Basketball assistant coaches

FYI, Portland State signed a big time point guard today, Lateef McMullan.

The Viks will be much improved next year, as will the Eagles and the whole league will be getting a lot better.

Mcmullan looks like a nice pickup for the viks

I still don't think PSU makes the conference tourney, Geving just isn't a very good coach. He never seems to have his team in control. It doesn't look like they respect him, and I've seen his team quit
on him besides this last season, too.

I'll take EWU in 2nd this upcoming season, and PSU in 7th.

The Eagles will struggle to make the upper division. They just can't in one year jump over that many teams. I do think they will be really good, but it will take 3-4 years, just like it took Northern Col, some time under Boyle who is a terrific coach.

As for the Vikings, Geving did a really good job under the circumstances. It is hard to motivate a team which has no where to go at the end of the season, (THANKS TO KEN BONE AND HIS LACK OF PAYING ATTENTION TO ACADEMICS), with the Vikings being on probation. He actually had a better record this year than last year. He had a terrible situation and made the most of it.

Rontheoldwiseeagle,
Don't worry, we have one of our former Asst. Coach, he was retained by Coach. Shantay Legans, hope I am spelling his name correctly. He is know to me as "CHROME DOME" Coach was in Reese Court a last night after 6 pm, he stated he was happy to see some friendly faces. Vic

Word is around basketball circles in the NW, the Eagle assistant coaches will be named on Monday at the latest.

Stay tuned.

Please tell me that you guys are not this misinformed/naive. Two of the three staff members had already been decided prior to Hayford being announced as our new head coach. He was bringing his assistant with him from Whitworth and Ehlo was a done deal before the Hayford announcement. State agencies have human resource offices that have forced Hayford to jump through hoops before he can "officially" announce his staff. Shawntay Leggans is a holdover from Earlywine (was already an EWU employee) so there doesnt have to be a delay.

so if they have already figured out who the assistants are then I assume that they have been out recruiting some already. hopefully we will find out a little bit about who is on the radar in the next couple weeks.

you spoil sport, no drama, I had heard he would bring his assistant, but i just wanted to talk BB. I wanted the announcement during wsu week. What does anyone know about the Whitworth assistant?
T Jones helped by having his pro day on Thursday. I still think he should play corner, he could have a long career there. Running backs don't last long.
Back to BB. Due they have any opening for recruits this year? no seniors!

Ron:

Keep doing what you always do, you are a great contributor and a great fan. Until there is a formal announcement it is always good to wonder and of course your far from naive. I kind of wish people would keep personal comments out of here, but unfortunately that is the world we live in, kind of sad.

As I have stated before, Hayford will win and probably win big, but it is unrealistic to think he will just jump over everyone and finish high in the league, that does not happen and will not for a couple of years. Ehlo would be the last person I would hire as an assistant, but of course I don't have any say and am not the boss.

Keep it up Ron.

" but it is unrealistic to think he will just jump over everyone and finish high in the league, that does not happen and will not for a couple of years "
. nwhoops44^^^^

you keep saying this nwhoops44, but it sounds like you're basing your opinion on Hayford, alone. I'm not basing my opinion on him at all, because I know nothing about him, but anybody is better than Earlywine, and Hayford sounds solid. The fact that he has been able to keep
his guys together impresses me. Randy Rahe came in, and lost a bunch of guys, and found a way to claim both the regular and tourney titles in '07, his first season. Weber was picked 8th preseason.

Remember, NAU, NoCo, and MSU all lost a heapful of talented Seniors, and UM lost the most talented big the conference has seen in a long while. These 4 were all in the conference tourney. The only one I can guarantee will make the tourney at this point is Montana out of these 4.

Second, I watched EWU at Weber twice to end the season, they are extremely talented, right now. Dean, Forbes, and Coliman are quick, and can shoot. Johnson is a real big time talent in my opinion. Weber had won 8 conference games in a row before playing EWU in the last regular season game in Ogden. WSU beat NAU by 27, Montana by 16, PSU by 22 ISU by nearly 30, MSU by 25, and the list goes on. EWU comes in and beats us by 16 points, our worst loss at home in 3-4 years. The only other loss at home this season to Byu by 4. A few days later in the 1st Round of the conference tourney and the Eagles gave Weber absolute fits, and it seemed like a repeat. EWU up by 10 or 12 at halftime. Bamforth made some Clutch 3's down the stretch and WSU pulled away in the last couple of minutes to pull it off.

What I'm trying to say is EWU is that good and talented to be a contender next season. They are a very dangerous team, and even with Lillard coming back off his injury, and 1 very talented Redshirt F(Hajek), and Otis (Redshirt transfer), and 3 highly touted incoming Fresh joining Bullinger 1st team, Bamforth (Newcomer of the year, and First team and Fulton ( Freshmen of the year), Tresnak, Richardson, Mahoney ..... The Eagles still make me nervous as a Wildcat fan next season.

They fought through their injuries to Dean, and Allen and really gelled together to end the season despite having Earlywine as their HC.

I love the passion and loyalty.

But to compare Weber State to Eastern Washington in basketball does not cut it. Randy Rahe had tradition behind him, Eastern has no history in basketball for the most part.

As I have said, Eastern picked an outstanding coach, more than likely the best person available, but the whole league with the exception of Idaho State and Northern C, will be much improved, but to jump over that many teams in one season brings unrealistic expectations, even with the players coming back.

I have followed Big Sky basketball for 25 years, it does not make me an expert, it probably makes me old, but the proof will be in the final standings and at best, I see Eastern being in 6th place next year at best.

Plus it will be an adjustment for Hayford coming from D-3 to D-1 and will take awhile for him to get his feet on the ground, if nothing else he will have to get use to a completely different set of officials, a huge part of the game and the way the game is called in the Big Sky.

No way EWU finishes 6th.

The only teams that have a chance of finishing ahead of the Eagles are NAU, Weber State, and Montana.
PSU, Sac, ISU, MSU, NoCo will be behind EWU in the standings when the season wraps up. I think EWU and Montana will be in a dog fight for the #2 seed. I'll take the Eagles, they can shoot, UM can not.

nwhoops;
It appears you put too much weight into the playing ability of the coach. What this coach has brought to his past teams is getting the kids to play to their maximum capability and as a team. That is good coaching and it is what makes the difference at every level.
Expecting next years team to make it to the second seed is a tall order but I would expect their level of improvement from the beginning of the season to playoff time will be substantial and noticeable, so they could make it. That level of improvement does not always happen.
Damn, its a good time to be an Eagle!!

We many not challenge for the regular season title next year, but I do think we'll be improved. We had a young team this year, and all of those players will be back next season (I think). Yes, Hayford will have to adjust his recruiting and coaching to the Division I level, but bottom line he is a proven coach. We won't finish worse than we did this year, and we got a BSC tournament birth. I'd expect us to finish somewhere between 3-5th in the conference next year, but better is certainly possible. It'd be nice to be Big Sky champs again. 2004 was a long time ago!

you have some good points nwhoops but 6th? Come on. We have a new coaching staff, granted but also everyone is returning from this years team. We will win many more games next season, believe that.
