Can WSU defend the Oquirrh Bucket?? I don't believe WSU has ever won the Bucket in back to back seasons.I know we don't play Utah, but we still have a good chance of going 5-0 against teams in Utah. In what order are teams from Utah listed? Mine: WSU, BYU, USU, SUU, UVU, College of Eastern Utah and Univ. of Utah :-D

We'll handle BYU at our place, USU at the Spectrum will be difficult, entirely possible this season, but difficult.

I've said since the end of last season we will be better, and deeper this season. If all comes together I expect to possibly (Logan?) win out in State, collect 25 W's on the way to taking the conference. The conference tourney in Ogden is another story. :ohno:

BYU - picked 2nd WCC
USU - picked 1st WAC
WSU - picked 2nd BSC
UVU
UofU
SUU

Picks - Athlon Sports

byu is in Ogden so it is winnable, obviously it is not in Provo with its home cooking. playing in Logan where we haven't won since 1994 I don't know if we can pull it off though I'm always hopeful. we dont even play utes but they r supposed to be really bad again, maybe sub 300 again. we will sweep suu.

we should go 3-2 vs in-state, 4-1 would be pretty exciting and could get us a bucket win if it was still around.

we have won the bucket, officially 4 times: '77, '86, '93, '00, '12*. it was "retired" in 2011 because utah didn't want to be seen as losing it by never playing any instate teams.

*trophy is gone

The Bucket was donated to the Utah Basketball Hall of fame or something like that by Utah State who was the last to win it.

Personally, I think they should bring it out of "retirement" and let Weber, USU, SUU, BYU and UVU fight for it. But for it to work everyone of those teams would have to play everyone else at least once a year.

Screw Utah

On my list it would have to be

BYU (until we can beat them they will be # 1)
WSU (I think Weber is better than USU, but winning in Logan is not easy.....or fair)
USU ( USU gets us at home, but Weber is better team, but I dont think it matters when playing in Logan)
UVU (Played really well last year, glad they are on our yearly schedule again....well I hope)
Utah (Who cares)
SUU (Hope to see the T-Birds improve, but with a new coach it may take time, but who knows Rahe won the Big Sky his first year)

It really doesn't matter if there is a physical trophy. WSU, USU, UVU, BYU, and SUU should get together and decide how to run the show. It's OK that the UUs don't want to play. They can be on the outside looking in. They can continue to play Cardinal Stritch while building up that impressive resume'. We should all do our own thing and have a great time doing it. We should make it the most entertaining product out there.

We could call it 'On Top of Utah', or some other catchy name. We could market the heck out of it and see where it goes. I think it might be a lot of fun.

I wrote about this at the first of the summer and frankly, I don't think anything significant has changed which could change the pre-season order.

BYU - Haws is the best player in the state, I hate to say it, but he is.
Weber/USU (this is a wash, but due to the fact that USU is hosting the Cats, Weber probably should be third. Winning in the Spectrum is never easy, but gratefully we get them on a holiday weekend when the school will be empty).
UU
UVU
SUU

Weber vs. USU lineup
PG: Wheelwright vs. Davis Advantage: Weber (Davis will be good, but he is only a Fresh and Wheels has solid DI experience)
SG: Bam vs. Medlin Advantage: Draw (Bam looked a lot better in last years game than Medlin, but Preston figured things out pretty quick and is the team leader in Logan, but Bam is the team leader in Ogden so...)
SF: Barry vs. Butterfield Advantage: Weber
PF: Mook vs. Reed Advantage: USU (I love Mook, but Reed doesn't have to worry about bad knees)
C: Tresnak vs. Shaw Advantage: USU (this is a slight advantage, but I think Shaw is going to be really good for the Aggies, besides, Stew does a far better job of coaching bigs...look at his gut, thats why).

a win in logan would be amazing, talhad, but we have had 2-3 chances in the last 7 yrs even with school being out of session. its not just weber, no one in the state has won in logan since the 1990's .

we will need to stop medlin to have a chance. he will be a 3 time wac 1st team player

BYU is the reason that the bucket was retired. Dave Rose didn't think that it was fair that UVU and SUU counted because he doesn't play them so there were several times that both BYU and USU ended up with 1 loss but USU got the bucket for playing more in state teams. Rose even refused to turn it over 1 time. As far as the in state teams go this year, it's hard to not put BYU on top. They are returning some great players. USU has to play in Provo this year and while I'm hopeful for an Aggie win, I don't see it happening. USU will be the 2nd best team in the state this year. Sorry but you guys couldn't win in Logan with Lillard, you won't win without him. USU is also looking to be much better this year than last. I'd definitely put you guys at 3rd and beyond that, I don't think it matters where UVU, SUU, and Utah land. They are all in the bottom half of state and no one cares what any of them do.

Ignorant post..

Weber is VERY MUCH improved from 2 yrs ago in Logan, & a better overall team from last season.
Weber will beat BYU in Ogden, & possibly an Aggie team led first & foremost by the refs in Logan.

Berry has proved more than Haws.
When was the last time a return missionary came off the miss, & just lit things up... Not going to happen. It will take a year just to get his legs back.

I had faith that you guys would take care of BYU last year and was sitting there on the 3rd row cheering you guys on. You got thrashed. I've watched Weber and I don't see a much improved team, maybe you'll prove me wrong. With BYU I see a few key returning players (Haws and Davies) that will contribute quite a bit.

Got to love faithful fans...will be more than happy to jump & cheer a Coach Rahe Wildcat team victory over BYU--when it happens! But in my recollection, it HASN'T under HC Rahe (in Ogden or Provo). :wall: Yes, there's a first time in everything but Rahe has a less than stellar record vs. in-state. Don't think his team has ever won a game in Logan, either. Here's hoping!!!!!!!!

The JC kid will be the starting PG? Either way, between him or Davis learning Stew's system, for that matter, Rahe's system is extremely tough too, I think neither will be that comfortable. Granted, Wheels has a year in his respective program, but isn't 100% comfortable running they system. He was pretty much the backup SG last year. Yes, we have Richardson and Bamforth that can both run the team too. So no matter, I still say the PG spot is in favor of Weber.

Berry, and I know the arguments, is probably the 2nd best player in the state and will make a really good run at being the best by the end of the season. He is going to eat up most of the SF mins and same thing at the PG, USU doesn't have a SF that really knows the system, except Burger and he isnt on the same level athletically as Berry. I still USU the overall advantage because the game will be in Logan. The bench's are pretty close to being a draw; yet Weber might have a slight advantage. I think the factor might be Bolomboy. If USU had Harris it would be virtually evan, but without him, not so much. Don't count on Lopez doing anything special. How's it been George?
