PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State Athletics Department is now providing its fans with new and exciting ways to follow the Vikings online, joining the social media wave that has hit college athletic departments nationwide.
The athletic department has been involved with social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter for a few weeks, while they are also in the process of teaming up with the University for a You Tube page.
The athletics web site, GoViks.com, will continue to serve as the primary source of information for PSU fans, but with the growing influence of social networking web pages like Facebook and Twitter, the time was right for the athletics department to join such sites says Director of Marketing Kenny Dow.
“The landscape of college athletics and the way we communicate with our fans in continually evolving," said Dow. "Twitter, Facebook and other social networking applications will help alumni, fans and students to stay in near constant contact with Portland State Athletics while giving them the opportunity to provide feedback and discussion directly.
"As we try to keep up with the demand from our supporters for continuous information about the daily goings-on in the world of Portland State Athletics, we found it is in our best interest, and the best interest of our fans to use both the tradition Portland State Athletics web site and the social networking applications. We are constantly looking for new ways to keep in contact with our supporters in an attempt to continue to stay in touch with our fans."
Facebook is the leading social networking site and provides Vikings fans a chance to follow PSU athletics through applications. The site allows fans to follow the athletics department and its teams from wall posts, while also giving fans a chance to discuss Viking-related topics with one another.

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users’ updates (otherwise known as “tweets”), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.

Additionally, Assistant Soccer Coach Melanie Langley's twitter page is at http://www.twitter.com/PSUsoccer20, and the department's page is at http://www.twitter.com/PSU_VIKINGS.
The athletics department will also soon be joining You Tube, where fans can see free videos related to PSU teams, coaches and players.
"GoViks.com is still where we want our fans coming for their information about PSU athletics, but we also recognize that the younger generation relies heavily on these social networking sites for their information," said Assistant Athletics Director for Media Relations Mike Lund. "We are excited to provide our fans with new ways to follow us.
"We are also in the process of adding more video content to GoViks.com and that will be our primary outlet for video features."
GoViks.com is currently undergoing some changes that will make for a more user-friendly web site. New and more readily accessible video content will be added in the coming months, as will a "Fan Zone" where PSU followers can find links to Facebook, Twitter, You Tube and information on fan-specific events.
