Big Sky Expansion?

Looks like there could be some more expansion in the future.

No word of Southern Utah being added as a full member.

I think this could be good for PSU if they do a Big Sky West and a Big Sky East. These two divisions would leave PSU in the division opposite Montana, MSU, and WSU, making for an easier path to a winning record and playoff birth.

Wait a while, it'll probably happen in the next few days or weeks.

Good strategy by the big sky. The conference realizes they will probably be losing some members in the near future and so being swept up in this time of multi-conference realignment, will have set in place an attractive 12-team conference. The configuration into East-and-West Divisions will help to attract quality teams to fill in gaps in the event of teams departing for the WAC.

My guess is the conference will look like this:

West Division
Portland State-E Washington (Dam Cup)
UC-Davis-Sacramento State (Golden Horseshoe Trophy)
Cal Poly SLO-N Arizona (TBD)

East Division
Weber State-Idaho State (TBD)
Montana State-Montana (Great Divide Trophy)
N Colorado-S Utah (TBD)

I think rivalry games will also be instituted throughout based on travel pairings, complete with rivalry trophies (like the Dam Cup) for each. Some of the more interesting rivalry trophies from the NCAA are The Kit Carson Rifle between Arizona and New Mexico, The Indian War Drum between Kansas and Missouri, The Platypus Trophy between Oregon and Oregon State, and The Seminole War Canoe between Florida and Miami.

Made the correction. Thanks for that.

That's a good name, something with staying power. Maybe we should upgrade the name of our rivalry trophy. Sound as if people might have a bad feeling about playing for the "dam cup." Maybe we should call it the "Columbia Cup" or the "Hydropower Cup" or something of that ilk. Something with some CACHÉ.

My $0.02 here but....

I don't think the Sky will invite SUU. I think they are waiting for Idaho to drop down after the WAC goes belly up (probably next spring - UH will announce they'll go Indy in football).

Also, I think for all sports except football the Sky will add 2 big-market schools to appease the Montana schools from leaving the conference. The two: Denver and Seattle. So, the league will have 12 teams for all sports just different players for the major sports, football and basketball.

I agree, but I really think Idaho would do just about anything to keep from dropping down. I think they may be looking seriously at University of North Dakota. Not as great of fit geographically as SUU, but stronger academics and athletic programs.

I also agree that Seattle and Denver would make great additions.

I don't think Idaho has a choice. Good chance Sun Belt won't take them back. Plus, the Big West is a non-football conference so they're out. And Idaho can't survive as an independent without a good TV deal.

How will scheduling work? With two added teams, a full conference schedule would be 10 games with one non-conference for the max 11 game regular season schedule. The conference schedule should be limited to the existing 8 so schools can still schedule FBS schools. We need the money.

My guess....

it'll be like the current Big Ten schedule. Play 8 conference games and you miss 2 opponents every year.

The poisitive from this....it'll save on travel.

The negative......you won't play everybody to where two or more teams could end up sharing the title and not play each other!

Major rumor alert...

http://www.dakotastudent.com/news/ncaa-approves-nickname-plans-1.1605149

North Dakota's football team could be joining the Big Sky soon while the rest of the athletic programs will be in the Summitt League.

BTW, they're retiring the Fighting Sioux nickname as well.

Bigskyconf.com is saying Southern Utah, North Dakota to join the Big Sky, with South Dakota expected to join soon.

"Monday’s additions bring the future Big Sky to 11 core members and 13 football playing members. The Big Sky Conference is also on the verge of announcing the addition of the University of South Dakota as a 12th core member. The Big Sky will become a 14-team football league and split into two seven-team divisions. The Big Sky does not anticipate losing any of its current nine core members."

The Sac State / UC Davis rivalry game is called the "Causeway Classic" A much bigger rivalry than Cal Poly/.UC Davis as the two schools ar only 15 miles apart with the Yolo County Causeway between them.

Major news: South Dakota is NOT joining the Big Sky. They accepted an invite to have their football team join the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

Now what is the Big Sky going to do. They want at the very least have 12 teams for football. Only having 11 schools, should the Montana schools leave, is not enough to have divisions.
