Big Sky Conference preseason poll

That's nice that we are not at the bottom of the pile. I think it's realistic that we could/should make the Big Sky tournament this season. Could you imagine the team making a run in the Big Sky tournament and winning it? We would be on millions of brackets throughout the country.
That's the hope. 
Making the dance is always the goal of every program, but with Tad, there's a certain sense of expectation, rather than just hope. It might not happen this year -- but it might, and that's exciting. And once it does, he's building a no-flash-in-the-pan program. And that's exciting, too.

Given that the folks at the Pocatello newspaper released their votes, I'll list mine here:

Troy, how much thought is given to these votes vs. just playing hunches. Since you have to cover seemingly all of the sports, is it hard to do much research on basketball during the middle of football season? Broadcasters always amaze me. Listening to them do multiple sports (Joe Beninati who does the Caps games is also called on to do football for Vs.) and I rmeember listening to Mike Haynes do Colorado Rapids games.
And being as though Troy released his ballot, here's mine:

Since I didn't get to Greeley until February of this past year, my ballot was constructed after hours and hours of relentless research ... OR ... a quick glance over the BSC prospectus.

Sixth seems fair to me, after being picked ninth is just about every other poll in all sports at least it's a step up. We finished 7th last year so at least they see us as on the rise and not on the decline.
I wish we were bigger though, although every team in the country wants that too.

The best thing about preseason polls is they don't mean anything. I am right there with all of you - I think anything from 4th to 6th is realistic. Just getting in the BSC tournament is the important thing. From there anything is possible.

It'd be easier if I wasn't also the news director & AM news anchor, but a lot of it comes down to memory. In the case of a ballot like this, a little refresher of who lost key personnel helps a lot. I have been blessed with a good memory (and cursed with same, but that's another story).
This is also where Scott & Heather's efforts with media guides & notes helps a ton. In a past life... :lol: I was covering juco hoops at the same time high school FB playoffs were going on. In both cases, all of the research and notes was done on my own--and, for a few years, before the dawn of the internet for stuff.
I'm actually spoiled when preparing now compared to earlier in my career, where I had to hope the local library carried a newspaper from an opponent's community.

One other note, I didn't dig into Heather's release, but the women have been picked 4th.

U can bank that WSU wont finish 7th as long as Randy Rahe is still our coach. Also, prior to the 2006 losing season, we had made the big sky tourney 24 straight yrs. The top 6 teams make the tourney.

He knows. Thrust me, of all the people on this board, he probably knows the format of the Big Sky tourney as well as anyone. Also, for the record, here's how I see the men shaping up:

2. Northern Colorado (A little homerism, I admit)
3. Idaho State
4. Montana
5. Weber State
6. Northern Arizona
7. Montana State
8. Eastern Washington
9. Sacramento State
I honestly don't get all of the love for NAU, I think they'll fall off in a pretty big way after losing Landry.

I think the top 4 spots will be very competitive this year.
I could easily see UNC making it, which would be great!

UM, always picked high but haven't hosted in 10 years.
WSU, i dont think we will finish worse than 4th.
PSU, I'm still skeptical with their new team to repeat. A repeat has happened 9 times, 5 of which were weber. I dont get why these great new players left hawaii and washington if they were so good.
ISU, always skeptical about them, they haven't been good for so long, well i mean as far as winning it all. I think the last time they won the conf was 1987 and before that 1977 but i could be off. ISU has 6 guys over 6'8" that are supposed to be good but I find it hard to believe any good big guys would want to go to ISU. I think they will be good though but i wont be shocked if they finish no better than 4th.
If it went the way I would like it, here would be my big sky tourney, in ogden naturally.

I think PSU is the preseason favorite, but you can take ISU, Montana, UNC, Weber and maybe NAU and draw them out of a hat, with EWU, MSU and Sac State in the bottom three. I put the 2-6 teams where I did based mostly on hunches.
