BACK TO FOOTBALL: NAU

Now that we've spent the entire last week measuring our wankors with montana fans, I think its time to actually talk about the game of football.

NAU is playing a SEC school tomorrow, Ole Miss, and is, in all likelyhood, going to lose. However, I think it really depends on how badly. If its close, it could give NAU a lot of confidence heading into the final two weeks of their season, having to face Weber in Ogden and Eastern in Flagstaff. If they happen to get creamed, it could, definitely damage their confidence. No matter, NAU has a very good two-dimensional offense. If you shut down their QB, you still have to deal with their running game. For Weber to win they need to run the offense that the players were recruited to run (THE SPREAD), and let Cam actually air out the ball like he was doing all last season.

We should definately be cheering for NAU a good performance from them moves them up in the rankings and helps our chances by potentially beating another ranked team! A win is very unlikely but not impossible with the team they have

So does anybody care about the football game Saturday besides me? This should be one Hell of a good game yet nobody is talking about it. WTF?
I personally can't wait for this game.

I will be screaming my head off, provided I still have a voice after the WSU - USU basketball game the night before.

May I suggest picking up a cowbell at Cal-Ranch just in case you lose your voice at the basketball game.
You can pick one up for anywhere from $4-$15 and they are freaking loud.

The missus and I plan to make the trek.

Should be a great game. Too bad NAU is probably not rated highly enough to push us past EWU in the rankings if we win.

The best scenario for Weber's slim chances for an at-large bid is to win out and finish with 7 DI victories, AND for EWU to beat SUU but lose to NAU.

Hi: 33°
Mostly cloudy with a 50 percent chance of snow. Highs in the upper 30s.
Lo: 22°
Partly cloudy. Lows in the upper 20s. Highs around 40.
I love this weather forecast for Saturday, you would think it would favor the team that doesn't have a dome.
Bring it!!

I will certainly be at the NAU game. It will be my 46th consectutive WSU football game (home and away) and no amount of cold, snow or rain can keep me away! Go Wildcats!

Is it just me or does nasty weather bring out the beast in Higgins? Bizzard, Monsoon, it doesn't seem to faze him much.

Why do Lumberjacks live and play football in a bio-dome? It will interesting to see how they react to playing in Wildcat Weather on Sat. Go Wildcats!

NAU has actually played well this year while dealing with inclement weather. It was brutal cold in a win in Bozeman (MSU) and driving rain in a win in Portland (PSU). If NAU loses, I doubt weather will be the reason.

Being worn out with their third road game in a row may affect them but the team seems to have come out of the U of Mississippi game (from what I read in the news) with, thankfully, no new injuries to go with the slew that have already occurred this season. NAU's been down something like 6-7 starters on defense since the beginning of the season.

The Lumberjacks have played one truly bad half in a game this season - the second half @ Sacramento State. They struggled at times @ the U of Arizona and @ the U of Mississippi, which is to be expected, but kept those games competitive. NAU played well throughout the game vs. U of Montana too.

I'd have to say that NAU is in the same boat that Weber State regarding possible playoff bids: with no room for error. In both cases, two games remain but after scheduling two games vs. FBS schools neither team can lose again. If WSU or NAU scheduled two lower to mid-level FCS or DII schools guaranteed wins then they'd have less worries. FBS schools just don't get any credit/reward for challenging themselves in non-conference scheduling. I don't know WSU's reasoning ..... amp up the level of competition.... a means to fund the rest of the athletic department....but NAU likes their yearly in-state BCS games vs. UofA/ASU but the Ole Miss game was done strictly to create some financial leg room for the athletic department as a whole.

I will say that I'm sad that one of these teams will be on the outside looking in after Saturday afternoon.

Game prediction:

I think these two teams are close in talent. Both should put up yards and points. Your defense seems a bit better. I don't see the utter collapse that occurred last season happening with this year's team. NAU's faced their share of adversity early and didn't roll over and die after getting down early vs. UofA, UofMississippi and UofM.

So I have to go with my team, without being a complete homer, in this one.

Lumberjacks 33
Wildcats 27

Wish I could make the trip. I'm sure the JackPack members making the trip will play nice. Chat em up if you cross paths. Sadly, I won't be able to catch this game on the internet/radio due to a prior arrangement for a hike.

Best of luck. Go Jacks!

I'm guessing there are a few reasons:
1.) finances.....people are smoking crack if they think the Arizona state education system will ante up funds to help in the construction of a nice outdoor football facility with the current financial cluster**** going on in Phoenix at the moment
2.) all of those Phoenix/Tucson/Southern California wankers who go to school there bitch and gripe about the cold to begin with and I can imagine football attendance would be even worse if they played outdoors
3.) it was built back in the day when large, multi-purpose stadiums were the in thing....it's used for football, mens and womens basketball, indoor track & field and, I think, intramurals as well as the Arizona Cardinals training camp....the Walkup Skydome isn't going away anytime soon.....NAU put in a new "soft" carpet recently that's supposedly better for knee injuries

Hey, MT Jack, thanks for joining in! You are correct that either NAU or Weber will be on the outside looking in after tomorrow's game, but I disagree with you about the usefulness of FBS and DII games.

Besides earning a little extra $$$, could you imagine how different the rankings would be if either Northern Arizona or Weber had prevailed in even one of the FBS contests? Weber out-gained Colorado State and had three opportunities in the red zone to put the game away before falling one point short.

On the other hand, DII games simply do not count in the polls or power ratings and are a waste of time. For example, If EWU loses either of their last two games, the Eagles will finish with only 6 DI victories, despite a 7-win resume, because Western Oregon will not count.

What does make sense are out of conference FCS games, such as this year's Lumberjack win over Southern Utah and the upcoming Wildcat victory over Cal Poly.
