Big Cat is Back!

Bee Writer Joe Davidson just announced on FB that John Volek is the new interim AD. I guess a change is in the offing....

PAM for everyone!

Or does that have too many transfats?

Macriss to stay as Executive Deputy of Facilities and Operations.

Volek did a good job as AD at Sierra. I think that he has the background and personality to do a good job.
Hard to say if he has the ambition to do it full time since he retired from Sierra several years ago.

Macriss is a nice guy but I never felt he had the background or the vision to build a successful program. He might be better suited for his new position, good luck to him.

This seems like very strange timing, you would think he would at least finish out the year. There might be something else going on.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Macriss many times over the last few years. He’s a good guy that wants to be here and do well…he just doesn’t know how. He just isn’t cut out to be a D1 AD and that was pretty obvious early on. He lacks vision and was never at a place that knew how to do things right so he had no one to learn from. Macriss would be a solid AD at the D2 or JC ranks where fund raising and marketing aren’t priorities, which subsequently are vital to ensure a successful product in this era of D1 athletics.

That said, it’s going to be awkward for the next guy with him still on staff. Maybe Macriss bails…who knows. Macriss got some easy wins some of which were set up by the prior admin, but couldn’t move the bar any further than what he inherited…in fact a lot of programs are worse off now than when he took over.

I like that Nelsen saw that things were falling apart, realized that Macriss had no vision or answers and made a bold move to right the ship.

I like that Nelsen saw that so little was being returned from so much investment that he realized that a move had to be made.

I like that Nelsen isn’t satisfied with the status quo of suckitude and didn’t hide behind a “we have no resources” excuse that so many others use(d).

I like that this is a shot across the bow for the status quo, just happy to be here folks in the department.

I like that this move guarantees Sears is done after the ’17 season.

I like that this gives me an excuse to re-up my contributions to Hornet athletics.

I like that a “national” search is going to be done to find the next AD.

I don’t like that a March deadline was set.

I like how this image of Nelsen comes into my head when I imagine how his convo with Macriss went:

Volek is the New AD... The March idea is just politics...
That is my interpretation as well. Not sure why Nelsen would limit his options though, he made that mistake when he kept Macriss as AD.

Too bad this did not come to life two months ago ... Could have enabled new AD to address football situation immediately ... Heavy Juco for an attempt at just enough wins to survive...polar opposite of program building ...

Too bad it didn't happen two decades ago.

Think of a Volek 20yrs younger unleash all his enthusiasm and charisma on his beloved Sac region. Consider where Hornetland would be if he was in control 20yrs. ago?

Unfortunately, I think big John is north of 70 and has a very limited full time back in Hornetville.

Remember, he recruited and coached the greatest Hornet of all time: Charles Roberts.

Obviously Macriss has failed to generate big $$ support for the Event Center. (Gee, I wonder why, the community just spent a trillion dollars on the Sacramento Kings shrine.) Wonder if Nelson has any new updates on that project, or was this his answer?

Wouldnt be surprised if Wulf takes over as HC, Sears devotes his full time to his 'specialty' DC for his last year and Volek takes over as OC. Think we are stuck with yet another crappy fall 2017 Hornet football result.

Troy Taylor just took over as the OC for Utah. This is a nice stepping stone for a potential head-coaching job as we all see there is a potential for an opening at Sac State at the end of next season. One can only dream of what he can bring to this program.

Stop with Paul Wulff as HC. He is Jody Sears very good friend. He was hired by Sears, not the administration. You can say goodbye to Troy Taylor. He is an OC in the PAC 12. He will be off to bigger jobs if he does well in Utah.

New AD needs to have immediate solutions to the decades long issue of facilities at Sac State. The Event Center needs to break ground like years ago and the football stadium needs like some wild modern upgrades like concrete under the seats and restrooms, permanent concession areas and how bout those way out there concepts like a real press box and even box seats. 21 years in the Big Sky with our best record being 5-3? And our largest Big Sky game crowd being like 12K? And zero Big Sky championships in basketball? Close a couple years ago but programs appear to be going backwards again. Upgrades have been talked about for decades so the problems must be well spelled out. So quick solutions must be in sight. And the Power of 1,000 campaign has been in place for two years and the video for the entire campus to be revamped was done by Gonzo before he left.

Understand that everyone is doing perhaps their best and that Sac State has been a champion or contender in most sports in the Big Sky and the 4 other conferences we compete in

Hopeful with this move by President Nelson and that he has been paying attention and wants athletics to be on par with the increasing excellence that this university represents.

The brand of the university is very tied to the success of football and basketball and just think what the brand could be if these programs became champions and continued to fight for championships yearly like other programs at Sac State do .

Good way to start off the 70th year of the university. Good things can happen when those at the top are paying attention and care and willing to shake things up and believe that upward movement is essential.

I can see a long term goal here. Bigcat gets us a REAL football HC, and they takke their time getting a new AD and get the Event center going.

Good discussion, guys. I think SD hit the nail on the head, as always.

My best guess (probably wide of the mark, though): Big Cat hires McClure, Osterhout, or Pielstick as HC, then helps Nelson find a permanent AD. While the search will be national, I would not be surprised for the AD slot to go to Mattice. New blood would probably be better, though....
