I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Macriss many times over the last few years. He’s a good guy that wants to be here and do well…he just doesn’t know how. He just isn’t cut out to be a D1 AD and that was pretty obvious early on. He lacks vision and was never at a place that knew how to do things right so he had no one to learn from. Macriss would be a solid AD at the D2 or JC ranks where fund raising and marketing aren’t priorities, which subsequently are vital to ensure a successful product in this era of D1 athletics.
That said, it’s going to be awkward for the next guy with him still on staff. Maybe Macriss bails…who knows. Macriss got some easy wins some of which were set up by the prior admin, but couldn’t move the bar any further than what he inherited…in fact a lot of programs are worse off now than when he took over.
I like that Nelsen saw that things were falling apart, realized that Macriss had no vision or answers and made a bold move to right the ship.
I like that Nelsen saw that so little was being returned from so much investment that he realized that a move had to be made.
I like that Nelsen isn’t satisfied with the status quo of suckitude and didn’t hide behind a “we have no resources” excuse that so many others use(d).
I like that this is a shot across the bow for the status quo, just happy to be here folks in the department.
I like that this move guarantees Sears is done after the ’17 season.
I like that this gives me an excuse to re-up my contributions to Hornet athletics.
I like that a “national” search is going to be done to find the next AD.
I don’t like that a March deadline was set.
I like how this image of Nelsen comes into my head when I imagine how his convo with Macriss went:
