been any success in the last 10 years....
 
Welcome to life in the Big Sky, expokygrad. Jerry Glanville said last week that Big Sky travel is not about winning games, it's about getting to the game before kickoff. It took Portland State 12 hours to get to their game with NAU, and they left 22 players between Phoenix and Flagstaff when their bus broke down.

You can't have a first class program if you don't have first class revenues. Take a look at the athletic department revenues for FY 08, as reported to the State Board of Education in June: about $8 million. The biggest sources of that? State funding--about $3 million in state money. Students contributed $1.8 million in fees. Football generated only $500 K in ticket sales ($195,000) and game guarantees ($300k).

Yes, the football program, and all the athletic programs, are having to scrape to survive, and yes the travel conditions are horrible. But when your home games are generating an average of $40,000 per game in ticket revenues, you have to cut corners. We now know that ISU athletic programs were "living above their means" under the previous athletic department administration. That's how you go $900 K into the hole -- overestimating revenues, and spending above your allocated budgets. Just like any consumer who maxes out his credit cards, adjusting to life without the extras can be painful.

I know people like Jeff Tingey and Jay McMillan are going out and meeting with potential donors every day. When they travel to away football games, they schedule meetings with potential donors in every city they visit -- people like ex-ISU athletes and alums who have successful businesses. But it takes time to develop relationships with those people, and the constant turnover in the athletic director's office makes it impossible to maintain long-term relationships. Even if they are successful in getting gifts for things like facilities, that does nothing to alleviate the short-term operating pressures. With an economic recession ahead and more state-ordered funding holdbacks, things are likely to get worse before they get better.

Could the university be doing more to support athletics? Probably, and perhaps an appeal will be made to Vailas to pump some more discretionary state dollars into the program as a short-term fix. But the State Board of Education has put a ceiling on how much state support can go into the athletic department budget, so there is only so much Vailas can do, even if he is inclined to put more money into the program.

The only viable long-term solution is putting a quality product on the field that will put fans in the stands. I think Coach Z and his staff can accomplish that over time, and the best thing we can do as fans is support the team through these lean times, so we don't further handcuff their efforts to bring good players into the program.

I agree with that last bit; support is what's needed now, not blind criticism. Get a clue, expokygrad.

I'm gonna break down just a few fallacies here...

You blamed Jeff for this, but Paul actually was the one who eliminated those positions.

"Must be fun for the teams to travel like junior college players with 8 hour [or longer] bus rides" ... The trip to Idaho sucked, granted, but if we flew, it would have only been seven hours (Three to Boise, 2 1/2 in the airport, 1 for the flight, 30 minutes to get bags, 1 hour to Moscow).

"eating fast food when there is enough subway to go around[ask tingey bout that!]" ... I'm on every trip, and I have no clue what you are implying here. The one thing we do really well on the trips is eat. The food has been first class all the way actually.

Wear 4 year old uniforms, buy their own athletic shoes, coaches drive athletes in their own cars to games ... the football uniforms are brand new, and only women's basketball wore older uniforms last year, and that was by Newlee's choice, since they had only wore that set for a few games prior to the Nike contract being signed. I bought my own cleats and goalie gloves in college, but each program has a Nike show allotment, no coaches drive their own cars to games, unless they choose to do so.

Just setting the record straight on those.....

Not THAT Jim Mora, the OTHER Jim Mora (the former's son) who is in line to take over the Seattle Seagulls after Holmgren steps down.

Like ISU, D-1 football in the state of WA and the NFL seahawks are struggling mightily. Who will get a win first - ISU or UW? I think ISU gets its first and only "W" v. Sac State, and UW eeks by WSU 2 - 0 in the "Rotten" Apple Cup in 2008.

At least ISU athletics budget is in the black, right?

Anyone catch the MBB scrum today at Reed Gym? Oh wait, that's another thread.

So soccer didn't drive their own cars to boise last spring to the tournament there? So slaughter gets out of the pressbox to do laundry on the weekends? so tingey didn't have to go get more food [subway. gourmet!]on a football trip because some players didn't get any? so the track athletes don't buy their own shoes? so cross country is so well funded?so how is the men's golf team doing? sorry whoever you are "setting the record straight" I have friends in the dept that aren't afraid of vailas and tingey that know the truth and want the people out there to know whats going on. blame everything on bubb, that's been the party line since tingey's daddy got to vailas. That is the record being set straight! All that money now, right? Gonna fill those positions that bubb cut? didn't think so. Can't get a medical school that way. Dont know what im talking about? okay , just spew more lies isusid[who are you, tingeys babysitter?], everybody drink the kool aid it will be fine. what a joke..as for utah bengal, here's a glass for you..
