Big Sky Commissioner Visiting

Oh crap! That makes another night that I can't attend. I'm running with the Ogden Pub Runners to the Raptors game that night. Let's see, hmmm..., a run, ball game, and beer with friends or a Q and A with a couple of stuffed shirts? It's a tough choice, but I'll go with the former.

You shouldn't wonder about me Sac., I'm old. It's expected.

Now that I'm retired, the days just seem to melt together. I, sometimes, need to look at my phone to know what day it is. :yikes:

I've been retired for 5 years now and I know what you mean about the days running together...mondaytuesdaywednesdaythursdayfridaysaturdaysunday or something like that..

Well let's here from those who were there. I've already had a phone call about what was said, but if I were to repeat it, it would be second hand info. That is almost never a good idea. However, I will say that our poster from ND may be closer to the truth than we had thought. The next few years are going to be interesting in the BSC, and the NCAA as well. Weber is well positioned to take advantage of all of the changes that may be coming. It's a great time to be a WSU fan. The Commish and the AD are both concerned about improving scheduling and RPI rankings.

I was told that there were less than 20 people in attendance. However, I did see a lot of WSU fans at the Raptors game. The Raptors were putting a beating on Helena, Montana. It was a great sports night in O Town! :thumb: :thumb:

I went to two Raptor's games this week and also went last night and heard the commissioner. Doug started speaking at 6 and the Raptors didn't start till 7. Could have gone to both. It was a great event to be at and I'd much rather go hear the Big Sky Commissioner, support my institution, and show that my community isn't composed of a bunch of flakes. I'm proud to be a Wildcat and to support my teams, institution, and the community that has built Weber State University. But no, the HELENA HANDBASKETS of the PIONEER LEAGUE, less than A baseball, was more important? You know the Commissioner has spoken to Weber fans twice in 8 years. The Raptors had 7 straight home games this past week. Apples and oranges if you ask me.

As a Weber State fan, and Ogdenite, I'm going to call out our fans. It made us look idiotic! It was embarrassing that practically nobody was there. Do you think when the commissioner shows up in Missoula that only 15 fans, boosters, supporters show? No...he addresses a packed crowd, a shoal of fans show up to support their AD, school, community, and put their butts where their mouths constantly are (that could be construed multiple ways). Talking a big game, yet they walk the walk. But not here at Weber State. We talk smack and then can't back it up. We hide at Lindquist field instead. We are lucky to have him so close and yet, like Weber State fans, much like a spoiled child, we don't go to hear explanations for why things happen. We sit on this forum and bitch and moan, but when it comes down to asking the tough questions, to those we constantly bemoan, we don't show up.

I was part of the running group that threw out the first pitch. We had to be there at 5:45PM, do our run, run on to the field, throw the pitch, and then have our pizza and beer in the stands. I really couldn't show up for the commish. Sorry.

So Weber, Idaho State, SUU, N Colo, and NAU are heading for the WAC and keep football at the FCS level with Dixie St. Everybody else will move to FBS as well as UCDAVIS and Cal Poly full time members. Add NDSU, SDSU, USD, and NMSU if they don't have a Belt offer.

Weber would dominate the WAC, and have limited travel, so what's the problem?

No. That part you are dead wrong about. The WAC is virtually dead. There is a chance that two conferences would be formed out of the BSC and maybe a couple more schools, and there may be some movement in the football alignment for some of the schools. However, it would not be two completely separate entities, and the schools changing for football would not be exactly as you are predicting.

The power 5 are moving away from the rest of FBS, and what is left is losing money like crazy. It is an unsustainable system as it stands. Right now, there is a lot of uncertainty of what changes will take place, but take place they will. What divisions are formed and how they will be organized is up in the air. The schools in the BSC who are positioned to take advantage of this shift are the ones who have been investing in their facilities #1, who live in the larger communities #2, and have the larger budgets #3. Potential may be part of it, but just a small part. Desire and wishes will have nothing to do with it, without already having the first three things mentioned. :coffee:

You do understand d that it's not like the Big Sky Commish or Weber AD will be absolutely forthright and honest, right?

The UND practice in their new 300 m indoor practice center for the first time, as a thunderstorm rolled over with heavy rain.

First, that's great about your indoor facility. I think it's great. Second, and perhaps far more importantly, what is the point of being FBS? What would UND gain from the move? Would it increase academic excellence? Or put an additional drain on budgets in the attempt to stay relevant? Next, are you aware that the other Dakota Schools don't want anything to do with you. Case in point why are you in the Sky? When South Dakota balked at the invite North Dakota should have been cut loose. You are extremely lucky to be in a league and now you are talking that that league is going to split in such a way where you will be kept? Flagship or not, it takes 8hrs to drive to Missoula from Ogden (might I add a major metropolitan area nestled in the middle of the 3M Wasatch Front) . Whereas it takes 14hr from Greeley and 12 from Bozeman the two closest Big Sky cities and it is virtually impossible to fly into Grand Forks.

So, to point this out to you...first, UND is lucky to be in a DI conference. Two, there really aren't any that many television sets so no reason for media to get excited about an FBS UND. Third, you don't really have the best programs (hockey doesn't drive alignment if it did you'd be an all-sport member in the Big 10; they aren't knocking down your door. Fourth, it is pretty damn hard to travel to UND. Fifth, your budget isn't that impressive when was the last time athletics issued a budget report? That usually means the department is in the red and doesn't want anyone to know. 25 more scholarships and that's just football not the necessary 25 equal scholarships for women and COAs...you get the point. And, finally, you do know you need 15k fan average (you were at 6k) last year.

I conclusion and I really hope you get this. There are absolutely no moves towards the WAC since 2012. Fullerton said three times his goal was to kill the WAC's ability to have football. There was talk of pushing UND out in favor of adding New Mexico State. Pretty sure when the G5 come to the SKy, MVC, CAA that they will be coming to form a new DI level that sponsors a full playoff. Every Big Sky school will move. besides, Weber is in a far better spot than UND. Keep spouting your conspiracy theories because that's all they are. If anything the sooner UND out the better for everyone in the Sky.

I certainly was not naming any schools and I don't think the commissioner did either. I'm just pointing out the things that will be considered in any realignment. I don't think that football will be the only consideration.

FBS gains more than 10 times the publicity of FCS. Look at even Idaho even with losing. FBS brings in much more dollars, so FBS programs don't lose as much as FCS. The Big Sky would get a big increase in TV dollars if they went FBS. They would also èventually get CFB dollars.

UND drove the hockey realignment as well as the Big Ten. The Big Ten won't take us because we not AAU, even though we are Minnesota's number 1 rival. A goal is to play a Big Ten school every year in football too, but they won't schedule FCS schools nows so for that to happen we have to go FBS. We play Wyoming, Utah, and Washington in upcoming years. A new revised stadium will go far in attracting fans, just like when we opened the REA for hockey it's been sellouts for years with more than double the fans and 250,000 fans a year. Your wrong about UND'S athletic budget as it doesn't include a single ticket purchased, which all goes to the REA charitable trust. Revenues listed in our budget are mostly seat licenses. Our budget is nearly $30 million if the REA is included.

UND desires to be FBS for the same reason Idaho and NMSU want to stay FBS. NDSU, SDSU, and USD would never get an offer from the MAC and probably not the MVFC if they go FBS. The Big Sky is their only option to keep up.

UND has increased its expertise in energy, engineering, medicine, law, and aerospace, as all have new buildings to show for their expansions. FBS is a way to showplace your university. North Dakota is no longer a poor rural state, but now a rich one with increasing economic diversity and a growing population. It is only fair that we get a place on the FBS table.

The research intensive schools in the Big Sky want FBS as a way to showcase their schools. Other schools less focused on research in the conference are welcome to stay if they go FBS.

Let me repeat myself. FBS is nearly dead. It is on its last leg, with the power 5 and almost all of the money moving away from FBS. What will be left in the dust cloud? Nobody knows at this point. Just that there are big changes coming.

If UND wants to be FBS, they might as well throw in with the WAC. They are equally as dead. :yikes:

The G5 makes much more than FCS with CFP payouts, bowls, TV, and guarantee payouts. Its cheaper to be a low level FBS team than be in FCS with 63 schollies.

Idaho, Montana, Mt St, Davis, Poly, and Sac St are leading the charge behind the scenes. They did not want to go to the WAC several years ago because California was in a budget crisis then. The Montanas would go not because the WAC would have been filled with Texas and southeast FBS moveup teams like Lamar, Sam Houston and Liberty and Jacksonville St.

Unless there a major economic crisis again, the Big Sky is going FBS.

A WAC with

Weber
Idaho St
Utah Valley
S Utah
Dixie St
NAU
Grand Canyon
Bakersfield
Seattle
N Colo
Colo St-Pueblo

Contains cost pretty low. Fullerton will be thanked on his way out of town.

If you want to look at athletic budgets in the league and across the nation (state institutions only).

Oh, hey, Sioux...guess what oil prices are collapsing. Guess you can look forward to being a poor rural state again.
