Big 12 only wants BYU for football...
From what the media in the state of UTAH where BYU is, they are pointing to FULL membership for BYU :twocents: I don't see why the media in Sacto would even be covering this story or be in "the know" quite like the Utah media is.

:thumb: Not much of a BYU fan, but if they go Big 12, which is looking likely, having a annual classic like this might be the only way that Weber gets the chance to not only play the Utes, but also, the Cougars on a winnable/neutral floor. After going PAC 12, getting the Utes in Ogden again doesn't seem likely. Might be the same setup with BYU. I'd rather get them on neutral courts rather than only playing them at their home stadiums.

As for the Big 12, I'm sure they will start with 2, might end up with 4 new members, but will begin by inviting two schools, and theses are for full memberships. BYU and Cincy are the two I believe will end up joining the Big 12. Adding these two won't shake things up too much. It could open a spot for New Mexico State eventually somewhere, and it will also, help Seattle finally get back into the WCC. The WAC, is going to die no matter, and this isn't going to slow down that death knell.

Hey aj.....ever heard of the internet?? Sac media is not covering it but UOP (a WCC member school just in case you in UTAH have never heard of it) is interested....but who really knows....

The YBU AD did mention that it would be for all sports. What he said was that they would seek membership for football and all Olympic sports. I think that would include almost everything. There may be some sports that they would have to add or some that they would have to keep independent. I'm not a real YBU fan, but I can clearly see that football independence has been a complete failure, and that the mountain kitties don't fit in the WCC in almost any way. They really have a hard time fitting anywhere. :coffee:

What BYU's AD wants and what the Big12 wants is probably not the same thing or the deal would probably already be done....if you look at my first post, I said the Big12 wants BYU for football only.....

I'm not sure the Big 12 itself knows what it wants...

but the list of potentials is pretty darn shallow as this UT blogsite so eloquently points out:

I'm OK with all of that. Regardless of postponing our home game with them. We just need to break through against them sometime soon. It's been too long. :coffee:

That's fine with me.

Haven't been on the forum since the news about the Beehive Classic broke... I'm a little surprised to see so much negativity and pessimism toward the new event. As a basketball fan in general, I'm really excited about the chance to see all four major in state teams in a single event.

For one, we get to play Utah again. It'll only be once every three years, but hey, at least we are playing against them again. I imagine there will be enough interest for these games to be televised. Great exposure for Weber, and a chance to play some high level competition.

For the series with BYU, nothing changes... Home, Away, Neutral... That's the way the series was looking from here on out anyways... I respect BYU for coming up to the Dee to play at all. They potentially have a lot to lose by playing us in Ogden. Harsh reality, beating us doesn't really boost their RPI or BPI and losing to us would be a huge mark on their record... Like it or not, that is the way it is perceived by most.

The series from here on out with Utah State will probably be like BYU. Home, away, neutral. I'm fine with that. Even though we end up with less home games in the long run, I think the exposure and attention to our program is worth it.

Except for the NCAA tournament, which keeps growing, college basketball nationwide is dropping in popularity. I think this event is a good way to get the local fan bases engaged and interested early in the season. No doubt that the event will be covered heavily in local media... We need to acknowledge the obvious positive here. We were invited into an event with the 3 "big" schools in the state. SUU and UVU got stiffed. We are on the inside. If it means giving up an ooc home gave every few years to Utah State, big deal... The positives far outweigh the negatives.

We can't afford to perceive ourselves as bigger than we truly are, we don't have a lot of leverage here to argue against this format. We're in. Now we'll see how many of these games we can win!

:thumb: Great post Geo. Very realistic approach to Wildcat Basketball and NCAA Basketball in general. It seems like there are just over 100 NCAA teams that aren't willing to travel in the preseason. The rest are too expensive or aren't willing to make a trip to the Dee. It is a fact that teams are worried about RPI and BPI, which are poorly measured in my opinion. Road games should be weighed, no matter the competition, heavily for away teams.

My frustration isn't necessarily the Classic, which I agree with you, that the positives outweigh the negatives, but the lack of concerted effort to attract fans or to build a fan base by athletics. I wonder how Weber will fill up their commitment?
