Better Media Coverage

Before joining this board, I would log onto the Sac Bee online to get Hornet football/basketball info. It has always bothered me that the Bee gives minimal coverage to the Hornets. Almost immediately the fist time I went to their site I knew there wasn't going to be decent coverage. What gave it away, you ask? The fact that all of the capital's teams, and others, have a direct link when you hover the cursor over he sports tab, but the Hornets didn't and still don't. You have to click colleges, where you will find them with all the JUCOs, PAC 12 and WAC teams. How is it that the 49ers, Raiders and A's get links, but the hometown U's teams don't!?!? I don't understand how the city's very own university is neglected. I can really sympathize.

My Alma Mater, Cal State L.A., suffers from the same discrimination. But I can understand why that happens to us, to some extent. We're a DII athletics school and USC and UCLA over shadow us. And USC, UCLA and the PAC 10/12/WHATEVER the hell it's at now get all media attention around here. They own L.A. Not even other local U's (Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Northridge and LMU) that play at the DI level get any attention here. They all play in very respectable basketball conferences (Big West and WCC), but like Cal State L.A. are neglected by the L.A. Times. Sacramento is not L.A.

From my understanding, the number of universities in the capital area is a lot smaller than what it is here in L.A. That is why I can't come to terms as to why the Sac Bee doesn't provide better coverage of Hornet athletics. Maybe you guys can fill me in as to why Bee coverage of the hornets is terrible.

I'm not sure if you've said this before, but how in the world did you become a Sac State fan?

As for the media in Sacramento, their actions defy logic. I wouldn't even know where to begin to describe what is wrong with the Bee, local coverage and so forth without giving you a psychological report. The overall culture of the city comes into play, which is that we have an inferiority complex. Many in the city compensate by trying to attach itself to things that are "Big League" and distance themselves from anything they believe is inferior. The media perpetuates this. The high school football teams in this area are really good and garner national attention, so you will get heavy coverage of high school games and teams in the Bee. Sac State will not get sufficient media coverage in the Bee until we win big games consistently or until we move into the FBS level and play "important" programs.

But we have Sacstatesports.com now, so all is good.
