Big Sky First Team - Pick 'Em

Here's my team so far (subject to change):

Cameron Jones
Brian Qvale
Bobby Howard
Devon Beitzel
Will Cherry
Kyle Bullinger

I had MSU's Rush as a first teamer...but just couldn't put 2 Bobcats on the first team. Will Cherry gets his spot.

I give Bamforth, Hughey and Morris a great chance to make 2nd team/honorable mention.

Any of these 3 could sneak into the first team with a strong finish as well.

What is everyone else's take?

If the first team was the best player for each position Kyle would be a unanimous selection. He is the best small forward. Being in a league of guards works against his chances. MSU can't have 2 since they have now lost 7 in a row. Hughey and Bamforth can both make it as first team if we are hosting.

MVP is out of Qvale, Jones and Beitzel.

MVP will be either Qvale or Beitzel.

a little off topic, but does anybody know if Lillard travels with the team on away games?

Honestly, each team has a potential first teamer.
Eastern: Glen Dean
Idaho State: Broderick Ghilcrest
Montana State: Bobby Howard or Erick Rusch
Montana: Brian Qvale or Will Cherry
Northern Colorado: Devon Beitzel
Northern Arizona: Cameron Jones
Portland State: Charles Odum
Sacramento State: Sultan Toles-Bey
Weber State: Scotty Bamforth, Lindsey Hughey, or Kyle Bullinger

The Sky will chose those players who have been the most consistent. Without a doubt...K Bull is the best player at his position, but like graygoose stated, the Sky is a guard heavy conference. I wouldn't doubt if 4 out of the 6 will be guards. It'll be really hard getting a 1st teamer this season.

We already know that the following players will be first teamers:
Devon Beitzel
Cameron Jones
Brian Qvale

the other three (one is the league MVP) is anyone's guess. I'm thinking Weber will have to get one since the Cats are at the top of the league standings, but who that will end up being is a mystery. I really think that it'll be out of Bamforth, Hughey, and Bullinger.

I'm thinking there will be two Wildcats on the second team. Morris should be a lock for the second team. He has become the second best Center in the league, behind Qvale (his isn't that far behind; however, Busma isn't far behind either). Also, I think the Cats will get two honorable mention candidates.

Is there a chance for a CAT to get defensive player of the year? Mahoney perhaps or Hughey?

Lillard travels to some games. I think that it was mentioned at the Coaches Luncheon recently that he'll be going along to San Jose State.

I'd love to see it go to Mahoney, but I don't think it will. If Qvale wasn't going to win MVP, he'd get DPOY. That being said, Will Cherry's scoring has somewhat outshined his lockdown defense all year (leads Big Sky in steals), so it probably will go to him.

I don't think there is any way in hell MSU gets 2 All Conference 1st team spots
I'll predict they get 0, and don't make the tournament Howard doesn't deserve it, either does Rush, anybody who saw the game Sunday knows how awful they are.....

They have lost 8, (7 in conference) in a row, and lost to maybe the worst team in Division 1 at home.....

Depending on how Fulton ends the season, and after watching him at EWU it's hard not to imagine Fulton for Freshman of the Year.....

If Fulton doesnt get Freshman of the year, I'll eat my shoe.

Qvale is a lock for defensive player of the year. He is the big sky's all time leading shot blocker. He will be unanimous. 8.8 RPG and over 3 bpg.

Fulton will for sure win fresh award.

Weber will have a first teamer and I can't see msu having any chance at 2 first teamers.

No team below the top 5 will get a player on the first team. To be first team you need to be more than just good. You need to make your team good, as well. Montana State gets nobody on the first team if they finish 6th or 7th. If there is a clear first place team, they could get two, but only if they have two that warrent it. A second or third place team will not get two on it, but will probably get one on. In general, the better your team does, the more individual accolades you will get. Even when they try to single out individuals, it is still a team game, as it should be.

The coaches will discuss who they want to submit to the rest of the leagues coaches for selection. There is a lot of politicing that goes on between coaches. If you want someone to get on it you need to push the right guys and trade votes with other coaches in the league. Some coaches will submit more than one player for an accolade, but usually that will insure that niether will get it.

Lets hope so, I really dont want to eat my shoe.

I definitely respect your opinion, you know your stuff; however, I really don't see MSU getting two, if they even get one, on the first team. Do they deserve it?? Well, yeah, probably, but losing 8 straight wont get you any accolades.

like I said yesterday, I could see either Bull, Bam, or Hughey getting on the first team, but then again, I wouldn't doubt it if Weber doesn't get anyone on the first team.

There are still four conference games left. A lot can still happen.

As for defensive player of the year...yeah, Cherry will in all likelihood be the DPOY, if Qvale gets MVP, if not, he will be the DPOY. Right now, I'm leaning to Beitzel being the MVP. Without him UNC isn't anywhere close to being a Big Sky contender.
