Retail, Cafe, Therapeutic massage
Peak Adventures (outdoor recreation & bike shop)
Cardio/weight space--13,860 sq ft
3 fitness studios
Indoor running track
Multi activities court
4 basketball court complex
Rock climbing wall--39’6” x 56’
Bouldering wall--13’ x 15’
4 racquetball courts

Wow sounds like a lot of useless stuff if you ask me. Why not scrap the Peak Adventurers (they already have a space in the Union), therapeutic massage (there was one of these in the Union when I was a student, why do they need more room?), cafe (there are plenty of these around campus already), indoor running track, 4 basketball court complex (wtf is this?), racquetball courts (we already have some southwest of the Hornets Nest) and half of the 13,860 sq ft weight room space and expand the "multi activities court" (whatever that is) into a full blown 5-8k seating area for a respectable "arena" for basketball and volleyball. Any takers?

That link doesn't work now.

The rec center is for the students!!! They deserve a rec center to work out, especially since they paid for the damn thing.

Gonzo did his bait and switch and the arena is now on the back burner.

True JH, but it is also for the alumni who helped pay for it. Fee's were raised years ago to support this project. So in essence, it's for everyone affiliated with the university and not just the students. When I was attending Sac State this project, like some others, had already been funded both through private and student funding sources. Saying that it's just for those that attend currently is pretty selfish, dont you think?

Public university facilities should never be viewed as "just for the students." Tax payers and residents of the city have every right to go to campus and enjoy everything it has to offer.

SD, stop being such a downer. This facility helps to bring prestige to the university. Besides, the arena thing will happen eventually, I hope.

The students who paid for the building of the Rec Center but have or will graduate before the Rec Center is open have the option of using it. Whether they choose to use it, is up to them.

The alums who graduated before the fee increase have NO CLAIM to the Rec Center.

JH, the funding for the project has been coming from various donors. Anyone could donate ANY amount they wanted to, there is a direct link on the rec and wellness page that lets ANYONE donate money. Being as how $25 million has come from private DONATIONS I would say it belongs to EVERYONE! Unless someone wants to post every name on the dnoations list, no one will ever know who donated money.

Any alum will be able to have access for it as long as they pay the required fees...in my case, since I belong to the Alumni Association, I'll probably have discounted fees.

I voted for the fee increase as a Frosh, now I'm in my second year as a grad student. I think I'll just stay in school as long as it takes to get to use the facility for free as a student!

No claim!?!?!?!? We were the ones that voted to approve this thing, what the hell do you mean no claim!!! That area would be nothing but grass and dirt if it wasn’t for us. And don’t blame the previous students for Gonzo putting the money into the Board Feildhouse prior to the rec center.

At least when I was a student, we were smart enough to pass pro-athletic initiatives.
Also the higher fees for the rec center were not allowed to be collected until Gonzo raised a portion through private donations and construction began. He tried to implement the higher fees prematurely after ground broke on the Board Feildhouse but he was put in his place by the student government because the rec center initiative didn’t include student fees going towards the Board Feildhouse.

JH,
You are wrong about your student only attitude. A university does include the alumni because we continue to support OUR school (e.g., support initiatives/development, provide internships, and continue to go to OUR games). If most of the Sac State graduates were like most of the people that post on this site then OUR school would be even better. Moreover, regardless of what you believe, I still live in the community, support and hire Hornets, and I will be sweating my fat @ss off next to you in the Well. Now, I suggest you reconsider your opinion and we will still love you as much as any other Hornet.
Go HORNETS!
Sincerely,
Hornut
